  • @NeedyChris

    I feel like the free Harbor ability is extremely underrated. Its actually amazing when you play on archipelago map and start taking other cities because all your territory is instantly connected. This way you dont ever have to waste production to build Harbors which require quite a bit of production and you never have to build roads obviously. You can earn tons of gold, save a lot of production and focus more on building naval units to take more cities. To sum it up, playing with Carthage was one of my easiest Deity games xD

    • @JumboPixel
      @JumboPixel  3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      On an archipelago, it's decent! however if there's even one of your other cities on the same continent you'll inevitably need roads too for land troop movements and trade.

    • @jakubmalinowski1474
      @jakubmalinowski1474 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Still for me its better having free harbour than literal downgrade of workshop as Iroqouis with their longhouse. Mohawk is very similar to war elephant, but his strength isnt increased even without iron. Dido at least shines on Archipelago, Iroquois shines nowhere.

  • @keith3278

    I will not deny Dido is Bad ! , , , however I'll go out on a limb and say situational as it is, Carthage can use their mountain bonus "defensively".
    How: By being able to build roads tiles on top of otherwise inconvenient mountain tiles thus shorting the road length.
    Usefulness in descending order.
    1: Lessened maintenance cost. (Likely only 1 - 3 tiles though it adds up.)
    2: Lessened overall Repair time. (Context: Total of pillagible segments.)
    3: Lessened pillaging risk. (Protecting City connection gold income for the inland.)
    4: (Rarely) Shorter travel distance, for faster reinforcement. (Player might turn the tide with an extra action.)
    Now critique this to your hearts content.

    • @JumboPixel
      @JumboPixel  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Im not familiar with this - how does the worker survive long enough on the tile to complete the road? Does it only take one turn to build a road on a mountain?

    Carthage may be bad but it is definitely not the worst civ in the game. None of their bonuses are detrimental (i.e. even if you get zero value out of them none of the bonuses are worse than not having them).
    Iroquois is the worst civ in the game. First, because the Mohawk warriors are irrelevant (you don't build swordsmen you build composite and crossbows with a few horsemen to take cities). Even if you wanted melee you'd probably be rushing techs that would lead you to Pikeman (and the freshwater food bonus) instead of Swordsmen. Their bonus is good but not quite as good as advertised because forests are not as good as roads at transporting units since you actually lose extra movement everytime you enter the forest (not to mention you may need to clear forests to get to luxuries/strategic resources or not have forests where you need them for city connections). The starting bias is good but has poor synergy with the civ bonus since you can't chop down the forests you spawn around or your loghouse will be weak and you'll lose mobility and city connections. Finally, the log house is such an awful workshop replacement that it actually makes the civ worse than playing a vanilla civ with no bonuses majority of the time. It can be good but you basically need a wide empire (which you may not have the luxuries for) and to rush your opponent with your wide empire before you fall too far behind in techs and hammers (which isn't reliable unless you're on a tiny pangaea map with an enemy civ that isn't a war civ also going wide).

    I actively still play civ v a ton (with friends and my partner) and I play Dido every time. With the right strategy, there’s no civ that is impossible. I like spitting out as many colonies as possible so the happiness from seaports with the right policies comes in handy as well as their quinqueremes being better early on. The African elephants are useful early game against barbarians with honor unlocked for movement and wiping them out for free culture. Not sure they’d hold up in a hard game without clever strategy but they frequently end up in the jungle and with science from jungle tiles, it typically becomes a good powerhouse of science midgame. 🤷🏻‍♀️

    • @keith3278
      @keith3278 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Guess I'll take on the role of devils advocate for Japan.
      The Fishing Boat portion of their ability does slightly help with border expansion. Because even a JP city with access to only a single Fishing Boat tile can still culturally expand its borders at the same rate as another city that has either its Monument + (An Amphitheater / Liberty opener / or a +1 Culture from x pantheon tile.)
      Save for the City Monument, this frees up that cities production queue from either "a hammer expensive Amphitheater" or a "gold intensive land purchase" that would serve anger the neighboring Civ even more then just the Cities outright existence; Ultimately giving more time to prepare the cities defensibility.

    Nice video. While I don’t disagree with Carthage’s limitations as set forth here I have a question on Tier Lists in general and specifically Civ V vs. Civ VI.
    In Civ VI I feel like tier lists are for fun and give us all something to argue about. If you’re a good player I believe you can beat the AI on Deity with any Civ and that the Civ specific units and abilities, while nice, don’t really matter. My question is (assuming my statement is true about Civ VI), with regard to Civ V does it matter more or is a good player less dependent on which Civ. I see Civs like Poland and Babylon in Civ V as more relatively powerful than anything I see in Civ VI. Still, I wonder if you just ignore a Civs uniques and just build a 4 city Tradition empire and go for a science victory will it matter.

  • @romkobomko3200

  • @vulkunne1542
    @vulkunne1542 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Completely disagree unless it's a map with no useful coast. Carthage is a master of the early game however you have to play according to their strengths. Keep LOS up on all their coastal cities and watch the wealth steam roll thru. War Elephants are great land defense and powerful mobile unit.
    Seriously Carthage can be ridiculously op in the early game and hold on to that power for longer if you setup everything right in the early game and no one takes you down or anything like that.

  • @jakubmalinowski1474
    @jakubmalinowski1474 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Carthage isnt bad on slower game phases where you can use units more efficiently for longer time. Surely, you are forced to spend more time training the units, but quintriemes are very solid early game and basically only beatable by byzantines dromones. But still, caught offguard civ with great lighthouse in the city in first 150 turns is almost insta win for me, even on immortal/deity dificulty.

      - city connection is lost outside of borders and over rivers, so i ended up building roads anyway so i can move my army quickly
      - forests are more useful for early settlers/wonders etc. the longhouse bonus comes too late and isn't enough to offset the early disadvantage if you keep them around.

Also few city states so there is plenty of space to spread out.
