College football has a boatload of traditions. One of my favorites is the University of Iowa’s. The children’s hospital is right by the stadium and they get to watch the game. During the game the whole stadium turns and waves at the kids watching.

Because everything Americans do, is a competition. From grade school to college, and all throughout life, you have school pride built on competition in sports and academics. That pride stays with you forever. Americans NEVER stop rooting for their college team. They may lose interest, but they never change sides.

@@kabirconsiders Another factor is that these schools go way back and aren't going anywhere, whereas your pro team might move 1,000 miles away, then move back to your city 20 years later like, "Are we still cool?" By then a lot of the fans started rooting for someone else out of bitterness. I think the passion is strongest in the south, where they live by the 4 F motto: "Faith, Family, Food, and Football (college, not pro). Cheers!

When you were paused over the University of Michigan stadium, that's the Big House, seating capacity is a little over 107K, but they've had crowds over 115K. That's about an hour from me. They missed a few epic traditions here because these were just entrances. Auburn releases an Eagle from the top of the stands, and as it flies around the stadium they continue the War Eagle chant until it lands at midfield. Colorado is led out of the tunnel by a 1600+ pound Buffalo at a full charge. At the end of every West Virginia game the whole crowd sings Country Road together. There are tons of awesome college traditions.

Because the US is so large, and there are only 32 professional teams in the US (not even one in each state) and they're usually in the largest cities, the closest a lot of regions of the country come to professional level football is NCAA football. So the fans are incredibly enthusiastic. It's about geographic identity and identity with one's alma mater.

To explain Clemson's entrance. They had a coach back in the day named Frank Howard. He went on a offseason trip to Death Valley, California and brought home a rock from there (by law you can't do that anymore) and showed his players the rock. They had a terrible season prior and he told his players that if they don't want to win, they can't touch his rock. Now its part of the entrance tradition to touch "Howard's Rock" as they come to the field for good luck.

It is called Howard’s Rock named after Coach Frank Howard. A friend brought the rock to the coach as a souvenir from the friend’s vacation in Death Valley. At the time Clemson’s football stadium was nicknamed Death Valley. Before one of his game’s Coach Howard used the rock to inspire his team by saying to “only touch the rock if they were going to give him 110%” for that game that day. The team all touched the rock and went on to win the game. Since then it has been used as inspiration and tradition to touch Howard’s Rock before each home game.

In my opinion, you're absolutely right to like the college game more than the pro. The NFL might make more money, spend more money, and attract more eye balls, but college football fans are definitely more passionate. There's so much more pageantry, tradition, and rivalry in the college game. In fact, rivalries barely exist in American professional sports anymore, although they used to (see Yankees vs Red Sox or Red Wings vs Avalanche). College football teams can often fill stadiums even when they haven't been very competitive for a while (see Michigan, Nebraska, Tennessee, etc), but the pros and other college sports cannot

Also, that rock the players touched as they ran in was a hokie stone. All the buildings on techs campus have at least a little bit of hokie stone on them. It's just limestone, but it comes from one specific quarry in Virginia.
Another thing about techs entrance is that it's different now than it was in the video he watched. They play more of Enter Sandman, they don't cut it off right before the singing starts. About half of the song plays, it cuts off right before the start of the second chorus, and we all scream the lyrics every time

Fun fact, because you brought up the richter scale. As of August 2018, 6 college football games measured on the richter scale..... 4 were at virginia tech (the school shown when you said it). I know they've done it at least once more since then. Best entrance in college football and its not even close

My sister went to FSU and we went to quite a few games, it was a good time and the introduction is legendary. I still prefer pro games to college games, I couldn’t explain the passion some fans have for their team, I’m a Browns fan and I remember watching some games with my family this year, a lot of people grow up with these teams so the passion is very real.

@Tim kinley College Football is pretty big in Ohio, with Ohio State being nothing to sneeze at. I enjoy the pro game more than the college game myself. Now, I also have to acknowledge the original commenters thoughts and make an observation. I have been to games in Cleveland (Browns fan here), and games in Cincinnati. The environment is completely different in the two stadiums. This is not bias speaking, Cleveland does a much better job than the Bengals do with game experience. Cleveland spends money on it, Cincinnati treats it like an after thought. Ohio State is a completely different beast. The pageantry is amazing. From the Skull sessions, to the Script Ohio, to the half time show ... to the Hang on Sloopy ... it's an amazing experience. I have been once, when Ohio State was playing Penn State, both Fox Big Noon Kick-off and ESPN College Game Day were there. You don't get a bigger environment for College Football than that. As great as that was, I still prefer the stadium experience in Cleveland than the stadium experience at Ohio Stadium. However, I would take Ohio Stadium 100 times over an experience in Cincinnati (except for the times Cleveland fans show up and dominate the stands. I have been to games in Cincinnati where it felt like a Browns home game, that's how many of us where there). So even in one state the experience is different between college and pro. Here in Ohio, as fan's and as stadiums, we do both well and I am proud of that (Our Pro teams leave a lot to be desired on the field, except or flash in the pan years).
