I went with high power DS18 6.5s in my Trans Am running off a separate 4cha amp and absolutely loved it! Had a lot of bass from the pair of 12s but the speakers were very capable and were not overpowered by the subs at all
I used the factory dash pieces and hid blue leds behind it so the double din has a nice blue glow around it. Did the same with all the speaker grills. I used kenwood mids n highs with 4 channel amp and 4 L7 8s subwoofers. Turned out decent but wish I would have went with a single solo x 15.
Great radio install.. I like the Metra audio stuff, decent quality and almost anything to adapt factory to aftermarket audio!! Always worked great for my needs, and the speaker wire adapter are a must!!!✌🏻
I ran my power wire under my Camaro when I was young and not so wise. I had 5% windows, headlight taillight and fog light covers and ripped my power wire out on a dead black dog in pitch black and rain. Easy enough on Camaros to go down the driver side with signal and go through the antenna grommet with the power wire. If you like the baffles and foam, you definitely wanna check out Stinger brand Fast Rings. One final note. Since subwoofer signal is mono instead of stereo, a lot of aftermarket companys are moving to a single subwoofer output rca. Just run the left one into the Pioneer as well as your amp and you should be fine.
I bought the NVX 6.5 components for my Trans Am, I couldn’t figure out a good way to install the tweeters without hacking my door panels since their mounted separately. What I will say is this brand is packaged very nicely and appears to have pride in the quality
Nice job! I have the Pioneer 8500 double din with the steering wheel controls and video bypass as well and everything works perfect. I can use it with my iPhone and mirror the phone on the screen. And I’ve had a MTX amplified sub made to fit perfectly in the driver side cubby where my factory CD changer used to be. It’s probably been in there for 18 plus years lol
The Metra bezels are hit or miss. I found the Screaming Chicken Bezels to be a little better; fits perfectly actually - just can't go above 6.8" screen without working the bezel. I did and made a 7" fit perfectly, but hours of using a dremel, file, sanding, etc. You go slow enough on it and there will not be any material added you'll just cut it down to the right size and clean your edges a bit. For the Metra though, since you have it, you can spray textured paint on the bezel to give it a texture - will feel factory and minorly "sandy". SEM Makes a Color Coat Spray that is a dead match for 97-99 cars with Grey interior it is SEM 17213 Very Dark Grey for interior panels (kick panels, sail panels, speaker panels). For A-Pillar panels and radio Bezel it is 17113 GMC 7701 Graphite. The sheen will be too flat, but hit it with SEM 1K HS Semi Gloss clear and it will 100% look like a factory piece before you Armor All it which is perfect and means it appears factory and not too shiny. What the bezel color is on 00-02 cars I am not sure - it may be the same but I know the interior colors changed a bit. Done right, nobody will know. If there is a way to send you a picture of what mine looks like, let me know and I can do it. I was able to get this Joying Head Unit in and it sounds and works amazing - www.joyingauto.com/newest-ui-for-7-inch-double-din-android-10-0-car-stereo-with-hands-free-bluetooth.html My only complaint is I wish the screen were a tad brighter because I have a 98 car with Arctic White interior, you see the reflection of the white seats a little in daytime which is obviously less of a problem on Tan, Grey, or Ebony interiors.
The e-brake video lock can be tricked in these cars, just pull the e-brake up to the first click. It doesn't engage the e-brake (no added tension on the cable) but the e-brake light comes on and bypasses the video lock. It's probably not the preferred way but it's easy and free.
Or just hardwire it. If memory serves me right the wire just looks for a ground circuit so I always just put the parking brake wire of the radio to the ground wire so the radio always thinks its in park
Awesome video. I've wanted one of these since I was a kid and played Need for Speed. Considering buying one next summer and giving it a modern head unit. My main doubt here is, what's the visibility like? Considering how low the screen is, can you easily manipulate it when the car is moving?
Did you replace the rear speakers? Is there a separate amp channel for the back seat woofers, or is there just a crossover from the front channel or the rear channel?
Not bad, the gap is for sure annoying, does not look good, especially with the 2660 NEX from pioneer, I ran the usb to the center console with a cheap usb extension of amazon and put my Motorola MA1 in it for wireless android auto. In my '99 Z28 SS I have 3 pairs of JL c2 650's, a pair of c2 650x's and some c2 400x's. with a 13w7 in the trunk and it sounds amazing with or without T-Tops. Only unfortunate thing is the 99 does not have the steering wheel controls and I haven't gotten around to trying to replace the steering wheel to a new one with the radio controls. Believe we had a discussion on this before with the wheel, while you were in there did you see how difficult it would be to wire up a wheel with radio controls? Also replaced the factory radio antenna with a firestick antenna, had to machine out a few parts in the shop, but CB radio with AM/FM works well.
Can you talk about the clutch brake in. I just did a T56 swap in my 2002 CETA. ( same clutch that you are using ) Have about 300 miles of country driving on the car so far. Haven't goosed it yet. When do you think its safe to start getting on it??? Thanx.
I have missed opinions on brake in. We have about 50 miles on it and feels solid. Have done a few 75% pulls but no wot yet. Tuning at the same time so I think around 300 miles or so we will get a heavier foot.
Hey dude ! Today I just installed my double din car radio on my 2001 Camaro, and with the steering wheel control! After a few hours, everything works! I thank you very much!!! (you never know: I will want to reprogram the engine, but the computer is blocked... is there a solution? I am in France. Thank you in advance!)
Pioneer head units do not require video bypass that feature is accessible in a hidden function. The subwoofer uses a single out because there is a built in crossover as well as front out and rear out for crossovers for all and the ability to turn off the subwoofer. Should have used an idatalink maestro module instead of that junk you used could have Bluetooth programmed or computer programmed prior to even getting in car so it’s plug and play.
I wouldn't necessarily spend $100+ for a smart harness if the only feature I need from it is steering wheel controls. In this particular situation, and with that head unit, I think the ASWC-1 is perfectly adequate. Although I would say that, since these GM harnesses are so cheap, I would have bought a second to depin to keep from splicing into a factory wire. Also, new Pioneers do require the bypass. It's just that there's a secret menu to activate them such as on my DMH-C5500NEX
@@s10tacious if there is a secret menu as I stated as I can also attest to on my 8200NEX that lets you bypass then can you explain why you need the bypass module? And also yes $100 is expensive but it’s more then just volume buttons it also lets you assign whatever feature to whatever buttons you prefer as well as assign each button two functions and also on equipped vehicles it will integrate the factory xm tuner with aftermarket radio as well as integrate Onstar with the aftermarket radio and can even equip and integrate radar detectors within the system and also adds all kinds of vehicle info within the aftermarket radio such as gauges, speedo, it has a quarter mile timer, 0-60 timer it has the ability to read and clear DTC on vehicles equipped with tpms it will display it and more it displays more data then what you can get off of the dash and or dic if available the features and benefits are endless it equips with extra outputs for all kinds of aftermarket equipment it lets you customize so many different aspects and all of this is just being based off of my vehicle which I guess is close to becoming an antique as it’s an 09.
I bought the same radio controls as you did and did the exact same thing as you when getting it to pair and it blinked green and red after blinking only red. You cut the video and came back and said you fixed it. How did you fix it??
I put 4ohm alpines running off the stock monsoon amp and it sounds like complete crap! The stock sail speakers are only supposed to push out bass with the monsoon amp and when you use 4ohm coaxial speakers it sounds like its gonna explode.

Great install guys. 👌. Looking very. SWEET. Nice to see father & son build. Big hugs! For you guys for working together
Thank you. Definitely a better set up
Awesome job, Travis. That's a car any teenager would be proud to drive.
Thank you Kyle. Hopefully he appreciates its.
Looking Good Travis! Its ,so cool to see you guys restoring this and keeping the F-body alive, love the detail of the cleaning as well!
Thank you. Definitely getting closer
Hi Mr Travis. Awesome install. You're a JACK OF ALL TRADES.
now you have to stock up some tesa tape for electrical wiring. 👋👋👋
Thank you. I do need some of that tape.
Perfect timing, I’m about to put in a Kenwood Excelon double din radio and new speakers, so this video will come in handy.
Awesome. Good luck on yours

I do like that cubby sub placement
Awesome install! Was surprised not to see everything covered in Dynmat?
Thank you. Race car. Got to keep it light. Lol
I used the Bazooka sail speakers from Kee Audio in my monsoon TA and they sounded awesome
My friend used them and said they are great too
Great video as always I’m gonna have to try them speakers out
Thank you Daniel. I love them
I live in Ocala...big big shortage of car stereo repair install....only three in the town.

I will have to check out the screamin chicken option
I 've seen the same part number look good in one car and bad in another. The one in my 97 fit well, my buddys 99 fit like garbage. That sucks.
@weskirkland5850 that can be the case sometimes

It does work as ground on some older units.
Super helpful vdieo! Thanks so much for all the info including the wireharness with the steering harness adapter.

so you are able to install a new stereo and have the monsson system still work?
Yes
Did you list that speaker connector harness( for sail panels) part number?
Didn't end up using those
True motivation for all this is his mom wants a grand baby so they hooking up his sons ride lol.
Lol. NO
Did you replace the rear speakers? Is there a separate amp channel for the back seat woofers, or is there just a crossover from the front channel or the rear channel?
I did but if I remember they are on deck power I think
