It is so enjoyable to see someone with such a wealth of knowledge in film making still discovering and enjoying the creativity, rather than just relying on their previous 'set of tools'. That enthusiasm is contagious, especially reading others comments on how much these videos inspire them.
Nothing beats those hand drawn lightning/laser effects in 80s movies - and in most cases the worse it looks the better. Look up the fantasy movie Conquest (1983) where the main character has a bow and arrow that glows like this. It's glorious. And the whole movie is shot through intense filters and smoke to make it feel other worldly.
The only problem I see is there is no way the final film can turn out as interesting and entertaining as the "making of" videos :) Excellent work, thank you!
@@sliceoflifefilm No! Thank you! You've inspired me to make my short film with miniatures! Slice of Life, InCamera, Pierce Film Productions channels are inspiring! Thank you, thank you!
You DID it! Yet again… I think that any 80’s special effects creator would be proud and amazed. Lit up even. Electrified with excitement. Shocked.. Love it 😊🥰👊🕺🏻🏝️🇦🇺
Wow this is incredible. This is exactly the kind of stuff that got me interested in visual effects when I was a kid - the tactile clever magic tricks in front of the lens. Just awesome!
Another technique that may be worth a try is to adapt an effect from theatre: using a slide projector modified to work with a camera flashbulb, and casting the image of the lightning onto the cyclorama. The flashbulb creates a sharp attack/slow decay effect that produces a convincing lightning illusion. For film, the effect might work better on a miniature set, with the sky backdrop painted on a translucent surface and the lightning rear-projected.
Luka, you are a genius, man. Not just one really clever idea to do it but several really great ones. Also appreciate you showing the ones that didn't work out so well, you're a great teacher too!
SkyDude help me, I laughed at the end joke - out loud. To be fair, I was so engaged in the process you went through to make the lightning happen, I was jolted into laughing.
We really need a moment to re-appreciate just how amazing slice of life looked. That shot is every bit as good as one from blade runner. If you ever come to sell a matte painting from sol please let me know
I think its quite nice that the buildings illuminate after the lightning struck. It might not be physically logical but it looks like the lightning is much further away and the light needed some time to travel until it illuminated the buildings. So its a great way to bring some 3 dimensional depth into the image!!
Very cool to watch you try different oldskool ways of making it work without using stock digital effects. It feels like the best (and certainly most interesting) fit for this movie. Keep it up! 👍
Driving through Croatia next week. Got all excited, told everyone that this is where that legendary studio behind Slice of Life with that dope miniature vfx TH-cam channel is. Meanwhile, my family is scratching their heads, thinking I've been sniffing the wrong stuff 😄
You explained it very well by showing how they did it, and how you can do it. I learned a lot by now from your videos, thanks a lot ❤❤ Fingers crossed for the 100.000 subs you deserved it ❤ ❤
Also fun fact, on Predator 2 they shot the balcony lighting reveal, by collecting exposures throughout the day on a locked off tripod then edited them together out of sequence together dramatic bouncing shadows that stretched across the entire city. Like animating the sun for lightning
Yeah and this is whatmaking movies is all about. Experimenting your butt off till it is right.. I guess in the days without CG people had to use their brains... 1000 percent overdrive to get something realistic. When i was younger i watched a movie .called .. Attack of the 50 feet women .. She was huge.. He was small.... All done without cg... She was in swimming pool.. He was standing 100 meters away.. They linked it by hand painting the pool tiles way bigger in the distance .. So in camera they had the same size...and the actors had different size And i was like Wooooow ... That was the day i wanted to do special effects too.. Thank you for sharing 😊😊❤
Looks good. I mean there isn't a lot of interaction with the scene, but it works. Hand-painting these optical effects on animation cels was one of the first thing I did in the industry in the late 70s, some time before even touching a computer.
Oh wow! I can't believe people who actually created these effects watch our videos. I hope I didn't say anything wrong or stupid 😂 It's extremely hard to find any info on these effects so we just try as best as we can. Thanks a lot for watching! ♥️
You're a genius. I would have never thought of some of your techniques for the lightening effects. I forgot to mention to you before that I live in Houston, TX and have been to NASA (Johnson Space Center) a lot of times. So I hope to see Splashback at some time in the future.
the amount of details is shocking. By now I think I have seen everyframe of splashback at least 10 times ans I didn't actualy see the film ! Can't wait for it (and probably will see it at least 10 times)
I just recently found you channel and even though I don't do any video editing or movie making, I find you videos awesome and very entertaining! Thank you for the excellent work.
Your way is impressive and resourceful.👱🏻👍🏻 I also had this challenge with the depiction of 4 lightenings🌌 striking the logo of the radio podcast from 4 angles which highlights the logo liting it up through spreading fatone wave as an aftereffect of these strikes. But I handled it a bit different way, which can be seen at 54th second from start of the 12th video from the top on my channel.
Great demonstration on "old school" Analogue effects, and nice humor! You really should have over 100,000 subs by now, your toilet really needs that silver You Tube plaque, the decor in that room is not going to be complete till you have that on the wall!🤣🤣🤣
Damn, what a great hack Luka! Good job! Filiming through different medium definitely made it much more organic. I was wondering for the rain falling in this shot, were you guys intentionally trying to make it look miniature like by having the water droplets be really big and long? Since the gantry is so far away, having those waves of distant rain would look much cooler. You can do it using flour particles suspended in air falling gently, when you use cardboard or something to fan them, they go all together like distant rain waves.
hm... never used flour. We should give it a go for sure and see how it works. But the main problem is that the gantry is barely a foot tall so it's definitely way too small for any kind of rain effects. If it was 3-4 times bigger it would all be perfect, ofc!
I love that stencil idea, I actually might try that but… you know? Digitally… as in try using an illustrator file of a lightening shape then use a luma matte
So I did a super nice lighting effect by using a thick sheet of glass (I wish I could remember the type of glass, as I swear it had a name), with black matting behind it, and over the very tip top of it. Lights out. Camera set up. And we shot a bolt of electricity thru it. Best practical lighting effect I’ve ever done. I suggest giving this a try. We had little anchor bolts at the bottom glued into rubber we could move around to direct the lighting. If you don’t it just spreads out like a big huge tree which is pretty neat on its own. Anyways it provides all the light itself and you simple place it where you want it in post. This was 11 years ago now. So I can’t remember every specific detail but it was easy to make. (Edit) forgot to mention your trick looks pretty good too tho.
This is all super cool to see and i admit the result is amazing, but i am interested as to why you think practical would always look better, as you said in your description, or if that was a joke
Well look. Anything I always say is said half jokingly 😂 But... I dont wanna put down CGI because it definitely has its use and we also use it all the time, but in a way I do believe practical effects have a certain feel and charm that CGI lacks. They are physical objects or effects filmed by a physical camera and the result just feels more real... Or palpable, if that word makes sense.
@@sliceoflifefilm idk, sometimes vfx does do a better job at realism, minatures look more stylized imo. For example, your lightning effect does look nice, but it isn't as accurate to the irl lightning clips you showed as I've seen digitally created lightning. Again, it still looks nice, but some things can't get as accurate unless there is 100% control of how it looks through specific materials, parameters, etc., if that makes sense. Vfx is a lot more common than you realize, you'd be surprised how much you don't notice it sometimes
Man, your solution to animate the lightning in-camera was simply genius.
