    For mine Shagrath is the perfect example of not needing to blow a gasket to produce harsh vocals. Guy looks like he’s having a casual conversation whilst he’s sounding like Palpatine from Star Wars.

    I've worked backstage at over a dozen orchestra backed metal concerts so far.
    I can confirm that from talking to the orchestra members are almost universally having a hell of a time doing these kinds of concerts.
    For some because they get to play in front of gigantic crowds, for others because Metal is probably THE music genre that lends itself to being orchestrated best.

    Shagrath is one of the original growlers. Love his growling style so much! It's quite clear and you can easily hear the lyrics, but there's still something very primal about it. Been a fan for decades, but it's always fun to see how other people react to Dimmu Borgir.

    I get mildly annoyed when people request extreme metal bands for vocal coach reactions, because unless they're Melissa Cross, they mostly don't understand the mechanisms/complexities for the different harsh vocal styles so can't really give a critique/breakdown of what's going on vocally, good or bad...which is the whole point of the vocal coach reaction series
    Luckily this had a mix of DB's usual harsh vocals and a guest's amazing vocals so there was something for you to comment on at least
    As a metalhead, there's plenty of metal bands I'd love to suggest for you to hear just because I want to spread the metal love, but not necessarily ones I want a reaction/breakdown from a vocal coach for

    • @SSTVocalCoach
      @SSTVocalCoach  4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      I totally get where you're coming from, but from my viewpoint, i'm LOVING getting these suggestions. It's literally forced me to widen my horizons, and take a deeper look at vocal styles I wouldn't usually come into contact with. It's been a steep learning curve, but very worth it.
      Love Melissa Cross too, she was much the same, brought in on a recording session, and made it her new focus. A wonder Woman!

    Also, the change of your face expression was priceless 😂
    Now, on to the details, Captain Sam :P
    Growl is one thing. Another thing is Agnete Kjølsrud (the guest lady) who is actually an alt-/punk rock singer and she was utilised in lots of different stuff (compare Get Jinxed for instance or her material from Djerv).
    One last thing - I can GUARANTEE you that not all of the choir singers/musicians were thrilled. At least that’s my impression. Back in the days, when such marriage (metal + orchestra) wasn’t that popular, Therion decided to record Vovin without showing the session musicians what they contributed towards. Apparently the reactions - once they listened to everything - were, delicately saying, mixed haha
    Anyway, thanks! Getting a message saying you decided to record an impression was a nice birthday gift ;) And glad you enjoyed it!

    never seen a smokeless bong before
    if you havent heard their stuff before you should listen to their earlier stuff when they had a male operatic vocalist. his voice is amazing too. the serpentine offering and the sacrilegious scorn are two where he sings a bit.

    No effect on her voice, it's called having a full-blown choir singing behind her.

    • @NolanVoid
      @NolanVoid 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @xjoshxbox I meant that there wasn't any effect that was altering her voice to a great degree. Delay and reverb are typically the more subtle effects used on vocalists. What I felt the reactor was referring to was the added effect of having her singing with a large choir behind her.

    Awesome!!! Dimmu Borgir is the Death Metal equivalent of Nightwish, tons of theatrical elements and orchestral elements.

    This drummer is incredible? He's good, but they've had godlike drummers prior to him. Their 2001 album with Nick Barker has the most complex and lightning fast drums of their entire discography. Not many drummers can correctly play their song "Indoctrination" for example (not even the drummer from this video, because I saw him attempt it with my own eyes in Toronto (Canada) and he played it differently). There's so much cymbal work and lots of crazy fills. People have described his drumming as "surgical" due to the precision.

      I'm sorry, don't take this as an insult, but... Reading this comment as a Swede made me laugh out loud! Glader is our translation of Happy the dwarf from Snow White, while Galder means Wizard or Spell in ancient nordic. The evil black metal stage name is obviously Galder, not Glader.
