For the untrained metal ear it is understandable as this type of vocals is not easy to catch. I had the same problem when starting to listen to Mayhem and Darkthrone back in the early 90's. It didn't take many songs to understand though🙂
Most are taken aback with the theatrics the first time and the huge sound they produce or even somewhat tune them out after hearing foreign language at the beginning.
This show they had 92 performers on stage and like 140 for the whole production. Dimmu Borgir is extremely popular in Europe and they are most definitely a symphonic black metal band.. they used to have a God like bassist who would sing the greatest bridges ever.. they haven't been the same since.
mindtraveller100 My point exactly. I hate pretty much all regular black metal but the symphonic elements that Dimmu Borgir have make me love it. Everyone has their own taste, and that's the way it should be!
Welcome to the world of Symphonic Black Metal. The band, Dimmu Borgir, which means Dark Fortress in Icelandic, if memory serves, is a Symphonic Black Metal band. They don't ordinarily play with a full orchestra, they use keyboards instead, and they also used to have a bassist that sang the upper octave parts, but now they have to use female singers. But as you can see here with the full orchestra, it blends well with the heavy metal parts. Metallica tried something like this back in '99 with the album S & M (Symphony & Metal), and it just didn't work as well with the Thrash Metal rhythms, but it works quite well with Black Metal for some reason. That said, I only listen to a handful of death/black metal bands, and Dimmu Borgir is one of them, because there's enough melody in their songs that keep me interested. Other bands like this are Children of Bodom, Norther, Amon Amarth, and Death.
I also recommend their song "The Serpentine Offering", as it offers the amazing clean vocals of ex-member ICS VORTEX! Their album "Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia" from 2001 is my favourite Metal album of all. It's so sharp, majestic, and is super atmospheric.

Woah, I'm kinda early for the first time. I will always remember how Dimmu Borgir turned into my first extreme metal band ever back in the end of 2018. At first, I just listened to it and it was pretty ok (esp. the growls - I had gotten used to listening to them, but I was just appreciating them, not actually loving them) but I gradually got used to it more and more. You say you loved the female part? Well, a sad thing I'm gonna tell you is that she was in there just for this song, a one-time thing. Buuuut, in a lot of songs, they used to have ICS Vortex who supplied some of the best tenor vocals I have ever heard. Magnificent. I recommend hearing out The Serpentine Offering (even if not for a reaction video, just for yourself)
@@GiddyKitty Npnp, you're welcome ❤️ Well, it's not like she can permanently join them, sadly... it was a one-time collaboration because she has her own band called Djerv (and their stye pretty unique ngl - a mix of hard rock/heavy metal and black metal imagery (not much growl vocals from the couple songs I heard by them)). But yeah, I loved this variety Vortex gave for a lot of albums and her contribution here... if it wasn't for them, I probably wouldn't have gotten through the barrier and get into extreme metal.

By the way Giddy Kitty, I know you have a lot of band and song suggestions to work through, but if you ever get a chance, check out the band Epica. That band has some great beauty and the beast style duets and I think you might like them. A couple of my favorite Epica songs are "The Essence Of Silence" and "Wheel of Destiny". Also "Crimson Bow and Arrow" is fun if you are an Anime fan.
