    Congratulations Pete and it makes me soooo happy that there is a person out there whose grail knife doesn’t have to be a timascus, jewel-encrusted, Grimsmo Dorkman on rare earth magnet bearings. Not naming names. But have yourself an absolutely wonderful rest of your day!

    • @MightyRude
      @MightyRude 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Rare earth magnet bearings?
      That sounds like a horrible idea as magnets have a limited life time (I believe for neodymium magnets it’s around 100 years when not under magnetic load and around 20 years when it is).
      Magnet bearings will have to be very close together so they will constantly be under load from when the knife was assembled, so you will have to replace the bearings within the 20 years.

    In the winter of 1988, I bought an Al Mar Eagle Talon with brown micarta scales. The steel was AM-6. I was to discover many years later, it was Al's designation for AUS-6. The knife came with a really nice thick nylon pouch with a full flap, made from a woven material that I've never seen anywhere else. There was velcro sewn onto the flap to keep it secured. Straps on the back of the pouch made it capable of vertical, or scout carry. A thick red nylon strap was sewn inside the pouch, that extended up beyond the mouth of the pouch as a pull tab to help extract the folder from inside. ... I carried the knife scout style on a 1" nylon homemade belt with a sidelock delrin buckle for more than a decade. ... I very nearly lost it on a remote forest fire in interior Alaska about a year after I bought it. Laboring on the fireline with a chainsaw, I happened to glance down and the scout carry sheath was open with the knife about to fall out. The velcro was worn out. ... I switched it to vertical carry on the belt immediately. When I got back to civilization in Fairbanks, I replaced the velcro with a 3/4" sidelock delrin buckle. Problem solved. ... I used the Eagle Talon then mostly for food prep in remote, primitive, Alaskan fire camps that were only helicopter accessible. Secondarily, it cut a lot of fiber tape used to secure anything that might become airborne in the rotor wash of the helicopters and be sucked into the turbine engines. FOD - Foreign Object Debris ... I still have that trusted old friend, but it's semi-retired now. A Spyderco Miliitary (1 of 5) I own is now my EDC of choice. I have an original in ATS-34, two in 440V, an S-30V and an S-110V version. Those 5 Millies represent at least 3 different generations of the model. ... A couple years ago, I found the last, non-Chinese Al Mar Eagle Talon for sale at Knife Works in Louisianna. It's an AUS-8 Japanese gem with gorgeous honey jigged bone scales and a poor quality tan leather pocket slip. ... I guess the Al Mar Eagle Talon is my grail knife too. There's a comforting mystique about them that's difficult to describe.

    Always wanted a zdp189 Al-mar. It's a shame that they're discontinued now. He was such a legendary designer and his influence on the knife world is huge. He helped Sal Glesser design some of the first Spyderco knives and get into the knife making industry from just making sharpening accessories. Al-mar is the one who gave us the mid lockback as well. The man was a legend and a pioneer in the knife industry.

    I got my first grail knife this year. My father gave me a small sebenza 21 with inlays for Christmas. I've always loved sebenzas, and when I got into knives when I was young, they were his grail. So thats super cool. I just got a new job and am getting a small bonus ND I think I'm going to use it to order a large sebenza for me and a small for my son (who is only 1) to give to him when he's older.
    And an al Mar eagle! How cool, the nutnfancy fanny pack knife!

    Cheers for the grail, Pete! It's beautiful. I have a little cheapo Al Mar KAI thing with basically the same profile at half scale and it's nothing special but I really like carrying it to the office and it takes a lovely polish on the edge. And yes the little one is also a bit beefy to be a slicer. But it was also a grail year for me as I finally got my hands on a wood inlayed CRK Small Sebenza...much easier to find I suppose but I was and am still thrilled.

    Nice! I always wanted one of those as well. Thanks for the info on the bum/fanny difference in meaning. Someone told me shag means something totally different there. Here, when someone is hitting baseball's to you in the outfield in practice it's called shagging fly balls. So if I ever make it to Aus, I won't say fanny or shag/shagging, lol.

    Pete ! You knocked me out when you said the grail knife was an Al Mar Eagle ! I have one I bought in 1989, my first "expensive" brand knife. It doesn't have the thumb studs or pocket clip & idk what the steel is. I put an aftermarket thumb stud on it I got from a U.S. Cavalry catalog. Never worked that well. It has had some light use but still has the factory edge. If you had any interest in it I might be persuaded to trade it to you.
    Anyway the video gave me some joy. Love ❤ Ada, glad she's getting some medication for the arthritis.

    When I saw your new old knife; it looked like a similar knife but, not quite as long as yours. A.G. Russell FeatherLite K-93; they sell more of these knives than any other knife design they make. They are still selling them. First ones were made in Seki-Japan; the hardware and handles are made in Arkansas; then they ship them to Japan for final assembly using Japanese blades. Some are just stamped Japan: current ones are made in Taiwan. I used them for years; meaning since 1993. A.G. Russell has never raised the price of the original model and sells it for $35 dollars. He donated 11,000 of them to the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan in 2004. I still have my first one and four more. I have given some to others too. They have AUS8 blades but have other different steels too. They are very sharp from the box. They will cut hair from your arm without touching your skin. To me that is pretty sharp I say. 🎁🎄🙂
