I just wanna say to you that you’ve helped me with my curly hair problems for a long time now. I’m in 8th grade and I used to have a lot of damage and fizz for a lot of years cause I didn’t know how to deal with my curls. Now I’m 13 and my hair looks amazing because of you. Thank you so much. I hope you see this.
The struggle is SO real. Like Seriously. I have uberfine hair and compare myself to all of these TH-camrs and cry myself to sleep everynight. Jokes aside I want thick hair so badly. I guess I'm just reaching out here so I know that I am not alone haaah
Rutuja Dicholkar yeah but I added a little conditoner after shampooing again. Results: super smooth hair and glossy hair (maybe it still would've been the same w/o the extra conditioner) Used: treseme conditioner and shea butter shampoo.
I have that too. Or ... I have fine very thin hair. Hahaha. Don't understand how I can have curls too, but I do. The hairdressers usually destroy my hair, so I cut it myself. Haha.
So I tried the conditioner first and shampoo last and at first I really didn’t think it would work but after trying it I seriously love this idea! It makes my curls so defined! Thank you
Hi CurlyPenny! I have one question to ask you: you said not to put conditioner on your scalp but how else are we gonna condition our hair? A person who's experienced in chemistry and biology told me that since the part on the scalp is the only alive part of the hair (thats why getting a haircut doesn't hurt but pulling your hair does) we should put the conditioner here to...well, condition it. If we're putting it from the ear down we DO give it a protective barrier, shine, a little bit of moisture but we don't really condition it. But it will build up on our hair if we do put it here, right? I'm confused about what to do :( What do you think about that?
Space Cat sebum from your natural hair follicle already moisturizes it. That’s why we don’t put conditioner on the scalp. It will just weigh down the hair a lot!
I must have been destined to watch your video today because the hacks you shared are amazing! Having straight, fine, thin hair has been a curse my whole life. Just today I was wondering about a satin pillow case because I sleep hella crazy too. My daughter recommended the t-shirt instead of a towel hack just a few weeks ago. Makes so much sense. Everything you recommend makes so much sense and you have the BEST delivery style. Thank you for sharing. I will try every step.
The first one is huge! Eliminating silicones was a major breakthrough for my hair care. After going silicone free, my hair went from semi-wavy to semi-curly! I will have to try shampooing after conditioner. I'm fine + low porosity so I've got to be careful with heavy and oily products. It can be tough just to get all the conditioner out of my hair.
Hey Penny! I’ve been watching you since January of 2015. I grew up without anyone to help with my hair so I straightened it for almost 4 years and dyed it so much. After watching you, I finally fixed my hair and next thing you know, I was a curly girl and I have been since January! For the past year I’ve been battling depression and my hair has stayed up in a constant bun I mean I maybe fixed it curly once every few months. I just started watching your videos again and once again you gave me the motivation to get up in the mornings and do my hair and everyone is shocked and they praise my curls. Thank you for literally saving my hair and helping me grow confident ❤️
Her hair is definitely healthy and gorgeous, but it's naturally more on the thinner side. When I put my hair into two braids, like hers is in this video, my braids are literally about twice as thick as hers because I have very thick hair, haha.
Ruby Inferno Alright, but I'm the kinda person who REALLY has thin hair... If I put my hair in those braids... Girl! They are at least twice as thin as hers! I honestly think her hair has a medium thickness, because like that is a thing too haha. I feel like people kind of forget that. And if her hair is considered thin, then I don't even wanna know what my hair is lol.
Naima K i found that mixing apple cider vinegar + water helps remove the build up. Your type of hair will settle the ratio. Ie: My hair is oily so i use less of acv with more water (this was a trial-error base) 😊
Naima K, I am a 2b/2c wavy girl and I use about 1/2 a teaspoon of baking soda, 1 teaspoon of sulfate free shampoo, and get it sudsy and just shampoo my scalp, it works for me.
You're the reason why I am able to wear curly hair everyday.. Thanks for all these wonderful videos.. You made me meet the best part of my personality.. My curls.. Thanks Penny!!
I may have said this before, but thanks to your videos I stopped putting heat on my hair and started embracing my curls! I've learned so much about curly hair and it is because of you! Thank youuuuuuu
CurlyPenny I use all Devacurl products but I need the moisture from the conditioner to tame the frizz. Also girl I’ve been with you for like 2.5 years of course I’m not using sulfates 😹😹.
I have fine hair (baby fine hair) but a lot of it. Hairdressers were always surprised when they used to color my hair, that they needed to make more of the color, as they only got 75% through it. I do use silicones + sulfates, BTW. To me they're not the enemy, and I fare well with them. I do double condition after washing, though. I also LOC/LCO after washing.
Thank you so much! Your channel has really helped me. I've been wanting someone to help guide me in how to take care of my crazy hair. I'm so happy I found you! Thank you! 😊💕💕
I like a low ponytail just at the nape of my neck. Also you can just leave it which I do sometimes and just use a satin pillowcase!!! Since my hair is too short to pineapple I swear by these.
Not sure if others notice.. but I adore that you use sign language...such as the 'number sign' as well as the correct number signs....im going to school as an interpreter and my brother is deaf.....so it's near and dear to my heart!!! Also I'm a curly girl too!! Keep it upp!!!!
That tip about trying the shampoo last... AMAZING! no joke..usually my root area is pretty frizzy after being out of the shower but I did that trick this morning and no frizz at all by my roots
Could you please make a list of brands that work for fine or thin hair that is also curly? I always have a hard time with moisturizing my curly hair without weighing it down or making it greasy. If you have done this already I am sorry I am new to your channel.
i've been using contiditoner on my scalp for years bc of a tip you used to give for hair growth! will try to not use conditioner nor shampoo on my roots no more and see what happens
When yo hair is less than a quarter of what the youtuber who is saying their hair is thin and fine 8( OMG I want my hair to get thicker and grow! I had such thick hair growing up and now its like a rat's tail and it makes me sad
I know this video is like a year old, but I found it recently and I had to come back to say that shampooing last legit changed my life. THANK YOUUUUUUUUUUUUU
Thanks for the video. I would love to see an updated curly hair routine, especially since you mentioned that you don't apply products near your scalp. I usually do that, but I didn't know that it was a bad thing. I would like to see how you apply products.
I know this comment was sent over 10 months ago but try Jamaican black castor oil massages before showering about once a week. I’ve heard its great for growing thick and long hair! I’m going to be trying it soon
Is someone here having issues with shedding when doing CO? I switched to CO-washing once and got so much shedding. When I switched back to shampoo, that got resolved. I know someone else here on the forum (longhairforum) that has experienced thinning hair while on CO-washing. Hence why I stopped, and also because my SD (seborrheic dermatitis) flared up. I wanted to CO, I wanted to go sulfate-free, but it's just not in the stars for me. I get massive SD flare-ups too!
Yes, I tried co-washing years ago and experienced excessive shedding too. My scalp and skin are quite sensitive and I do better with shampoos, so long as they're sulphate free. I suspect the waxes in conditioners (even silicone-free) clog the scalp and cause problems for some people.
Also, I thought I had SD in the days I used sulphates, but in my case it was a form of contact dermatitis. My skin flared up with red scaly patches from sulphates in shampoos, face wash, toothpaste etc. Since cutting them out, no more problems.
I tried co washing all last year and the conditioner ended up giving me itchy scalp and build up, i also learned that i cant put oils on my scalp at all or anything it builds up and gives me irritation, so i went back to shampoo n cond, and my scalp is fresh. Just try to find a gentle cleanser try baby shampoo it worked for me
I can't use sulfates in my toothpaste either. I get really sensitive teeth if I dare wash with a toothpaste that has them in it. I really need to watch out for that, but on my scalp they are a lifesaver. It's different for each of us, isn't it. I hardly think you can generalize, although it would probably be better "on the whole" without them. I'm still glad they're on the market, though! Let's just say it this way, I'm glad we have a choice!
Hello, Penny, do you think I can use homemade cream as a conditioner? I think the ingredients are same... Water, beeswax, olive oil plus whatever extras I wanna add that day, like vitamin e etc. Thank you.
NellyPlaysMSP Use your sulfate shampoo one last time to get all the silicones out of your hair, and then follow the curly girl method without sulfates amd silicones :)
NellyPlaysMSP I remember when i first went Sulfate free and silicone free, i did one final wash with the sulfate shampoo, followed by a silicone free conditioner. Then next wash, the sulfate free shampoo, silicone free conditioner combo.
You want to do a final wash with a silicone free shampoo (it has to have sulfates in it to work). Some examples are Dawn dish soap or a baby shampoo. Then grab yourself a silicone and sulfate free conditioner (suave essentials, Shea moisture line, etc) and leave that in your hair for like 15-30mins, rinse and you're good. Then wash your hair with sulfate free and silicone free stuffs💖
To remove built up ->>> last wash, after shampoo, rinse with water and vinegar mix (1l water, 2 tb spoons vinegar). Apple or raspberry vinegar will do.
Thank you! We used so much vo5 on my hair as a kid trying to get big wads of tangles out...had to cut them sometimes. I want to grow my hair out but am scared of the tangles...going to try these suggestions.
My hair is fine but super curly (like a 3c) and BIG! My curls need product but so prone to breakage at the same time. Maybe I just don't know what I'm doing with my hair lol
I have found that the Original Curl Keeper is a very nice, lightweight styler. It is water-based so it rinses out very well. I am a fine, low porosity mixed texture (All type 2 and the underneath is 3a). They make a travel size so you can try it before buying a big bottle :)
xfortunesquex How do you deal with having a tighter curl pattern on the underneath? I have 3a on top with 3b underneath and my hair keeps growing out really weird. Is there any method to get the top layer to shrink more and underneath to curl less??
Is there anyway you can go on a search for people who don’t have the finances to get sulfate and silicone free shampoo and conditioner at cheaper prices? Yo girl who gets paid 100 a week will highly appreciate it 😭😭 and I’m glad to see you back. Always make videos because you love it. Even if it meant a posting once a month. As long as it’s not burdening you and that you love it. Love you Penpen ❤️❤️
Fio Cava Suave Essentials conditioner family size bottle will run you about $2-$3 a bottle, and some places do a buy one get one half off so you can get 2 bottles! I use it to wash with and as a leave in sometimes. I make my own hair gel, there are recipes online for those too (some even just use cornstarch and sugar as a gel, but I use flax seeds), there are even oils you can buy right from the baking section (olive oil and coconut oil are amazing) you can use those as a deep conditioner and in your regular routine (LOC or LCO method)
Garnier fructis curl nourish shampoo is sulfate free. Usually there are coupons in the sunday paper or sometimes on coupons.com. Also sometimes walgreens has garnier on sale and with coupons ive gotten garnier shampoos and conditioners as low as 50 cents apiece. Just keep in mind the curl nourish conditioner has silicones so you could get the garnier fructis sleek and shine zero condtioner which does not have silicones instead (conversely the sleek and shine zero unfortunately has sulfates). I hope this helps. I watch people like designerjen, savycouponshopper, and nicoleburgess to keep up to date on places that have sales and what coupons to pair with sales to get the best prices on things.
Great tips Penny! I have quite fine, but wavy sort of curly hair. The great thing about that is that the waves and curls make it look a lot thicker than it is. I was wondering if you could do a video recommending good deep conditioners, especially non coconut based ones. My hair is not a fan of coconut.
When u said said shampoo last and this sounds helpful cuz I have problems with oily hair and changing to sulfate and thanks for the tip for the scalp tip about the scalp
I am a guy with short hair, but I am over on this side of TH-cam because my hair condition looked horrible. After 3 days of silicone and sulphate free it looked so much better! Thanks
I feel like I have medium hair but I definitely experience a lot of breakage and I do get my hair weighed down especially a couple of days after my wash day; so I think I’ll try those ideas! 👍
I didn't know I was doing so WRONG I stayed jaw open along seeing you as my capillary good fairy finally showing up to save me from my misery, thank you so damn much
THANK YOU!! I have been using Shea Moisture for a long time now and still can't seem to find a conditioner with enough slip to detangle so I end up using like 5 gallons each shower- any recommendations would be SO appreciated! Love you Penny!
yes, i aggree with you with the ban to silicones. I love your tips and i am going to try the shampoo last... i get one curiosity just now @CurlyPenny, what is your hair type?
Penny i have 2c hair thats low density and homemade sugar hairspray over my styling products legit gives me volume and definition. (Since you said you tried everything "on the market") You should totally try this !!!
Fam I just wish I had more hair on my head
My hair total is one of your braids - if I'm lucky
I just wanna say to you that you’ve helped me with my curly hair problems for a long time now. I’m in 8th grade and I used to have a lot of damage and fizz for a lot of years cause I didn’t know how to deal with my curls. Now I’m 13 and my hair looks amazing because of you. Thank you so much. thin/fine curly hair gang 🤟
The struggle is SO real. Like Seriously. I have uberfine hair and compare myself to all of these TH-camrs and cry myself to sleep everynight. Jokes aside I want thick hair so badly. I guess I'm just reaching out here so I know that I am not alone haaah
no you are not, i m soo tired of my fine hair soo bad, I want thick hair too and I cry my self a lot about it
I just clicked out of a Naptural85 video due to thin hair related sadness.
When I put my hair down I can see through it... all the hair infront of me and I can see through it... my hair is very thin too.
I just want thinner hair
I had long hair as a child...2a baby fine yet thick hair. I would get awful rats in my hair. It has been short as an adult because of that.
I wanna try the shampoo last thing. I didn't know about that.
Maria Zapata It really works!!
Adi Uzumaki you tried it?
Rutuja Dicholkar not yet tomorrow is wash day.
Rutuja Dicholkar yeah but I added a little conditoner after shampooing again. Results: super smooth hair and glossy hair (maybe it still would've been the same w/o the extra conditioner)
Used: treseme conditioner and shea butter shampoo.
Adi Uzumaki thanks boo
The shampoo last tip worked, I have so much definition and volume
I must be the only curly girl with fine hair
Layla Amador I know a lot of girls that have fine curls
I have the flattest, fine, curly hair. You're not alone.
I have that too. Or ... I have fine very thin hair. Hahaha. Don't understand how I can have curls too, but I do.
The hairdressers usually destroy my hair, so I cut it myself. Haha.
Nah I have thin-medium too :)
You're not alone my hair is very fine/thin and curly. Very prone to breakage.
This year I WILL get my curls back. I will stop dying, straightening my hair and also thanks for the tshirt tip!
Hey! So did you get your curls back? :)
How’d it go?
How’d it go?
Same I just hope I can bring my curls back
That's what happened to me...my hair is wavy v.s when i was younger it was curly...i ruined my curl pattern.
So I tried the conditioner first and shampoo last and at first I really didn’t think it would work but after trying it I seriously love this idea! It makes my curls so defined! Thank you
Hey Penny! Just want to let you know...
GURL I FWEAKING LOVE YOU!
thanks fam
CurlyPenny could these tips help for straight fine hair
I'll definitely be giving the deep conditioning a try. Low density hair is a struggle
Penny giving me the 8th grade feels in that Gerard Way tshirt!! Ahhhh!!!
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Space Cat Don't put conditioner on the scalp. If you want moisture on your scalp then do a hot oil massage.
PopSicko thx for thw tip ^^
Space Cat sebum from your natural hair follicle already moisturizes it. That’s why we don’t put conditioner on the scalp. It will just weigh down the hair a lot!
"CALM DOWN FOOL!"
I love penny!

Can you make a video on hair that’s been bleached and dyed at home and damaged. Thxxx
Conditioning before shampooing has changed my life! Thanks Penny!!
yay!
Girl don’t lie your GORGEOUS hair looks thick AF. Maybe you got good at taking care at ur hair??
Her hair is definitely healthy and gorgeous, but it's naturally more on the thinner side. When I put my hair into two braids, like hers is in this video, my braids are literally about twice as thick as hers because I have very thick hair, haha.
+Pettyy Boo it looks thick from tricks (: I’m gonna make a volume video!
Uni Corn right my one braid would be half her size
my braids are thinner than hers but when my hair os dry it looks like i have alot of hair cuz im just floofy
Is there an affordable build up remover than Devacurl’s build up buster that you would recommend?
Naima K i found that mixing apple cider vinegar + water helps remove the build up. Your type of hair will settle the ratio. Ie: My hair is oily so i use less of acv with more water (this was a trial-error base) 😊
Kinky Curly makes a great one and much cheaper than Deva Curl. Can buy it at Target
Naima K, I am a 2b/2c wavy girl and I use about 1/2 a teaspoon of baking soda, 1 teaspoon of sulfate free shampoo, and get it sudsy and just shampoo my scalp, it works for me.
Any shampoo that says clarifying
Try just baking soda and water , works so good
You're the reason why I am able to wear curly hair everyday.. Thanks for all these wonderful videos.. You made me meet the best part of my personality.. My curls.. Thanks Penny!!
THIS VIDEO SAVED ME!!!! CONDITIONER FIRST AND SHAMPOOING LAST DID SO GOOD FOR MY CURLS!!!!
I have thick hair but I'm still watching this cuz I love you Penny
ARMY is EVERYWHERE Same lol
ARMY is EVERYWHERE same
Wie really are everywhere 💪
We're truly everywhere lol
Esme Pamez_28 same ❤
You inspired me to go heat free and grow out my bleached hair! Hoping my curls can reach their true potential! :)
I (and I think others too) would really appreciate if you could make a video on shampoos and conditioners that are sulfate, silicone and paraben free
I may have said this before, but thanks to your videos I stopped putting heat on my hair and started embracing my curls! I've learned so much about curly hair and it is because of you! Thank youuuuuuu
my hair is so thin when I look down you can literally see through my hair
Same
When you got thicker hair than anyone in the world but still watch the video because it's from Penny
DJ Candido same bro i ❤️her vids
I’m jealous 🥺
Please tell us your secrets?🥺
It’s genetics , other than healthy diet and grooming you can’t change it like you can’t change your eye shape
I can’t do the shampoo thing last it just makes my hair too dry
if it's sulfate free, it should not be drying, also only use it on the scalp, not the ends of your hair (:
CurlyPenny I use all Devacurl products but I need the moisture from the conditioner to tame the frizz. Also girl I’ve been with you for like 2.5 years of course I’m not using sulfates 😹😹.
Love the thumbnail😂❤
Totally agree with tip #2, you mentioned in a previous video and I tried a few days ago and the difference was HUGE!
You are gifted communicator, truly. Keep up the good work. You have a lot of talent. Look forward to your next videos.
apple cider vinegar diluted in water to remove build up!
Yaaas
how much apple cider vinegar do you mix with water?
Imane Dao I usually do 1 part ACV and 2 parts water
My grandmother used to rinse my hair with vinegar
Imane Dao I’m not sure of the measurements honestly I eye ball it I am sorry lol
I got wavy thin hair and it takes me forever to find a video for thin hair , thanks lol
I have fine hair (baby fine hair) but a lot of it. Hairdressers were always surprised when they used to color my hair, that they needed to make more of the color, as they only got 75% through it. Thank you so much! Your channel has really helped me. I've been wanting someone to help guide me in how to take care of my crazy hair. I'm so happy I found you! Thank you! 😊💕💕
My hair is so frizzy on the scalp. How do I combat that without putting styler there? 😖
Hey Penny! I have short curly hair so I can't really put my hair up when I'm going to sleep. Is there anything else I can do? Thank you!
Beef and Cheese you could use a bonnet, silk scarf or silk pillowcase.
Ah! Thank you!
Beef and Cheese Welcome!
I like a low ponytail just at the nape of my neck. Also you can just leave it which I do sometimes and just use a satin pillowcase!!! Since my hair is too short to pineapple I swear by these.
Get a little cloth headband and pull it back, then wrap it in a soft scarf or use a satin pillow case
The shampoo after conditioner trick though ❤️ gives me amazing volume
Love the shampoo last recommendation. Going to try that one!
Not sure if others notice.. but I adore that you use sign language...such as the 'number sign' as well as the correct number signs....im going to school as an interpreter and my brother is deaf.....so it's near and dear to my heart!!! Also I'm a curly girl too!! Keep it upp!!!!
I struggled with damaged hair almost all my life until I discovered you. You saved my life penny!💗💗

Oye! Check you out still using the ASL numbers! Woohoo!
I’m weirded out about shampooing last, but I’ma try it! You haven’t steered me wrong yet.
+Nikki Hatcher only shampoo the scalp, NOT the ends of your hair!
i've been using contiditoner on my scalp for years bc of a tip you used to give for hair growth! will try to not use conditioner nor shampoo on my roots no more and see what happens
When yo hair is less than a quarter of what the youtuber who is saying their hair is thin and fine 8( OMG I want my hair to get thicker and grow!

Thanks for the tips and always being you! What deep conditioners do you recommend with protein that aren’t too heavy for fine hair?
Thanks for the video. I would love to see an updated curly hair routine, especially since you mentioned that you don't apply products near your scalp. I usually do that, but I didn't know that it was a bad thing. I would like to see how you apply products.
M literally having no hair on my hairline :( hoping these tips will save my hair 😭
Xena T same :(
Castor oil for the edges
Xena T same I’m to scared to do a pony tail bc of that
I know this comment was sent over 10 months ago but try Jamaican black castor oil massages before showering about once a week. I’ve heard its great for growing thick and long hair! I’m going to be trying it soon
Omg I love ur videos because u have the same type of curls as me and ur advice actually works🥰
I finally feel like I’m not alone, I thought that my hair was getting unhealthy because it was thin but now i realise that it may just be normal 💓 x
is satin silk okay instead of pure silk? If not then I'll definitely buy the latter :)
+Neetu Yes! Mine is satin (:
You are an awesome person, and I really enjoy and get a lot out of these videos. Thank you!!
Very informative, can you suggest diy deep conditioner for dry low porosity hair

Thanks for recommending moptop curly custard, it is now my favorite styler too.

Thank you! We used so much vo5 on my hair as a kid trying to get big wads of tangles out...had to cut them sometimes. I want to grow my hair out but am scared of the tangles...going to try these suggestions.
The robot part at 1:25 had me smiling so hard dude lol; you're videos are so awesome! Thank you for the tips!!! :D
Omg I've been waiting for this video FOR SO LONG. FINALLY!!
+triba123 :D
Thank you, Penny! I've been needing this 😩 You da best ❤️ IG fam 💕
MrsG87 Thank you!!! I do use the suave conditioner! But I’ve been trying to look for a food sulfate free shampoo 🤔 any recommendations?
Fio Cava CurlyPenny has done some videos on a few products. I don't use shampoo at all (I cowash) but there are also some DIY shampoo recipes online 😊
You are awesome! Thank you for all the info. It was very helpful.
Hi Penny..Can you please tell me whether gelatin treatment on hair is good for strengthening of fine hair?
Great tips Penny! I have quite fine, but wavy sort of curly hair. The great thing about that is that the waves and curls make it look a lot thicker than it is. I was wondering if you could do a video recommending good deep conditioners, especially non coconut based ones. My hair is not a fan of coconut.
Thanks! I have thin hair and will try shampooing last!
You are so cool! I love your videos! You have such a great personality, love your expressions!
Hi @curlypenny what are your opinions on maui moisture products? I use the coconut milk one for dry hair ☺️
5:38 omg when she said fine ladies😂😂lmao i love u penny 💙💙
I have thin/fine straight hair but this is useful! Me encanta tu estilo 🤘🏻
Can you do the video on conditioning before and shampooing later?
When u said said shampoo last and this sounds helpful cuz I have problems with oily hair and changing to sulfate and thanks for the tip for the scalp tip about the scalp
used to straighten my hair at max heat no heat protection for 4 YEARS. really need to get my shit together
i think i’m also going to need your skin care routine 😍
I am a guy with short hair, but I am over on this side of TH-cam because my hair condition looked horrible. After 3 days of silicone and sulphate free it looked so much better! Thanks
Always loving your thumbnails, always do you XD 💜
Can I do the shampoo last with the deva curl low poo delight and one condition delight? I have zero volume with my 2c/3a hair ☹️
Penny i have 2c hair thats low density and homemade sugar hairspray over my styling products legit gives me volume and definition. (Since you said you tried everything "on the market") You should totally try this !!!
Please make a video on best curly hair conditioners:)
