- Francis Buckley. Grammy winning Audio Engineer. All round great guy. Project studio fairy godmother?
In Studio Rescue we join Francis as he visits a range of home studios and combines the fundamentals of acoustic science with a few hard-earned industry secrets to get the most out of the available space.
This week Francis visits Glenn Smith Jr who suffers from chronic reflections mixing in his tiny bedroom.
Nothing like Grammy winner letting himself in through the front door and randomly walking into your room.
😂
i have always the feeling that the studio rescue program was filmed in the 80s
Looks like 2005
The guy's issues had to do with the speakers he was using, but Rode doesn't make speakers so they gave him some foam and a microphone, and put his tv on the wall. Not exactly a rescue since they didn't actually solve his problems.
+Leggo My Ego You are so right. This so called 'expert' failed to notice that nothing on Earth was going to make that pansy pair of speakers produce bass. I would have added an active sub as a start line and experimented with that for a while. And what's with sticking lumps of foam on random walls going to do? The untreated bits of wall are still going to reflect sound.
Mysterious Squirrel You don't need acoustic panels on the entire wall, only at the angles of reflection from where you're sitting. Check out this tutorial on where to place the panels:
acousticsfreq.com/where-to-place-acoustic-treatment-in-a-home-theater/
Leggo My Ego Well, strictly speaking, when sound is reflected from a wall, there is no control over which direction it will head off in. Acoustic panels are simply overpriced packaging material, despite what the manufacturer might claim. They are a rip off. A curtain, a rug or almost anything will do exactly the same thing.
+Leggo My Ego man, he gives you a super cool shockmount with a Rode mic, i wouldnt complain about that xD
just by studying acustics for more than 30 minutes you'll realise this SHOW is beyond the basics.
it's like acustic broscience.
Smallest speakers EVER.
He found them inside a chocolate Easter egg
1 inch drivers i feel sad probally he found it inside kinder egg
She said they were a good size...
90% of the problem is those mini speaker, did they come with the audio interface, sheesh
The handshake every scene are what always get me about these. Poor guy though, all he really got out of this "rescue" was certain neck pain and a nice mic he didn't really need.
"boy that room was so small we barely had room to change our mind."
hahahahahaha classic. Gonna use that
He seems kinda shy and not cocky. That's good.
I haven't watched all the episodes, but this guy is the most grateful so far. Finally!
This series had so much meme potential, holy shit
YES!!
those kids happy meal speakers
mcdonals happy meal
THEM CHEAP ASS MONITORS LMFAO
Well you're gonna have bass problems with those small ass speakers haha.
Lmao!
mi amigo gracias por tus videos y que dios te vendiga a ti y a los que se unen por esta causa ,saludos desde colombia .
This series is my favorite series on TH-cam. It's so helpful and entertaining. I think I might just apply for my studio rescue.
How did you go with that Chris 🤣
@TriviumCrusader17 Good point, but the premise of Studio Rescue is to try and help amateur studios get the most out of their existing equipment with as small an outlay as possible. Yes this often means the addition of acoustic treatment but alongside speaker placement this is one of the most frequently overlooked aspects of home studio setups and a small investment here can reap rewards and add value across all areas of the recording chain.
Very cool show! I'll watch the rest of them right after this one.
I have learned alot... this guys knows his stuff...
We'll be checking out all entries world-wide for the next season of Studio Rescue, and we're certainly accepting entries from anywhere at all in the US.
Hey, I luv your series. I watch every espisode.
The red lighting behind Francis is a Kino Flo light, although any diffused, coloured LED can add the same vibe to your room at home, and will require less power.
@ProgressiveBeats502 Sorry for that - we've updated the link now so you can apply.
Wow! This is awesome!
@44danoc Thanks NOC! You will want your monitors far enough away from the listener's ears to hear the correct acoustic crossover between the high and low drivers. Generally, you will want the speakers no closer than 1 metre (around 3 feet 3 inches) to be safe. The monitors should be the same distance from each other, as they are from the listener's ears, forming an equilateral triangle. Feel free to experiment with the listening distances, but remember to keep the equilateral triangle position.
casually placed grammy on the table. I dig it.
That screen is way too high up. Hes gonna hurt his neck looking up at it all day long.
love this show
thats like the white nerdy low version of pimp my car
"your studio officially has been rescued!"
great series
@doducnguyen - Studio Rescue is absolutely free. Head over to the Studio Rescue website (linked in the video description) and register your details for your chance to be rescued in the next season!
What an awesome idea for a show!
@daivd333woso The acoustic foam aids in absorbing unwanted reflections in the room, so you are able to hear more of what is coming from the speakers and less of how the space is colouring or distorting that sound.
I love how the explanations at the beginning are so rehearsed and all the competing company logos are covered up.
Man I wish they were still doing this! I have a 12x20 shed that I’m turning into a studio. I’ll have a control room/lounge, a buffer/storage room and a booth
Everyone wants them to rescue their studio, just of the free stuff!
The acting is fantastic
@TriviumCrusader17 Thanks, you're spot on there and Francis does spend extra time with the studio owners outside of the show. Hope you enjoy the rest of the episodes and be sure to check out the other RØDETV programs.
you learn something new every day :D
So many experts behind this and none of them knows that using a TV as a monitor is the dumbest thing ever? They're made for movies, for watching from a distance, that's why they have low dpi. Such a big screen, such small speakers...
***** I have seen Dave Pensado use a TV as a monitor. Your statement is idiotic. Whatever one likes is fine. Whatever works works. The final product is what matters.
very good god bless you for helping
After watching a few of these i've realized
Step 1: move stuff
Step 2: speaker triangle
Step 3: Mirror and foam
Step 4: Advertise for mics
@krazyeknine57 There are obvious considerations for smaller rooms, but that's not to say you can't get a great sound. Again it's all about the fundamentals of your position within the room and then the speaker placement in regards to the listening position. Have you applied for a studio resuce?
acting level over the top
Kids nowadays... "what do you do"? - "I run a recording studio". Which is a total of 200 usd, and it's his bedroom in his parents house 🤣
Speakers are so small the don't produce enough bass for bass traps hahaha
I recorded the vocals on my latest release ESCHTOLOGY in a cramp basement about 7 by 7 foot square, with a ceiling 2 inches above my head. I only hung two small drapes/cloths with one behind the mike. The vocals came out fine. I think it's mostly about the mix and the Mic.
its cool they helped him out they really didnt do much but give him a mic and soundproofing but its good to get alittle push even with a studio
Them monitors are TINY
Need more studio rescue episodes. Rode tv website takes too long to upload.
good idea so much
lol this is like the pimp my ride for Audio Engineers
Awesome video! What foam did he use in the room? Would they be applicable universally to all room conditions?
this mic is dope!
because putting up 4 panels, making the screen bigger & giving them a budget microphone with a sound screen will instantly make his room sound better. face palm...
I need a studio rescuing
I don’t know why but I always lose it when he breaks out the tape measure
You forgot the occasional putting toys lying around up close to the camera while moving stuff around.
Genial lo que hacen, ya he visto mucho y se agradecerian unos subtitulos
What size studio foam did you use on the walls? Please help
I think what you guys are doing for people is incredible. My studio is already dialed but it would still be great to have a professional opinion. The only thing that puzzles me is the reaction from the clients is never fully satisfying to me. I mean, if I were a beginner and somebody came in and dialed in my room for free, then "thanked" me by giving me a nice microphone I would be extatic. Hell, you guys come out to Austria?
I need this..
You don´t want THIS :DD
Just by observation I believe that's the axiom 49 (: It's pretty awesome.
HOLA AMIGO...!! TIENES QUE VENIR A ARGENTINA....!! ERES GENIAL MEN..!!! UN FUERTE ABRAZO ME AYUDASTE MUCHO PARA ARMAR MI ESTUDIO ESTOY EN ESO RECIÉN EMPEZANDO Y TENGO TODO MUCHO MAS CLARO PARA PODER HACERLO ..HERMANO..SALUDOS BUENA VIDA..!!! GENIOOOOOOOOO...!! Y QUE MICROOOOOOO...!!! WAUUUUU..!!! ES EXCELENTE...!!! OJALA PUEDA COMPRAR UNO...SALU2....Y MIL GRACIAS..POR ESTO AMIGO..!!!
I work on small screen. I prefer to move the seating position on the mid of the small room. I used to have a small and made sure I could walk around my DAW. Down side power cable om the floor. But I can clean my whole room regularly. Get speaker off the wall by 2 or 3 feet, you solve 30% of room problem without cost.
How are you using velcro to attach the absorbers? is it tape on one side?
What kind of speaker stands are those? They look so interesting!
damn I can hear the difference. Even through the youtube compression!
Do the acoustic panels need to be sound absorbing or deflecting? Hope that makes sense?? Contoured or flat i guess is what im asking. Is there an advantage of using either in a large or small room.
His description of "his high end" sound like McDonald's French fries.
Yes
1:07 You can never be too crispy
oh ands the mic how much and where lol . . . again great video
@rodemicrophones Nice video. When you're doing the sweetpot measurements, how far apart are the monitors? And how far is the monitors from the person's head to the monitor? In that triangle position I am speaking of.
what type of speaker stands are those? Im looking for some at a good price, I also have krk rokit 5s
what kind of velcro pads is he using to place the acoustic tiles?
"It's got this really trick shock mount that it has"
EightySix you can tell they practice their scripts
what is a better solution a mixer with a built in interface or a serpate mixer for the daw and an interface? I need a goot set up. I am currently using a ma audio 410 but it sucks!
can you tell us what is the software you using it?
hes eyes must be like mashed potatoes after sitting that close to the TV
How do you determine where to place the acoustic foam aids?
@ChromadaData Thanks. right now, they are about 5 inches from the wall with no treatment. i plan n getting some acoustic foam really soon.
If you watch a few more, you might catch on that they're posted (and sponsored) by Rode. There's a bit of logic in that.
I am beginning the process of converting an extra room to a studio. Regarding the foam pads - I notice that they are usually placed in a few locations, but not an entire wall. Would it be bad to cover an entire wall - or at least 50% of every wall in the room?
Me please!
Peace and love from Bristol, England
cool can you tell me what the pannels are for and where can i order them for delivery to ireland. . i subbed 2 great video man
how far should monitors be from the wall behind them
Some advice that should have been given is to actually spend the money on high end monitors because even though you helped treat his room, those entry level speakers might as well be iPod headphones. You cannot expect mixes to translate to other systems on the ass worthy fq response those have
hey francis hope you can visit northern california...quick question my room is 11 foot by 13..do you think the room is to small for a project home studio?i need some pro advice thanks francis
Dude come rescue my studio!
Genial
I don't think that matters. its all on the cone pointing to your ears. but if they are pretty far from the wall, foam should be placed behind them.
how come they dont place absorbants infront of the monitors?
does anyone know those speaker stands or similar ones?
Am can Some one tell wat programe is tht he's using to record and mix please
Damn feel free to rescue my studio
what speaker are they behind you?
@rodemicrophones N.O.C. here, thanks gotcha. Again nice video.
where can i get panels like that
but if you come rescue me 4 pieces of foam is not gonna due haha
Sonny doesn't "make" tracks, he mixes sounds and songs that are already mastered and mostly digital. Totally different situation here, were you would need to insulate a room to record an instrument as pure as you can and then mix.
