Is this the Best Dragon Ball Z DVD Box Set Release? + The Best Way to Watch DBZ

- Funimation and Toei Animation have released so many home video versions of Dragon Ball Z from VHS tapes, DVD (including the dreaded orange bricks) and on Blu Ray with often mixed results. I recently picked up the complete collection on DVD that were released in Australia in the early 2000s and I give my opinion on why I think it's one of the best releases - is it better than the Dragon Box? Well why not watch and find out!
I also discuss how I like to watch the entire series which is a mix of the Ocean Dub, the original Funimation dub and DBZ Kai. I also defend the original Funimation Dub and talk about why I prefer it over Kai.

I disagree with the Gohan take. I think the new voice fits him a lot better because that’s who he is, not to mention that’s how he sounds like in the Japanese and Mexican dub too. Great video tho I’m a younger fan so seeing dvds only having 3 episodes is crazy.
Great analysis. I agree with your opinion on DBZKAI even though that's how i was introduced to DBZ. The dialogue in the BUU saga of DBZ is better in a few pivotal scenes compared to DBZKAI. Great looking collection btw.

I’m from Australia as well and recently started collecting these box sets. Was finding them one set at a time and by the time I was almost finished found someone selling all the box sets for next to nothing. Now I have a bunch of doubles I’m trying to sell haha. Glad to see there are others who appreciate the original madman release

sweet! I have the funimation dub uncut dvds from androids to world tournament. i love em so much! Maybe someday i can complete it. Although, after watching this I kinda want to mix and match. it is MY collection after all. I'm the one that's gonna watch them
Yeah that's how I feel too! People get so hung up on which version is the best but all of the main releases have their own pros and cons and everyone has their own individual tastes :)

These are cool! I never knew Australia got these releases with artwork different than the U.S. versions. I have the American VHS equivalent of this collection!

I'm also from Australia and I will say, that's my preferred method to watch DBZ, the Ocean (Saiyan and Namek) and original Funimation (Frieza to Buu) dubs. Just how I remember it when it was shown on Cheez TV. I've got the complete collection of a mix between VHS and DVD singles, and the Ocean eps being the Rock the Dragon set and a few singles. Truth be told, I could never stand those "remastered" orange bricks, but Kai's got some decent dubbing.
It's a shame that the orange bricks were ever released, they are awful but sold so well! But yeah, that's such a good way to watch the series. I would love to collect the VHS tapes but they are getting pretty pricey now 😬
Absolutely awesome looking collection~ Very interesting first time seeing this version of collection here! I live in the USA. I technically have the entire series, I have the edited Dragon Ball Goku Saga dvd set, Uncut Funimation DB blue bricks, Rock the Dragon Ocean Dub set, several uncut original aspect ratio saiyan saga dvds, DBZ Amazon Full series blu ray set, and DBGT green brick box. I just wish I had the freiza, cell, and buu saga OG single dvds. I do prefer the series in the original dvd tv format edited/uncut. blu rays are meh to me. Hopefully I can afford to get all the OG dvd singles someday.

Another neat side-note, on the etsy website, I’ve found a seller who made custom dbz vhs tapes with actual t.v. rips of DBZ episodes+commercials from Toonami.
I ordered two tapes. Ultimate nostalgia right there.

Very informative and I always loved the Ocean Dub. Brian Drummond Vegeta was the most menacing villain for me when I watched this as a kid. I know you said you liked watching Kai for the Frieza Saga. Around what episode do you start liking Kai dub better? The whole Frieza fight I'm guessing when Goku arrives?
Would love to meet Brian at a con one day, he's so great! I actually switch over once the Ocean Dub finishes which around when Goku first arrives I think. Kai works well for that section, just flows so much better!

@@unboxingthepast how much u pay? Curious... eu are selling the slipcover dbz season sets bluray they are 4:3 with grain are these good? Its pretty much the 30th anniversary boxset print but sold seperate as each seasons
@@saiyanlives9872 I'd recommend checking out Geekdom 101's video on them for an in depth answer, but in short it's better than Orange Bricks and better than blu-ray, but still not as good as Dragon Box
What are the other boxes you have in the video that aren’t the collection boxes? There’s one with imperfect cell, perfect cell, and goku charging the spirit bomb?
They are all the one collection but have different artwork on each side of the box so that's probably why they look different throughout the video :)

I recently bought the amazon exclusive dbz box set - trying to confirm if the first 67 episodes are ocean dub with the original music? I know it contains faulconer score but not sure if the original few seasons have been redubbed in this boxset or not. I have a bunch of these original disks somewhere in my garage might have to get them out if it doesnt have it
I believe that it does start with the Ocean Dub but have read conflicting reviews about the music, it's hard to get a straight answer as I was also looking at that set. The only real downside is the aspect ratio and cropping but other than that it looks like a good set!

@@unboxingthepast So I got em and had a look, the first eps (pre 68) have the funimation redub with Sean and Chris and a replaced (worse) music score. Its unfortunate but then post 68 it swaps into faulconer and is just like I remember. I wish it came with multiple english options but alas it only has the 1 with 2 different japanese options
Oh wow that's interesting, it's so hard to find the original ocean Dub now apart from the original old DVDs and the rock the dragon set which is quite expensive now! At least it still has the Faulkner score on it.
I have the same sets and have no idea what there worth what is a price range if I was to sell have no idea where to start

Each box set costs around $50-$130. The earlier ones usually cost the most. So yeah, a few hundred dollars 💸
