American's not understanding the fog light is a feature, I use it as an safe anti-tailgater option. It's a brake check without using your brakes.

I have often used my V50's rear fog light when it is raining and the spray is making it hard to see. Since my car is grey, it really helps the idiots behind me see my car. Oddly, I have not used it at all since retiring more than four years ago. And my dash display informed me that the rear fog light bulb had burned out. From boredom?

Plus my dad owned a S90 at the time, so the pre-2015 interior design actually carried a bit of nostalgia for me - and it still looks modern enough for my taste! If I have the money to waste on a little hatch just for fun, I probably would really want this...

looking to buy a 2nd car, and this 2009 C30 popped up, bit of km's but super clean, plan to see it tomorrow afternoon. so it was doing some research which brought up your video, thank you Aging Wheels! very enjoyable, subscribed. years ago moved (mistake) from a 240 wagon to a 2003 v70t awd, looked beautiful, lovely seats, had the seemless, but unexciting 2.4 turbo 5spd auto and the most horrid dead steering. it required 4 tows due to modules failing, traded within 10 months.
was to go test drive this 2009 C30, hmmm maybe this post has me rethinking.

  • @scottrobb8934
    @scottrobb8934 3 ปีที่แล้ว +34

Robert, I'm glad that you bought a C30. I'm 64 and retired, and have always liked Volvos. The C30 is the spiritual ancestor of the 1970's1800ES, reputedly called a "shooting brake" since it looks like a sleek two-door wagon. I think C30s are adorable and would have one along with a C70 if I could. In case you did not know, Volvo also made a transverse six cylinder engine for the larger vehicles, and a T6 came with TWIN K4 turbos. In 2014, I was driving a 1990 Australian-built Capri XR2 we had bought in 2000 with 84,000 miles on it, when my wife had said to me, "I'd feel much better if you drove something from THIS century." So, a search began. I always wanted a V70 but they were too expensive and of course to get the six-speed manual, an "R" is required. My search led eventually to a super-rare 2005 V50 T5 Sport with the M66 manual transmission. Which I absolutely LOVE! It is slightly longer than the C30, and much lighter than the V70, with the same T5 engine. The "Sport" model sits one inch lower, has stiffer suspension and a couple other things. Interestingly, the intake noise is clearly audible in mine. I toyed with the idea of a cat-back exhaust, but never did it. The torque "curve" is quite flat in our engines: 236 lb-ft from 1,400 to 4,800 RPM. Since the K4 spools so quickly, my car can lay 30 or more feet of rubber easily. Something I have done once to impress the grandsons in the car. My daughter was in my wife's car behind us, and when I glanced in the mirror, she was laughing, my wife was shaking her head but smiling. Oh, when your car needs tires, by Pirellis. They TRANSFORMED my cars handling and braking. If there was a way to add a photo, I would do so, of my car parked next to a C30. I LOVE your videos and find your humor and wit endearing. "This doesn't mean we will be swapping spit in the showers," however.

NEVER have i loved a car more..!!! Had it for 10yrs and other than disc's, pads, tyres, it cost us no more than a steering rack and sailed thru it's MOT's everytime...
Was quick enuf to overtake and keep the speed up, but SO MUCH more comfortable than my Scooby on long journeys...
Could not fault it... I'd have another one in an instant, despite loving the pop's n bangs of a Scooby, Skyline, RS, etc.....

I am *so jealous* of the quick headlight removal. My Hyundai Accent has almost no access to change headlight/blinker/parking light bulbs. I think the dealership changes bulbs by first removing the front bumper bar! Yes, that is the factory recommended way!! Strangely, the rear lights are (mostly) as easy as pie to remove for bulb replacement.

This car shares the platform with many others: Volvo C30, S40, V50, C70 ... Ford Focus, Kuga ... Mazda 3
When loocking for suspension tuning parts you may be more successful when e.g. search for Mazda 3 of that "vintage".
You wouldn't believe what some select poly bushes and wheel spacers do for the handling of this platform. It still is hydraulic power steering!
I drove a 2011 S40 T5 AWD for 9 years and did all kinds of stuff to it ... I recommend the following treatment to fix the driving engagement complaint:
    Basics:
    - lower the car! but be carefull: the factory front struts don't like lowering at all. They bottom out and thus loose all the damping within some months or a year. I've had very good results with Koni Special Active Dampers 8745-1110L and 8745-1110R ... they held together the last 2 years until I got rid of the car, ride perfectly acceptable over small bumps but firm up on slower movements like weight transfer in corners (exactly the other way aroung to normal dampers). Before I drove Bilstein B8 ... on this platform they are unbearably stiff and in the end give you less traction on real-world shitty roads due to their stiffness.
    - widen the track: Either use some 10-15mm/side wheel spacers with the stock wheels or look for some wheels with less ET. Volvo decided to go with crazy high ET (51,5mm if I remember right) ... this creates a tiny scrub radius and thus makes the steering unnecessaryly light und uncommunicative. I've driven 18x8 ET40 wheels plus 10mm spacers (to clear the Porsche brake calipers) and I really needed to convince the car to change lane opposed to stock where giving too much input was way too easy.
    - change the engine torque mount to a stiffer one! The Elevate one worked for me and is definately an improvement.
    Rear axle:
    - 2 sets of Whiteline KCA394 or Powerflex PFR19-810G to set the rear axle camber to about 1 degree ... this does magic to this platform ... any type of lowering springs, including (!) Volvos own R-Design, increase the camber in rear. That just makes it unbearably understeery ... the mentions bushing allow you to fix that! Don't go too low on the camber, or the DSTC will intervene if your turning radius gets too smal for your steering wheel input. At 0.5 degrees of camber my S40 ABS block rattly ended the fun when trail-braking the highway exit at 10km/h lower than what the car was capable off. Increasing to 1 degree rear camber fixed that I and could happily take my Autobahn exit at 80km/h again where 40km/h where allowed.
    - Whiteline W63320 or Powerflex PFR19-811 bushing for the dog bone control arm ... these arms are responsible for holding the track of the rear wheels. They are alyways under tension and their bushing get twisted quite a lot due to the arm being short. That's why they are worn in almost all cars on this platform at this age, as long as they didn't get replaces in the last 2 years.
    - Elevate rear sway bar. The factory anti-sway-bar setup is just too safe and comfortable.
    Front axle:
    - Whiteline KCA428 or Powerflex PFF19-1002G give you more caster, which increases the centering forces and road feeback. Together with the increased scrub radius due to the wheel spacers makes the speering stiff enough that you can actually feel the cornering radius by the applied force rather than only by the angle
    - when lowering the car you should really mount the steering rack high to prevent bump steer. There is akit from Whiteline (KCA405) ... but
    Engine:
    - stick with the K04-Turbo! I've driven K16 for 6 of the 9 years and found it to be way too laggy. The bigger turbo needs bigger injectors and bigger fuel pump. And that's where the trouble starts. I could write an essay about the bodge jobs in the ME9 of this Volvo Platform we tackled with our tuner. I just recommend you: DON'T! ... The car drives really nice with a squeezed out K04, especially if your goal is having fun in the corners. It is possible to extract 300hp from it with about 350lb-ft of torque. Sticking with the K04 and the stock injectors keeps the bodge jobs in the ECU hold together
    - replace the tiny stock intercooler ... this thing is an abomination!
    - replace the downpipe/cat with high-flow stuff. The rest of the exhaust system is obligatory.
    - only drive the tuning intercooler and high-flow-cat with a tune! The Bosch ME9 (especially in Volvos buggy adaptation) doesn't like the boost increasing too fast. Without a proper (!!!) tune you'll get wavy torque curve, laggy throttle response and even cutting out cruise control.
The nice thing: should you still feel the need for the K16 turbo, it is 80% drop-in. The downpipe flange and its position is fully compatible (so the downpipe fits both ... that's how we got our cars through TÜV), the intake pipe just needs a different silicon joiner (intake on K16 is a couple of millimeter bigger), the boost exit on the compressor housing is exactly the same and at the same place and the water lines fit without any changes. Just the oil hardlines don't fit and either need the original Focus MkII RS oil hard-lines (which are expensive for what they are) or some flexible lines instead.

Many years ago I owned a 1980 Chevy Citation X11. That was a fun hatchback. Very quiet and comfortable too. Also wasn't fast, but was quick. It only produced about 160hp, but it was a very light car. And no 1967 Corvete sideways radio standard with the Citation either. I built a custom radio bracket for the back of the shifter, so your hand was always there to hit the FF button or change the station. That was one of my favorite cars.

As an owner of several volvos, I can assure you that all these cars (all P1-P3 volvos) are setup for torques not revs.
As for the exhaust system I recommend, having played with many exhaust setups on T5 and T6 volvos that I own, I found Borla rear mufflers sound the best in my opinion, though they cost a decent premium. The rear mufflers I suggest are the Pro XS offset as they aren’t as loud inside the cabin but can be loud outside, if you can fit it and afford it, best of the best I found is Boomer Thumper series, problem with boomers are that they can resinate back into the cabin when they get hot as they get louder the hotter they get but they sound incredible! As for center muffler/resonator, that is down to personal taste and what you plan on doing with down pipe changes and what not, keeping the stock resonator will mean you won’t get any cabin drone but also means it won’t have any sparkle of fun like no crackles and pops.
For center muffler what I enjoy the most and yes but of a borla fan, but it comes from my personal experience: personally even though it’s way overly expensive has found for T6 engines (not tested this on T5’s yet) is to use borla dual in and out X pipe center exhaust then route that down to dual inlet/single outlet muffler, then have that go over 2.5/3.0 inch pipe to rear borla mufflers.. this gives you the best of both worlds in my experience, when cruising at normal pace and RPM the cabin is fairly quiet and isolated while still exterior exhaust sound letting others know you got a modified Volvo.. but when you get on it, it will sing, scream, crackle and pop…

Piece of advice, check your front sunroof drains in the A pillars. They have a tendency to pull out of the front firewall and dump water into the footwells. I didn't find this out until I got into the back seat and the carpet squished.
Also, you can go a lot farther than a turbo upgrade. There are a few people that have done an all wheel drive upgrade. The rear subframe is the same as a couple other models of that era that offered AWD. I'd say do both, mostly because I can't imagine it happening to my C30 outside of my dreams.
I still love my 2011 C30 even with the minor hail damage.
