I’m so excited, I actually cried when I heard the announcement. During the final year of my animation degree, I developed a drawing injury that has left me disabled for the last 4 years. I have chronic pain in my hands and upper body; drawing is now painful for me and my dreams of working as an animator (which I’d dedicated my life to achieving since the age of 8) felt so distant and unachievable that I’ve been grieving and struggling to accept that they were probably over for 2-3 years now.
But this gives me so much hope! These intuitive tools aren’t just good because they’re easy for newcomers, but they’ll make it so much easier for me and other artists with hand disabilities or drawing injuries to keep doing the things they love! And hopefully the quick and easy nature of the tools will make it harder to develop these injuries in the first place! I want to thank these developers so much but I don’t know how; this could change my life and help me take back control of my future ❤
Omg, I’m so sorry to hear about your injury, for as much as it’s worth I truly believe you can still chase your dreams and make great things! art comes from the soul and I can tell just by reading your story that the injury has not taken that away from you ❤

I don't want to be animator, but I still got extremely excited about this. I don't know much about animation and it is really intimidating, but I'd love to try something already for ages. I think this will be a huge game changer for many people like me. But obviously, also for those who already are somewhat advanced. I'm definitely hoping my iPad will be in between of the supported ones and that I can have a play with it!
I don’t know the system requirements yet. It seemed like since they’re working on optimisation until the launch day there might still be more they can do on that front. During the event they weren’t committing to any specific ipad versions yet.

You could definitely feel the excitement in the room. People were audibly gasping when they announced that price. I guess everyone was expecting something way more expensive after hearing about all the features.
I’m really excited for procreate dreams. I like procreate for its simplicity. It’s the only thing that doesn’t frustrate me whenever I try animating so the fact that they’re coming out with an entire animation app has me really excited. And I can use my favorite brushes??? It’s a win win. Really looking forward to it.
Select by Color, contiguous ("Magic Wand") smart selections, and aliased vs. anti-aliased selections are all desperately needed options in Procreate for the way I color images I draw. As it stands, the 'save selection' helps a lot, but still falls short of the ability to effortlessly select sections of a canvas that I want to work on when coloring and rendering comic book style.
Hello. My respect to Procreate team and cheap price politics, I trust them too much and I feel like I can buy aything of this team without any doubts. Because of the easy use of Procreate I am sure that Procreat Dreams would teach me lots of things. I hope Procreate grows up more with their inspirational development And thanks for your presentation too :)

If you’re paying for AE then in that budget 19.99 doesn’t make a dent really so personally I would get it in addition to AE. AE is great for motion graphics and design related stuff and as such I don’t think these 2 compete with each other. The more I learn about AE the more I kind of love it but it’s definitely not suitable for beginners. The ribbon animations in this video were done in AE.
I’d really like to see an equivalent to Photoshop’s Match Color for art and photo composites.
Cancel AE because Adobe are scumbags :‘)
It sounds like it will make animation much easier, more fun, I don't normally spend money on software, but I'll probably buy it, too useful, best animation software I've ever seen.
Animation in Procreate was so slow that while the results were exciting, as a content creator it really made me question whether I should be using so much time on one painting. This makes it easier to justify that time use because you can do a lot more in a shorter amount of time.
I am looking forward to Procreate Dreams. I have an interest in making animations, but always felt it was too complicated to even bother attempting. However, it seems that Procreate Dreams will be a much more intuitive platform for learning to create my own illustrations. For a one-time purchase of $20, it's certainly worth a try!
This is a great moment to jump in too. While it’s great that they’re adding more features in the future. It’s inevitable that those features will make the learning curve steeper for new users. If you start learning it at launch the new things will be much easier to learn in isolation when you don’t have the whole rest of the app to master at the same time.

I cannot freaking wait for this to release, I've dipped my toes in animation here and there but this seems soo much more accessible than just the hand drawn - frame by frame stuff and would make it easier to create finished projects while slowly learning and implementing hand drawn elements
One of my goals and dreams was to animate my stories, but I knew I had a long way to go to learn about complicated and expensive animation programs, and suddenly this wonderful product thought to make animation possible for everybody (as Procreate describes Procreate Dreams in their sales page) was announced. This is amazing! I can't describe how excited, happy and motivated I feel!
I have reviewed animation software for years. This is a mind blowing break through. Aaron is a friend of mine and absolutely amazing guy. With his approval…it is a must have!

I’m old enough to recall having my mind completely blown by watching my first Popeye cartoon as a kid on a homescreen projector.
It was far more mind bending than seeing Star Wars or Marvel movies for anyone born in 1954, because (unlike Disney) it was our introduction to the phenomenal world of whimsical animation that would be considered “street level” today!!
Although I’m an illustrator, I also spent my entire life trying to re-create the magical feeling of that era to no avail - UNTIL NOW 😳
Thanks to Dreams, (and your pal, Aaron Blaise tutorials) I’m currently experiencing an UNPARALLELED breakthrough in TRADITIONAL animating!!
Kids today can HAVE their “time saving” features and digital puppetry.
The trend these days is to seek faster mechanical ways to create, because EVERYONE KNOWS that traditional animation is waay “TOO HARD”, but because Dreams feels so much like a sketchbook, I’m FINALLY learning how to DRAW and EMOTE effectively through old school animation techniques!!
As Aaron Blaise demonstrates, HARD is GOOD!!!
Right now, skills of the the PAST seems to be the most FUTURISTIC algorithm to aspire to.
I can sum up Procreate Dreams in one word.

Select by colour, absolutely yes! I'd love to see more robust selection tools generally, but that one thing would be a massive step towards Procreate standing by itself for start to finish artwork through the whole colour tweaking process.
I've never done any animating in anything at all, unless you could making flip books out of paper. I do plan to buy it when it comes out, and this video is encouraging-- if the tools are as intuitive to use as Procreate's own, and there's a good bit of continuity between them, it should be a lot easier for a beginner familiar with Procreate to pick up. Helpful videos from you will make it so much better! Looking forward to it-- thank you Mikko!

Really looking forward to Procreate Dreams! A feature that I would absolutely love is if the Performance Mode could record your drawing strokes or brushstrokes and convert them into keyframes!!! That would change my life!!!!

Do we know yet if you will be able to import things you've made in Procreate so you can animate them in Dreams?
Dreams has its own file format so we know you can’t bring those into procreate however the other way around might be possible since you could literally just copy paste the layers anyway so I can’t imagine how that conversion wouldn’t be easy to code. There are no Procreate specific blend modes or layer grouping systems that aren’t already available in Dreams.
I did see a Goro Fujita painting get animated in Dreams and I assumed in that demo that the original came from Procreate in that instance.

I’ve been begging for this for YEARS and just seen this?? I’ve been animating in procreate for a bit and always wished they had (I’m not sure what they’re called) but ways to move an animation across the screen, transitions maybe? Where the object could move left or right, shake, stretch or jump etc. without having to manually do it! I’m so excited for this, and looking forward to your tutorials! My bday is in Nov and this will be a gift to myself! So cheap too??

I’m sure there are plenty of ideas that will come just from playing around with these tools. I think I could even make stuff that I could use IN these videos like animated lower third cards or chapter titles. They could even be templates because Dreams has text too.

And a way to scale/resize an object by typing in a value, not just snapping (at least in OG Procreate). Pleasssse Procreate 🙏🏾
Did you know that you can just tap the scaling rectangle and a menu will pop up that lets you input exact numbers? This works on the phone version too btw 🐻
Thx for your thoughts on this mate. I can’t imagine my iPad Pro gen 2 will run this well. Time to upgrade.
I hope the next ipad will have a more noticeable effect on speed compared to the last generation. M1 is still outperforming M2 in some tests so I haven’t felt compelled to upgrade yet. Whatever you do make sure you check the ram on the device you are choosing. The storage space divides each version of ipad into 2 categories with the bigger storage models having double the ram.
@@angrymikko yea mate.. procreate runs pretty well on mine and haven’t felt the need to upgrade either. This might do it and I don’t animate. oh I did not know this.. definitely will look into the ram aspect. Thx mate
Have you raised a feature request in the official procreate support forum? You could direct viewers to that and it’ll become far more likely they implement it. I was really positively surprised how many user requests they implemented over the years. Very different to the desperate bug fix requests in the Adobe CC forums that often don’t get worked on for many years…
Definitely sounds like a good idea. There might be a request like this already so I should probably just link to that one in case I get so petty I make an entire video about it. (Look I’m definitely not above that kinda behaviour ☝️🐻)

After Effects is pretty complicated but it’s great for effects and motion graphics. Dreams is a different app but it’s also for a different purpose.
Absolutely, so I kept using it for a couple of years so I can master video editing but I prefer much better Final Cut Pro@@angrymikko
Final cut is completely for a different purpose too. FC is more comparable to Premiere Pro. Doing video editing in After Effects wouldn’t make sense because the interface is really designed for shorter clips and effects.
Premiere and FC are organised for editing in the way different parts of the edit have their own slots in the UI. The effects are limited for the sake of declutter.
Before I thought premiere and AE would have some overlap in their workflows because they’re Adobe products but in truth they’re like night and day in the way they’re laid out.
I’m fairly decent with Premiere but when it comes to effects I’m still learning a lot every time I make motion graphics for my video projects.

This is a long dream coming for me, I didn't get a chance to become and artist/animation, as I never thought it could happen, back in those days, it was easy and (There was not a lot of women doing animation). So I am very excited on where this will go.. big hugs.
I think it’s great that we’re going to see animations from all kinds of artists around the world. I will probably be in classroom soon as well because it looked like I’ll be teaching concept art again soon 🐻

I’m using toonsquid as an animation app rn. And it’s magnificent and very time efficient, so I hope procreate can reach the level of toonsquid
I hope the add skeleton rigging or a puppet feature to animate characters
I just got into adding subtle animation to illustrations. I am very curious to see what this app could do. I am not sure it will run on my older ipad pro, but if it does, I surely will give it a go. It looks very slick, but I wonder if it is also as easy as it looks, and if it can be precise. I use Clip Studio Paint, which uses a more traditional approach to animation, but also keyframe support. It can sometimes be a bit difficult to wrap your head around, but I do feel that once you know how, it is quite efficient. And the fact that I can use it on the desktop is huge for me, as it is just way more comfortable than having to hold an ipad all the time (even if it is on a stand). I wish Procreate would release a desktop version of dreams too, but I guess it will never happen...
Every video I see about this program makes me more excited to try it!
(And I'm really hoping we get some of these things on OG Procreate 🙏🏼 the lack of cropping outside the canvas and the bigger canvas are super exciting,)
Honestly the price point for the current app doesn't seem bad to me, it seems so feature rich. I've done a few simple animations but I think this is going to be a game changer from "this is something that I do occasionally and it takes forever" to "this is something I routinely do."

Didn’t even think of that. To be honest my shaky hand with the lasso tool is my “how to make natural looking mountains”-combo. However I can see how smooth selections could help with graphic style illustrations for example.
I’m not usually into animation, but I might get this. Especially because they plan on keeping the one time price fairly low. I really want an animation app similar to Live 2d. I find that kind of animation Fascinating. But I think I’ll have fun with Procreate Dreams
I’ve used Spine and After Effects but never live 2d. Can’t say how similar Dreams is to that one.

There’s going to be a lot more people creating their own animations and whether you’re a Dreams user or not we’re all going to benefit from the wider variety of new films and animation projects people make on their own.

Yes please select by color. I could make multiple colorways in my tiling designs sooooo much easier with that feature.
Absolutely. And if you have seen any of my colour editing streams on the membership you know that I use it ALL the time when I’m tweaking my colours.
I honestly wish this was created much earlier so I can use it for my 2D class

Are they going to update procreate with the not crying when’s outside of the edges of the canvas? That rope be amazing
I wonder if it will have animation tween, might be called that, where someone makes bones to be able to move arms, etc, instead of having to draw each frame.
There’s no skeleton rigs if that’s what you mean but you could use the layer elements to get the same movement. But there’s no IK restraints or such.

As much as these apps are amazing I feel that both Procreate but especially Dreams ought to be ported to a desktop platform as well.
Trying to animate in not even a 13 inch screen with all menus etc could become a bit challenging.
As they have said several times; it’s not happening. I can’t speak on their behalf but having developed apps for ios the platform already has multiplie resolutions, aspect ratios and versions to test. Yet the closed system makes it doable in an effective way where you don’t need to spend months and months in testing every feature on an endless combinations of hardware. Based on my experience I’m guessing that’s the reason why PC or Mac versions aren’t happening. Plus it’s a UI fully built for touch controls.
Just my 2cents on this.
This is gonna be a great animation app! Just one question, can you lower the resolution because that might kill the storage lol
You can set your own and there are multiple presets form film and social media. You can go as low as ig video resolution if that’s what you feel like.
The images going beyond borders is ammmaaaazing! Do you know how rotate or scale works? It's the one thing in Prrcreteate that is just so bad. Thanks for the video, super helpful :)
Scaling seems similar but the midpoint handles were missing. It seemed like the entire edge can be used for scaling and touching the screen with a finger at the same time locked the transform to the current aspect ratio. (Uniform? I’m blanking out on the name of that mode) Rotations seemed different because of the handle was replaced by a different mode in the bounding box. I don’t have an issue with the rotations as they were but it looks like it’s going to change probably to make it easier to manipulate during a performance recording.
@@angrymikko thanks for the info :) i always find that it caused pixelation issues in procreate so I’m hoping that in the animation app it will be a bit better.
That animation Aaron did he said that took two months for him to work on that animation. Procreate Dreams is a game changer it is amazing how far animation tools have come from what I remember that was available when I was a young adult in the late 80s and 90s. I wish I had this tool and the internet when starting college in the late 80s I probably would have skipped college all together. There was nothing like this back then so now kids and young adults have the world at their fingertips.
It is a great time to be alive especially for the young and young at heart. Me and Aaron are around the same age and I wished I took the path he did. I would be an animation god like he is but everyone has a path they take. I have learned and seen alot and I admire the work he and others have done.
Also I believe I saw it does have easing curves built in especially since a similar app that is already like this called "TOON SQUID" has it. Also Toon Squid is very similar to Procreate as well and it is $9.99.

Can Dreams use internal SSD drives like the video editing iPad app LumaFusion does?
LumaFusion is not an animation app of course - however its seamless SSD compatibility is excellent. Both your files and thin project itself can live in the external drive. So nothing touches your iPad storage limits.
In my case I have a 2TB SSD plugged into my iPad power port, with all my video clips and projects on the SSD and LumaFusion treats those medias as if they were on the IPad.

I still prefer Blender's Grease pencil, having access to 3D and camera rotation is just amazing. Most of the features you talked about here, are already part of Grease pencil, I think the biggest selling point is the fact that it works on iPad, and how clean the UI is, since Blender is a 3d animation software by default the UI is filled with options.

In ps select by colour means colour picking one colour and everything in that colour is selected (adjustable with feathering). You can also select the distance from the selected point where this effect reaches and that makes the tool super flexible for all kinds of editing tricks. I still edit most of my paintings in ps and that feature is one of the biggest reasons why I don’t do it in procreate. Ios PS doesn’t have select by colour yet either so I’m doing it on my PC.
Hi Mikko! Thanks for the video! Will it be worthy to buy the newest ipad to use procreate dreams? I have this doubt cause before it wasnt a big thing upgrading the ipad model because there was no resonable changes.
There’s no big difference between M1 and M2 based on the performance tests done by other channels. I’d definitely wait for reviews before making any decisions. It’s also really important to know that currently the storage space on your device has a bigger impact on the ram than what chip is on the device. There’s only 2 versions of ram on each generation and the 16g version is limited to higher storage space models. If the the new ipad has a bigger screen then I’ll definitely buy it because it would make my hand look smaller in these videos but there’s no other reason why I would switch from the m1 version at this point.

Im wondering, now that we can move stuff outside the canvas and back in again, and are encouraged to move parts of the drawing with the perform feature in dreams, will it still pixelate as much as it does now? Whenever I draw I try to not move the final parts of the image on the canvas, to prevent it from pixelating or blurring. Did they finally find a way to minimize this from happening?
This doesn’t sound like a common thing because I haven’t encountered it myself. Have you brought it up on procreate feedback forums?
No one has shown if there’s a LAYER limit at all. Yes we can create 1m x 1m canvas sizes but how many LAYERS can be made at that size. How many layers can be made in standard hd animation sizes. I don’t very much care about a single 1m x 1 m layer(hella impressive though) but I need to now if there’s still a LAYER LIMIT and how intrusive it will be
Same thought. There's no clear answer if there's layer limit. I hope the bucket tool improves too where we can have two modes were the color won't flood the lines instead of keep using the "reference" button.
All of the finished projects were absolutely packed with layers in almost every single timeline clip. I’m sure there has to be a point somewhere where iPad ram won’t just be able to take it but based on what I saw in the finished projects it’s a ceiling way off in the distance. I mean there were entire live footage movies in some projects. So those layers can hold more than big images they can hold actual footage.

Curves is a colour adjustment tool. What I meant by animation is to animate the nodes placed on gamma and colour channels.
Is there a compatibility of some sort? I mean Procreate Dreams should work on iPad Air 4 for example not only on the Pro or the newest M1 chips?
I asked procreate directly on Instagram they said that it will be available for a wide variety of iPads not just iPad Pro, thankfully.

I've never used IOS before and only thinking about getting one for procreate dreams, so forgive me if this is a stupid question.
But does dreams getting "icloud support" mean I can get by fine using dreams with an ipad of low storage capacity?
I'm very limited on funds, but I wanted to get at least a M1 processor. But the only ipad with that that I can afford is ipad air with 64GB and I'm worried its gonna be hell trying to animate with that low a storage space. (I've never animated before either so I don't know how much space animation project files take up compared to normal illustration files)
Also, if icloud support doesn't fix this issue at all, am I better off just sacrificing processor for bigger storage capacity on a lesser ipad if animation is my goal?
Since you can always offload data to any storage device it’s not the storage that you need to worry about. Usb - c works with most external storage devices.
However all iPads including M1 & 2s are divided into only 2 categories of how much RAM they have. 8 to 16gb so depending on how much storage the model has determines ram onboard that system.
This affects their performance only when it comes to very large canvas sizes with lots of layers. As such it’s a limitation that is possible to work around. I have procreate animations done on my iPhone that have 100+ layers.
Dreams having an insanely high ceiling for the canvas sizes absolutely means that it will be more efficient with smaller canvas sizes as well. Nobody needs 1m x 1m size canvases right now. While it’s cool that it’s a possibility
, don’t expect most people to go to such extremes with normal projects.

Will Procreate update also allow not to cut illustration outside the canvas? Or is it just for Procreate Dreams?
My understanding with the conversations I had with them was that it would be one of the features coming into Procreate at some point. That will be a bigger wait though because the support for those big canvas sizes and such needs to be built for the painting app first.

can you change keyboard shortcut in Dreams?
I didn’t even think of asking that but it looks like Dreams is designed touch controls first like Procreate. But because there’s more complexity in the entire UI it’s safe to assume there’s also going to be more customisation options.
@@angrymikko Hopefully, it will allow to customize keyboard shortcut since Dreams feel more like a full Animation/Video Editing Apps.
The touch controls are incredible and smooth but I feel like my left hand can do more work for a serious workflow.
