College football predates professional football by over 50 years in the US. It’s the closest thing we have to European football culture. Our college football allegiances are fiercely territorial, tribal, and generational. It’s truly one of the most special parts of American culture in my opinion

Very true. American football developed from inter-collegiate competition long before professional football (the NFL) was founded. Probably the only European collegiate rivalry I can think of is Oxford vs. Cambridge in rowing, although there may be others. But scholastic and collegiate sports in the USA has been a part of the culture for almost two centuries. It is unfortunately becoming more professional, but the players are still students as are members of the marching bands.

College football 1869. Professional Football 1901. To expand on this edit: Although the first college football game was in 1869, the rules were loosely based on soccer and devolved into soccer with blocking. The rules of American Football were eventually created in 1876 using the Rugby Football Union rules as its basis. The first professional league, The Ohio League, was established in 1901. When this league collapsed in 1919 due to World War I and the worldwide Influenza Epidemic, the NFL was created in 1920 to take its place.

The marching bands are all students. They are constantly learning new formations and music, which takes a lot of time. Along with that, they carry a full college course load. The dedication required is unbelievable.
In the US, high school football is also insane. People gather before the game and tailgate - they bring food and hang out with other families. Actually, tailgating is very common before all sporting events - professional or local school sports. It is part of the experience and a lot of fun.

Every College or University has its own song, colors (for example crimson and gold), mascot, etc. Stadiums are the size they are because you have current students attending the game, plus alumni that goes back generations. It is tradition in some families that you will only attend a certain university because that is where your parents attended, or even grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins... I graduated from University of Michigan in 1971! They have the largest football stadium in the US, won the National Championship in 2023 ( the final game was January 8, 2024,) only team to have won over 1,000 games, and their fight song, The Victors, is almost always ranked the best. The players get scholarships; the marching bands are music students. Because there are so many alumni from each University, plus students, family members, the fan bases are huge. Because TV makes so much money off viewers, the next few years will need some new rules about now paying players! That is new and not fair to smaller schools who don’t have the huge alumni base who donate to the University. The last scene you saw that said Go Blue is Michigan whose colors are maize and blue. Maize is a name for yellow corn.

College football in America is way more fun to watch than pro football. The energy is contagious - school fight songs, cheer leaders, marching bands, and great young athletes. Keep in mind, that the best players in college, are hoping to be picked to sign with a professional NFL team. That is when they get the big money. College football us considered an amateur sport. The players make no salary and have to meet certain standards academically. Of course, they are treated well by their school. A great winning team is an excellent recruiting tool for the university, to get more students enrolled.

Sports are a big deal. depending on where you are, the biggest sport will be football, basketball, or baseball.
    Now for some specifics...
1:50 Most schools with big sports programs have marching bands. They are also students and can receive scholarships or tuition waivers for participating.
2:20 Most schools have mascots. This native American represents the Seminoles - a tribe native to Florida and the mascot of Florida State University.
3:05 The Irish flag represents the "Fighting Irish" - the mascot of the opposing team (University of Notre Dame). You may notice they were boo'd when they came out.
4:47 Many colleges have their own Alma Mater songs, and some have a separate fight song.
6:41 Most stadiums are open, even for professional football. It takes some VERY severe weather to cancel a football game. They play in heat, rain, snow, and wind. Severe weather games might be a good video to look up!
6:52 They are students, but are often quite popular, socially. College players are not allowed to receive money or gifts directly, but typically do get scholarships that cover tuition, housing, and food. They are required to take classes and maintain good grades, and can only play for four years.
7:20 School spirit is a big thing in American schools, and helps to form a sense of community. Even years later, alumni will acknowledge each other, even if they never met before. High profile sport programs also help draw more students to the University.
8:03 Players change every year as students graduate and new students join. That annual change is simply part of the game, and recruiting becomes really important.
9:10 That is a loaded question! There are a 134 schools in the top tier, and there are many, many more in lesser divisions. The system of "who is the best" gets fairly convoluted. Some of the better-known programs are Notre Dame, Michigan, USC, Clemson, Penn State, Alabama, Georgia, Florida State, and I'm sure there will be a lot of hate comments below adding more!
11:37 Many teams have small hand towels tucked into their belts.
Just an additional note: the largest football stadium in the US for a professions (NFL) team is ranked #15 in the largest stadiums in the US - #1 through 14 are university stadiums! Here are the top five...
    1) Michigan Stadium, University of Michigan, capacity: 107,601
    2) Beaver Stadium, Penn State University, capacity: 106,572
    3) Ohio Stadium, Ohio State University, capacity: 102,780
    4) Kyle Field, Texas A&M University, capacity: 102,733
    5) Tiger Stadium, Louisiana State University, 102,321
    Capacity doesn't go below 100,000 until #9.

Good response, except one update-players at the highest divisions of college are now getting paid. A few stars will make close to $1million per year, although most are making less than $100,000. This is a new development in the past few years, and time will tell how it affects player attitudes and celebrity status. There are some players, especially in basketball, who will make more per year in college than they will likely make in the professional leagues. College players only have 4 years of eligibility (with a few minor caveats), so they cannot stay in college forever.

College level football is a HUGE thing at major universities, particularly, but not exclusively in the southern states. The marching bands are also comprised of students. College life in the USA is much more than just academics, but also extend to social opportunities through travel and student organizations. Many students live in dorms, or in einim "Studentenheim, " which is not so common in Germany I believe. Once students graduate and start their careers, people often become part of alumni associations, and support their "Alma Mater" through financial gifts and attend sporting events, especially football. It is a very American cultural phenomenon.

You should definitely check out videos by The Ohio State University Marching Band, they're world famous for their halftime performances. Most reactors start with the "Hollywood Blockbusters" show.

College football is older than the NFL which is why the fanbases are so large and loyal. There are not NFL teams in all US states, but every state has at least 1 or 2 large colleges. Most of the largest stadiums in the world belong to American college football teams.
The very first clip showed the Corps of Cadets, not the marching band. Cadets are a military corps that can lead to officer commissioning in the actual armed services but don't necessarily. There are a few colleges that have these longstanding military traditions. This is a different thing to ROTC (the commissioning process at all American colleges) or the actual designated military colleges (West Point, Annapolis, or the Air Force Academy).
You're going to get fireworks at most US sporting events.
Marching bands, cheerleaders, and the football players are all students and they've been doing this on top of normal coursework since they were in middle or high school.

The first game was the Florida State Seminoles vs the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Pretty much every school has its own Fight Song. The bands at these big schools are 300-500 students who rehearse up to 20 hours a week and usually start practicing weeks before the first game. Some are competitive turning away as many students as they take. I went to Arizona State (ASU) whose band is around 350 plus twirlers, flag corps, etc. and for the band's 100th anniversary year we had a Homecoming band of over 900 including alumni and current students. Your college team is important you have great loyalty to the school you went to -- and if you didn't then often to the local school where you live. The Universities in this video are very large, like 50,000 students and more.

130 players because they need to develop some, high # injuries, all positions rotate 2 -3 players throughout the game (except QB) and during the season the #1 offense doesn't practice vs the #1 defense. They have scoute teams that do nothing but simulate the strategies of the weeks opponent . The scoute team players do not play in games or travel but can move up if they impress.

The atmosphere at college football games is crazy infectious. Before you know it, you're joining in with the insanity lol. I remember visiting my friend in Colorado and I'm not even a fan of his school's football team but they had an interstate rivalry game we went to and he gave me a shirt. Next thing you know I'm hanging out with all the CU Buffs fans drinking cheap beer and cheering my lungs out.
Seriously one of the reasons I love people who aren't from the US reacting to and/or going to the games to experience the awesomeness.

I was born and raised in Arizona. My dad was a college professor for a number of years at Arizona State University (ASU). It has a current student population of 73,000. Almost all of my other family members that live in Arizona also went to ASU. It's convenient, right next to Phoenix, in Tempe (temp-ee). So, of course I went to ASU's sports rival, the University of Arizona (UofA) about a three hour drive south of ASU in Tucson (too-sun). It has a current student population of 40,000. Like a lot of other states that have multiple colleges in their state, there is a yearly game between the rival football teams called the Cactus Bowl, sometimes referred to as the Duel in the Desert. With a combined student population over 110,000 students, this is one of the biggest games of the year.
ASU's mascot are the Sun Devils, with a guy running around the fiend in a devil costume with a pitch fork. The mascot's name is Sparky (yes, really). UofA's mascot are the Wildcats. There is Wilbur and Wilma Wildcat. The mascot costumes are like those at Disneyland, with a huge head and full body costume. So there's a girl and boy wildcat running around the stadium getting people hyped up.
At UofA, we had a fight song we'd scream at football games, especially at the Cactus Bowl. (Note: Bear Down is the school motto for UofA, from a student football player WAY back when was dying at a hospital and he told the coach of the football team to tell the other players to, "Bear down", and play strong for him. To "bear down" means to bring out your inner strength to get through the toughest situations.) :
    Bear Down, Arizona
    Bear Down, Red and Blue
    Bear Down, Arizona
Beat the shit out of ASU
LOL! Obviously it's not the official school fight song, but its what all the students screamed.
The biggest college football games are televised live on national TV. From around Thanksgiving to around New Year's, there are a ton of what are called "bowl games" (in addition to big rivalry games between state university teams like the Cactus Bowl), where the top college football teams of that year compete against each other. And bowl games are HUGE, even sometimes with parades days before the football game. One of the most famous is the Rose Bowl in California. The Rose Bowl Parade is televised live and is HUGE in its own right, with all the floats made of flowers, with most of the floats taking up to a year to make. There's also the Cotton Bowl, the Sugar Bowl, the Orange Bowl...no, I am absolutely not making those names up. A lot of times, the bowl will be named after a large industry, sometimes large agriculture, of the region. Like the Orange Bowl is in Florida, where one of their largest agriculture industries is oranges.
The best high school football players get scholarships to play football in college. Then the best college football players are picked up by the NFL. That's one reason why players in the NFL are some of the best athletes in the world, because to get there, they beat out MILLIONS of other players from across the whole country.

The thing hanging out of their waistbands over the butts are towels so they can wipe off sweat/dirt during the game without having to go to the sidelines. Since the game is primarily based around holding/throwing/catching a ball, it is especially common for positions that do a lot of ball handling to have towels to keep their hands/gloves clean and dry.
Quarterbacks, the primarily ball handler, will usually have the towel in the front because they will use it so frequently.

The United States is a highly sports centric country. Football players start playing football as young children in grade school, then Junior high, then high school. Around high school is when things start to get pretty serious and the best are weeded out to go to colleges/universities. All this is to groom a football player to become a pro because from college they are then drafted into professional teams. It's just the way we operate. The same goes for other sports. All of it is a big money maker and great for the economy as well. The marching bands also groom up through the different schools all the way into college/university. However with the bands it pretty much ends after college. Unless I'm wrong, I don't think there is a professional marching band. However the cheerleading squad grooms all the way through the schools into college/university and some of them go to the individual professional teams. We are all out for sports here, from young to old, from school to pro, and of course the Olympics! We even have parties in the parking lot by our cars way ahead of the college/university games as well as the professional games. They are called tailgating parties. The word tailgate is the name given to the opening door to the back of a pickup truck, however it doesn't matter if you have a car or a truck. Everybody sets up grills and shares food and drink before the game in the parking lots. Something you're going to have to check out when you finally visit. I hope this information has helped you understand.

Community. Hope. Joy. Those are reasons people care. Colleges feel more local with perhaps kids you may know, and in less populated areas these contests reign supreme. Hope in the wonderful optimism of a 18-22 year old and the lessons of team building and working with others from many different backgrounds and opinions to achieve a common goal through hard work. The joy that comes from playing a game you love and loving every bit of the journey because you did your best with people you know did the same. Whether you are in it or watching it, it sure is fun to get caught up in the emotion it.

Recruiters go around to high school games to scout out possible players. They're often offered free tuition, room & board, and other things if they'll attend one college over another. They have to keep new players coming in as the others graduate. Quite the discussion lately with the NCAA (the head of college sports). Other than tuition, universities cannot give players money straight out - it has to be education related, or the players would be considered "professional" not "amateurs." The NCAA has recently allowed students to use their "name, image, or likeness" for payment after graduation. It's only fair, as there are college football video games that feature famous players, but those guys weren't seeing a dime from it.

Also, there are only 32 NFL teams which means if you live in rural America like I do, you're most likely going to be several hours away from a pro team. Chris, the horse and rider are the combined mascot of the Florida State Seminoles (SEM-ih-nolz), the horse being Renegade, and the rider being Chief Osceola (ah-see-OH-luh) of the 1800s. Planting the burning lance in the ground declares war on the other team, and the arm thing of the fans is called the chop, as if their arm is a tomahawk.
The Irish flag (just a guess) is probably owned by an Irish American. The marching band put on a show at halftime.
The 2nd. team--in white--had Nittany Lions on their helmets, which is Penn State.
They don't get paid for playing, but instead get a huge discount on the cost of attending the school--a scholarship, as well as a shot at getting on an NFL team when finished. The same is true for the marching band and cheerleaders.

Why? These colleges have been around for 100 - 140 years, and football became very popular from around 1900.
Colleges have huge numbers of Alumni - who like to re-connect to their college days by maintaining interest in its sports teams - mainly basketball & football. Part of that is making a kind of holiday by making trips back to their schools to support the schools and the players..
Penn State - one of the teams you saw in this video - has one of the largest active alumni groups in the world… about 600 thousand.
Our stadium holds about 110 thousand max…. And about 46 thousand students are enrolled at the main campus.
College football is the requirement if a player wants to go to the next level - the NFL.

Football by all rights should be our national sport. The enthusiasm it produces is amazing. College football can produce a pack mentality. You don't necessarily need to be a student, or alum of the college, to be a huge fan, and in places where there's no NFL team, college football can be a good replacement. Football is an extremely violent sport, where each play is a battle, and each game is a war. The padding, and helmets aren't just there for looks. They're actually trying to hurt each other.

There is construction equipment buried under the stadium because it was too deep to get it back out once excavation was complete.

Chris, yes the marching bands are also full time students just like the football players and cheerleaders. But, I think it is so sad when you said that your college sports don't get any fan spport or recognition.

The Penn State entrance reminded me of Jan 1, 1992 when my wife and I were able to attend the Penn State vs Tennessee 1992 Fiesta Bowl in Tempe, AZ as a result of a gift of the tickets from her boss. Penn State won 42-17 in a game in which Penn State lead 21-17 at the end of three quarters (in other words, much closer than the final score indicated). We were setting in the south end zone in full sun for the whole game. If you know anything about Arizona, which I assume that as a German you do not, the Jan 1, 1992 temperature at Sky Harbor Airport (PHX) is about 65F or 18C. In the direct sun for the entire day I was sweating in my long sleeves. If I recall correctly, all but three of the at least three Field Goals or Extra points soared above our heads to the left or the right as we were about a dozen or so lines up in the stands. I can really see the desire to be in the lower seats in games like this, as the grunts, the impacts, and the cursing across the line of scrimmage can only be experienced first hand. I cannot see the desire to spend the money to occupy those seats. Perhaps that is due to my family being relatively poor in the late 1970s and early 1980s since my father was a construction worker during a recession. I hate to spend money on things I don't need.

The University of Michigan beat Alabama at the Rose Bowl on New Year’s Day 2024 in the semifinals to go on to beat Washington (not DC but in State of Washington to win the National Championship). You are correct: teams need to rebuild because of some players going on to the NFL and graduation. Michigan had 18 players selected to try out for the NFL, 13 drafted and 4 more signed up by NFL teams plus our head coach and some assistants are now coaching at LA Chargers…an NFL team. I don’t expect them to win the National Championship but believe they will be in the top 10 rankings. Also Michigan has very high academic standards and it applies to their athletes as well! Not all colleges have such high standards for students and athletes … the later especially.

@@j.w.greenbaum7809 Gee thanks for reminding me....... no actually you are correct and I'll be the first to admit that despite being a perennial power house, Michigan has historically owned Bama in the Bowl season. Back in 2000 Bama had a titan of a team led by RB Suan Alexander who went on to play for the Seahawks and played Michigan in the Orange Bowl. Bama dominated the majority of the game with a multiple touchdown lead until a little known undersized QB Tom Brady began picking apart Bama's defense and lighting up the scoreboard and managed to pull off a 1 point victory over the Tide. Michigan has rightfully earned their tradition with victories like that and with the wars they have fought with Ohio State every year.
