My heart smiled at Amelia's door and view over that river. Let me explain: when she was much younger, she would climb onto her family's roof and look east over the Missouri at Atchison, Ks., and see herself flying over it like the eagles that lived there. It is known that it inspired her for the rest of her life. That cabin door and overlook was surely a reminder of that. You go, Amelia :)

I should also note much of the old city of Atchison is built on high bluffs overlooking the Missouri on the Kansas side, and the sun would rise east, hitting the city and house before the lands and river below and over the flood plains on the Missouri side.

Very cool to see it all again.
So, here is some more backstory. My grandfather, Carl M Dunrud was the one building the cabin for Amelia Earhart.
He was born in 1891, and left home in Minnesota at a young age to find adventure out west. He worked ranches for a while and was a horse trainer/vet for cavalry horses during WWI. When the war ended he went to Yellowstone and fell in love with the place. He started leading pack trips into the Park in 1919 and in 1920 or so became a Ranger, still leading dudes into the park. On one of these trips George Palmer Putnam was one of the dudes. Anyway, he and my grandfather hit it off. In 1925, Putnam invited him out to New York and ultimately this led to Dunrud going on an Arctic voyage captained by Bob Bartlett, who had been Peary's captain. But that is a different story:
    th-cam.com/video/-xhIHFKVDzU/w-d-xo.html
In 1928, My grandfather and his partner build the Double Dee ranch, which is about 5 miles below where Amelia's cabin is located. They ran it until 1940. As you mentioned, in 1924, Amelia Earhart visited and fell in love with the place.

Next time you should consider going up further into the mountains. There are some spectacular views along Dunrud Pass, where my grandfather used to take the Dudes on pack trips.

Tristan, you have remarked that videography is not an emphasis of what you're doing here. But, as a videographer, I can't help but notice just how epic your drone shots have become, the added perspective of GoPro dashboard footage, and last but not least, your mastery of the selfie stick. The change of hand at 9:00 was very slick. Polished. As to attention to detail, most of us would have missed the horseshoe gate lock. Still, content remains the point of your work. That's what brings us back. Thanks for sharing.

This one was especially fascinating to me. Back in 1980 and 1981 I worked in the Four Bear Oil Field, which was just a little north of here, but I never had any idea about the Amelia Earhart cabin. I got my first 4WD vehicle back then and would just follow roads to explore them and see where they went, but this is one I never explored. Now I want to go back, even though I live more than 1000 miles away. I would come across lots of 1800s-era cabins back then, but never had any knowledge of their history.

Editing would polish it up to be much better. Five minutes of content does not make a good 15+ minute video.
And the negative comments about Amelia's life and accomplishments by some twit that probably can't drive a car very well....its sad. But another commenter got it straight. Once these aholes are dead in 10 years no one will think, speak or recall them. Yet today we remember a young woman who dared to live her dream.
But- Haters hate that's all they know. If it hadn't been for them " I would have never known Santa Klas was far, Easter bunny is gay and Zorro was not a real Mexican.

Loved it! I caught myself quickly clicking through a commercial because I "didn't have the time" since it was going to be getting dark soon. I grew up on a river and fell asleep most nights listening to bobcats screaming from the other side. So many terrified nights I imagined them crossing the river and showing up outside my bedroom window. Many years later as an adult on that same river we were visited by something dark, scary and smelly for a few months. Florida Skunk Ape possibly? We never saw it until he started showing up in our nightmares. For me he had piercing yellow eyes that just locked on me with no escape. Another neighbor saw him big and ape like with goat heads coming from the armpits, possibly because the smell of a wet goat permeated the woods from time to time. To alleviate our growing paranoia we named him Arnie. And to encapsulate Arnie into a safe place in our wrecked psyches I wrote him into a poem naturally. Its called, Ode to Arnie and I'll see if I can recall it....
As these curious shadows arise and fall,
Your legend, dear Arnie, looms large and tall.
A covert presence, never seen only heard
Casts little doubt on your tale of scourge.
Some gruesome beast of nightmarish guise,
I foster the screams of your prey's demise.
Crying that trails from moans to whimper,
Mournful sounds that only death could temper.
And as I walk so alone this evening,
It is these thoughts that keep me thinking.
For I know it is you that creeps behind
Where in this darkness I cannot find.
Has my passage grasped your gaze
And set it upon my timid craze?
I stifle this urge to quicken my haste
To do so I'm certain would summon your chase.
Attending my lot with equable measure
    Surely evokes you no displeasure?
And yet, an odious furor encroaches my back.
Exhorting my will of your illicit attack.
Oh be damned you miserable creature of night,
Leave me alone with my tortured fright!
But no, this is not the game to be played
My curse befalls to honor in this charade
For it seems to be me who is deemed to be damned
    And my last breath.....
To be at your command (gasp!)
I like to share it this time of year so thanks for lending me your cause🍁 And now you know why I clicked though those commercials to quickly get back to safety before dark😄
I will definitely see those mountains!

Liked the video. I drove from Cody, Wyoming to Rock Springs, Wyoming back in 1994 and passed through this area. It was great to see the area on foot instead of seeing it while blasting down the highway. Also, I remember watching an episode of "This Old House" many years ago that had Norm Abrams packing in on horseback with some Forest Service workers. Their goal was to do some maintenance work on some backcountry cabins. Forest Service rules require that no power tools were allowed, only hand tools. They packed in from Meteetse on horses and mules.

The beginning shot was so beautiful and like nothing I've ever seen on any video, it looked fake, then when the drone flew over top of you, it was breath taking! I have watched every single one of your videos and that beginning scene has to be your top EVER shot! You show us places we never would know existed in USA. Thanks! I was thinking, Oh I want to go there until I saw you climbing up those steep loose rocks! I'll just settle for enjoying it from your point of view. Truly awesome trip! I first saw the Grand Tetons in 1958 when I was nine, the oldest of 4 kids. All of our family vacations were camping & hiking trips from home in Indiana to all over the country. Dad would say oh look, there's a trail/path/dirt road, I wonder where it goes. .. mom's answer was a groan, as off we went. At 18, I moved to the mountains and deserts of the West that had kept calling to me since childhood. And up til now I've continued answering the urge to see it all, as have my 3 siblings, while at the same time learning that a lifetime isn't long enough to see it all. It's a bittersweet truth but also one that makes me extremely grateful for each vista I've seen and every trail traveled. I just discovered your channel and I must tell you, it feels like home! Thank you so much for adding experiences that I haven't gotten to yet (and may never have enough time to).
A thought about the eerie animal sound you heard: hunters, trackers and natives swear that the most otherworldly noise in all of nature is the high-pitched, blood-curdling scream of a female mountain lion. She may be miles away but the echo throughout canyons and cliffs can make it sound like she's right at your door. That's how I describe it too. Some tribes say that if - upon hearing it - you wonder if you may possibly need to change your pants, then it's indeed a female mountain lion or its lost spirit. Cheers!

What I don't like is the small parts where you put the camera down to video tape you walking, because I know then you have to walk back and get that camera unless you plant the drone and then turn and bring the drone back to you. It makes me tired out knowing you have to go back and fetch that camera. I think I would enjoy it more if you just on and off showed like the go pro when you are climbing.
