Hello, I really enjoy your videos. I live in The City of Norton Va. and have crossed Black Mountain several times to visit Lynch Ky. on my way to Harlan Ky. Many of the old cement buildings in Lynch are coal company buildings. The old houses across from the school look like coal company" houses. Bigger houses like in your vid were for the bosses to live in, the actual miners lived in small little cabins (4 or 6 rooms depending on the size of the coal miner:s family).that for the most part were poorly build and didn't last too long. The second mine you showed is definitely an old coal mine. In these hills that is what you call "low"coal. From the time you went in to the time you come out at night you had to crawl and dig by hand or use special machines designed for working in"low" coal. In Lynch or maybe in Benham Ky., there is an old building with "Colored School" carved in the stone above the door. Very cool. Be careful.

its a shame that they just leave buildings like that to crumble to the ground. they should restore them into something or tear it down.

    • @radicalraccoon

I live the next county over but basically the mines are almost gone in this area. No money who can afford to do anything with it. Unless someone converted it into a home its prob not going to get used and the city cant afford to tear it down. They don't even have a local police dept anymore.

I grew up in Lynch, KY and my mother (class of 1967) still lives on the street ( EAst Main Street). A little history about the school for you. It was built by Italian stone masons from MIlan , Italy, that US Coal and Coke Company recruited to build the town. The entire town was a company owned town until the 60s. The school was all white until desegregation laws passed in the early 60s. There were 4 Class "A " ( smallest school size in the state ) state football championship teams from this school in the 60s. Their nickname was the Golden Bulldogs. The first graduating class was 1924 and the last was 1981. The school was maintained by the US Steel Coal Company . These are 2 different buildings. The small one is the grade school and the larger one was the high school . The students received top notch educations here. US Steel recruited the best teachers in the state for these kids. Most of the boys went to work in the mines after graduating and married their high school sweethearts and lived in the town . The little creek behind the school is called Looney Creek . Why? I have no idea. There is a lot of history to this school, with academics, sports, music, etc . It was the pride of the town of Lynch . If you have any questions for me just ask and if you type in Lynch KY you can see more videos about the town. Thank you.

Shame you didn't drive down the road about two miles and film the old "Colored School". And yes those are the words on the building.
