The first time that I shot a 1911 was June, 1967. At that time, the Navy did not provide hearing protection and I did not like shooting it. I have a couple of them now and they are my favorite handguns.

The Charles Daly Field Grade 1911 is far superior from similar products at there same price point. I just added that exact one to my 1911 collection for $459.

My grandfather's Charles Daly is absolute dogshit, the barrel nearly blew up on me because of a squib round, and it jams far more than any other 1911 I've shot, do not buy.

I inherited a 1970s Charles Daly over under shotgun made in Japan. It is beautiful and shoots well, especially with Lead shells. Now I want this 1911. I fired thousands of rounds through a 1911 at the Special Forces Special Operations Tactics Course. We fought the change to the Beretta.

I purchased one recently at a farm store and it was a deal, $399. I had to do a few minor things to it like stretch the manual safety spring to have a better safety function. I tuned the flat main spring to give me a little better trigger and the magazine drops free now. I replaced the magazine catch with a Wilson Combat part and I bought two Wilson Combat magazines. I have put a hundred rounds through it with no malfunctions.

My father always taught me to rub gun oil all over the outside of the gun when I’m done cleaning it, wiping away the excess. Parkerized guns need a base layer of oil to keep them protected long term. It’s like seasoning a cast iron skillet.
When your finish sucks up a good bit of oil it will become extremely durable and rust resistant. Mine out of the box had a very subtle green tint to it (as I recall) and was very dull. I’ve had it for eight years now and it looks more like a dark slate color.

Saw your review and bought the pistol. But I should have taken your advice verbatum. You said, get the Field Grade. I gots the Superior Grade. Big mistake. So, what you said, I found to be true. The gun does shoot straight, is pretty accurate, enough for within 15 yards. The slide and barrel may be milled from a bar of steel, but the components like the ambi-safety are definitely cast, and they feel like fresh out of the mold, rough. The paddles are bigger then they need do be, and get in the way of a high grip. New to 1911's, but CZ etc experienced, but the safety gets in the way. The sights is why I bought the Superior Grade, which turns out the front sight does not act like a fiber optic. It's dark. Worse the a solid matt field grade. The rear sight has two fiber optic dots that shine in light, the front does not. Since they don't just sell front sights, now I have to buy a real fiber optic set, and sight the whole shabang in. Which defeats the purpose the Superior Grade. Otherwise, a quick 100 round session left a positive impression of the gun and .45ACP on this millimeter jocky. I's a keeper, with a few mods.
Next time, I follow your recommendations to the letter.

The Streamlight TLR 8 G is easily my most important customization decision for my full size handguns, it makes a huge difference with performance, to have a fighting handgun without it is like going outside in a snow storm without your jacket.

I’m lookin for a range gun primarily but I’m in the rock island/girsan/sds/Charles Daly. The Daly is $380 new and the others are all closer to $475 so about a hundred more for the other 3. Which one would you pick? I appreciate wisdom and would love some advice from folks who know more that me. Thank you, in advance

I'm way late, but I'd say to skip the Charles Daly. Mine had a rounded grip escutcheon/bushing and incorrectly tensioned extractor from the factory. FDE's every other shot. Not a mag or ammo issue since the R1 I fired alongside it was reliable with the same ammo and mags.

Probably ok for the money. I do not care for the Large Logo RollMark on the left side of the slide but of course that's just cosmetics. I think I would go for A Springfield Defender over this because of the improved sights and...made in 'Merica! Those used to go for similar money but currently who knows?? Nice review , as always!👍👍

I own an upgraded RIA 1911 because it was only $20 more than the standard version. The only “cons” I can name are - 1 The sheer weight of the weapon. I wouldn’t want to carry it. 2 - because of mild arthritis take down for me is a little difficult but not impossible with a 1911 takedown tool. Other than that I can’t say enough good about it.
