Commandos 2: Men of Courage is a definitive World War II real-time strategy and tactics game released by Eidos Interactive and Pyro Studios, and it is probably my favourite PC game of all time. Some of the missions in the game were inspired by famous WW2 movies. This is my full gameplay walkthrough with commentary of Level 8, Saving Private Smith, which can serve as a guide for how to successfully complete the level. It also includes my method of setting a trap for the enemy invasion and ambush at the end, which you can trigger by finding all the bonus books. The last bonus book is the hardest to track down, and you need to find the blowtorch to get it!
Level Plot: Following their tour of duty in the Pacific, the commandos are recalled to the Western Front for the Normandy invasion. During the battle of Cherbourg, Jack O'Hara, Thomas Hancock, Sir Francis T Woolridge and Paul Toledo rescue a wounded Private Smith, and with the help of American soldiers, successfully defend the town from waves of German infantry and Panzer III tanks.
The game sees players taking control of a squad of commandos (Green Beret, Sniper, Diver, Sapper, Driver, Spy, Thief, and Natasha) along with various allied units, as they sneak behind enemy lines to accomplish various missions in World War II, between 1941 and 1944, that will help them to thwart the war efforts of the Germans and the Japanese. The game also has an incredible music soundtrack by Mateo Pascual.
This is the original release of the game, currently available on Steam. I will also be reviewing the 2020 HD remaster soon.

This is the first time I saw a gamer being genuinely under total pressure. Great work man, love your videos.
Love how the thief has to roundhouse kick to knock out.
If you cut through the wires at the beginning there is a way around the mines (once you figure out where they are lol) and under water inside the plane there is a box with a gun. I love this mission.
Wow this was one of my favourite games when I was a kid, It randomly came across my mind last night and now it's seven am and I've been binge watching your videos for the past six hours.

The mouse is so underrated
Regarding the tank: when GB says, "We'll have to use the enemy equipment," he's actually referring to the wire-cutters carried by the mechanic who is tending to the wreck. You can find several sets throughout the level though, so I'm not entirely sure why he mentions that one specifically.
Couple of other tips for you: you can change the facing of commandos on overwatch or allied soldiers by holding control and right-clicking. Youc can also use ALT to pan the camera, which is good when you need to scroll quickly. Also, if you're in a mission with allied soldiers who have their own rifles, swap them out for German rifles. Allied soldiers don't need ammo, so you can give the infinite ammo rifles to your commandos. Same with pistols, too: you can use it to get an allied pistol for the Thief by giving one of the soldiers a German pistol. It's only really useful on a couple of missions but it does help.

I'm here coz I stuck at the last part defending town centre not realizing there were so many mines!
BTW, you can use F10 to highlight the furniture, boxes and doors etc, also F11 to highlight enemies.
Regarding the assault
1- setup 2 kill zones, one with mines along the big bridge, the other with men inside any house but far from windows, i.e your Green Beret position, and let them come to you, eventually they'll decrease in numbers and you can finish them with rocket launcher
P.s use F7 or 8 to highlight the interactive parts in any map

After four (4) days of trying different defensive positions, I finally completed this mission today.
The instructions are as follows :-
1. Set mines as shown.
2. Set one anti-tank mine each on the paths of emergence of the tanks.
3. Set one blue bomb each at the town centre, in the middle of the stone bridge, and on the far edge of the stone bridge (towards the ruins).
4. Equip infinite ammo rifles to your four (4) commandoes.
5. Equip a Bazooka to the Sapper (just in case).
6. Order all the allied soldiers to go in the bunker in the big house.
7. Position at least two (2) of them overlooking the ladder, rest are neither necessary, nor plausible to do the same.
8. Position the Green Beret with an MP40 towards the ladder. (switch weapons to the rifle when his ammo eventually runs out)
9. Commence the enemy's counter-attack.
10. Use the Sapper to look outside the gap at the back and detonate bombs appropriately.
11. Move the Thief out of that very gap and cover the area. (the goal is to kill 1-2 enemies and go back quickly).
12. Many attracted enemies will come running to see the bodies, which you can kill in groups of 3-4 with grenades of the Sapper.
13. After all the enemies at the other side of the bridge are eliminated, take the sniper and sapper out of the bunker, and to the topmost sniper position.
14. Use the sapper to cover the ladder, and use the sniper's sniper rifle to shoot all visible enemies. (after 2 kills, they will go prone and crawl in the centre of the town, giving you more time to pick them off :) )
15. One grenadier/sniper may remain at the furthest sandbag checkpost, but it doesn't matter. Take the sniper and the sapper to the ground floor of the house.
16. If, like me, you are unlucky, a tank would have magically made it accross the bridge - but look towards the brighter side of things, it has stopped right in front of a window! Position your sniper to cover the door, and use the sapper's rocket launcher to get rid of the tank. (You can also try to sneak up to the tank and plant a remote explosive, if you are brave enough).
That is it ; Mission Accomplished !

One more thing, you will get one (1) anti-tank mine in the level normally, but you have two detect and dig up two (2) of them from the front of the wrecked vehicle near the forest, across the town.
Also, I dropped the sapper's mine detector after setting just ten (10) mines which I had gotten beforehand (spoiler : it was a bad idea). I then had to look through every enemy body and every box on the map, but to no avail. I finally found it in the inventory of the anti-tank soldier (the one who was with Pvt. Smith). I had instinctively transferred it when I was taking ammo from his Bazooka.

I have a different tatics to defeat the tanks. Just put ALL the crew inside the bunker, pointing guns to the ladder, except the sapper. He Will be over the church (no one can see him there). Set the mines at the Doors of the house and throw grenades and rockets at the troops. Set the explosives at the bridge separatelly. You Will destroy the tanks, and nobody Will touch you.

Thanks, man! The HD version has an error on this level. After destroying the tanks I had to also kill the invaders. Without your plan it would have been impossible.
This lvl has many errors on PS4 edition.
1- the sapper doesnt have the metal detector.
2. You can only go upwards on the church ladder to reach the top Floor, but never go down anymore.
So no mines to place Here for the ps4/ ps5 Guys ! 😅

There are 2 anti-tank mines buried next to the demolished armored car. You can mine it out using the detector.

@@SteveRamsdenTH-cam Same, just completed the mission on HD remastered and diffused all the mines, but couldn't see the anti-tank mines there.
I think F9 and F10 is the hotkey to highlight furniture + boxes and enemies and in the HD remaster, they've added Sniper's Springfield variant.

Question: How do you switch into a different display? i.e. from Thief inside the church to Sniper outside.
I use the number keys (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 for all the commandos, 1 is Green Beret, 2 is sniper, etc), or you can click something that shows them all at the top... but I can't remember what!

Love this game, huge nostalgia. i just bought the remastered version but i don't like it that much, it has a lot of bugs. The original version is better in my opinion.

Did you know that the Green Beret and Thief can swing along the telephone wires between the buildings? It's perfectly safe (no soldiers ever look up) and it provides a very quick way into the second house (the one with the Sapper in it). You've completed the mission - and your methods always work perfectly well - but I wondered if you knew?

I got the bonus as you said from plane as well, but I clicked for radio, my mission was completed. I did not get to play all those mine finding and implanting. How did you do it?
Did you check the bonus icon to see if you had missed any others? Perhaps there was one still missing from somewhere else

Do you lose if private smith dies or any of the allied soldiers ? I destroyed all tanks and killed all soldiers but its not ending the mission.
It ends if Smith dies, but not the other soldiers I think

You made it too much complicated by finding and placing mines...
Just use your allied soldiers in radio house and use their weapons...
Place tank explosives near bridge... That's it...
No need to find and place extra mines anywhere
