  • How I Plant and Maintain Daffodil Bulbs (Narcissus)💐 - In this video I finally am getting around to planting some of my flower bulbs. I started with the daffodils. Daffodils are probably the lowest maintenance and least troublesome of the spring flower bulbs. They are generally very reliable flowering every spring with adequate drainage and sunlight.

    I didn't really set out to make a 17 minute video, but here it is. There is a bulb playlist on my channel with bulb videos that I shot last fall as well. It might be helpful. Thanks for watching

      Hi Jim: Thanks so much for all you do. When is the latest I can plant daffodils? I live in zone 6b on Long Island. The ground is still workable. Thanks. Merry Christmas.

      Really helpful to me as a newbie! My bulbs are older from a discount store & occasionally, sadly stored in plastic store bag:(. I love your informative and detailed advice, but is it possible to reuse soil in above ground garden after these are done blooming or should I keep it separate between flowers & veggies? Otherwise would like to plant!

    Back in the late 80's when I was a much younger man I scraped some pennies together and bought about 100 Tulip bulbs to plant at my first ever home. I may as well put a sign up for the squirrels to say "salad bar" as they had a field day digging them up over the winter LOL. I now plant exclusively daffodils as the squirrels and the deer will leave them alone. Another great informative video thank you Mr. Putnam.

      So did I. Over 50 and 5 different tulips bulbs, three year's later this past spring only three Miniature tulips popped up. This year I'm making a chicken wire cage. Oh the squirrels got my crocuses too!

    there is a little trick with daffodils , leave them after flowering as said above .
    but when in the ground , as soon as they start to yellow badly - either put the lawn mover over them , ( if in the lawn - as i got them . ) or pull them from beds , the same time as tulips and hyacinths and lay all the bulbs with leaves attached under a lot of old wet MULCH leaves untill bulb leaf are no more . then store untill planting time in your particular area .
    Ps --- all bulbs can be left in ground normally but it does seem better to lift some varieties .
    PPs --- i m from WALES and daffodils are our national flower.

    Jim, when you say dafs limit flowering on other flowers, what limitations does that cause? Should I not plant certain flowers nearby? Is that only when they are flowering or all the time??

    I just did this with a rented Bosch drill corded and it also had a stabilizer which really helps. I have clay soil and I mean it helped dig the hole but didn’t get very far because I think it hit the clay and then everything was so dry it just kept filling back in I couldn’t just drop it in there I had to dig it out anyway so I’m like what’s the point. Next year I think I’m gonna try just digging a trench.

    very rocky area where I wanted bulbs last fall. Broke an auger. I mean, tore it apart. Pine mulch looks very nice where I can't plant anything! LOL My new yard guys charge double to put anything in ground. Oh, if only it were just clay...throw some good old rock in there. Changes everything. Nobody wants to work in my yard as far as planting. sigh.....

    How much power does your drill have? I tried to use a bulb auger today and it wouldn't penetrate the clay soil. Is the problem my soil, the auger, or the drill?

    • @solarroofing8072

      soil. if it's that hard, you need to till in some organic matter

      @melissamybubbles6139 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@solarroofing8072 Definitely. I don't have a tiller. I do have a dandelion fork. With sometimes great effort, it penetrated the soil. I stuffed leaves and pot soil in the holes.

      I am still traumatised from my first planting of any veg'. I planted two rows of purple sprouting broccoli and came out one day to find, literally in a matter of two hours, that the bloody pigeons had scoffed the lot, leaving only these ethereal broccoli plant skeletons. A serious question: how do people manage to grow in scale PSB, tulips, or whatever the birds and squirrels like to eat? I cannot se how anything can survive short of netting the lot? Thanks.
