The guide lights on the the belly of the tanker are, as you guessed it, designed to guide you to the optimal position for refueling; the left column of lights are your vertical positioning lights (how far forward or back you are to the boom) and the right column of lights are your horizontal positioning lights (how far to the right or left you are from the boom)
Another trick is to keep in mind that the refueling boom describes an arc from the back of the tanker. By changing your altitude relative to the tanker, you also change your relative distance from the tip of the boom as it swings up and down to match your new altitude. You can use this to help keep the hose at optimal length in the second or so lag between throttle input and engines spooling up or down.
one more tip for you guys, try to set the joystick's sensitivity to 0.60 or 0.80 to ensure that you only do minor change to your aircraft while matching up with the tanker
I find it helps to make small circles with both controllers to stay centered on the boom. The throttle just rolls slightly up and down, just enough to take up the slack in the boom.
I remember that one time I completed the objectives for naval test lake mission but I was to low on fuel to rtb and the tanker just wouldn't let me refuel and I failed the mission after 15 attempts.
The lights are also used for when you have a aircraft that has the refuelling boom go behind the pilot meaning they can not see where it is, this makes the lights very necessary with lining up and is there only way of lining up
@@justalpha9138 landing on an aircraft carrier was somehow easy for me. even though I only have 7 hours in the game. however, I still can't dodge missiles and basically don't understand what happens in fight. I'm a civilian pilot, not a military.
Tried another rollercoaster refuel ride just now. Even without talking, it is hard to control pitch, roll and speed at the same time :-) Am constantly getting into pilot induced oscillations (PIO) once I get near the tanker. Will try to use the autopilot for speed next time round, hope that helps. With the F-24 the refuel probe is behind the cockpit, so you have to use the positioning lights for relative altitude and distance. Thanks for your video's will keep trying to do it once without disconnecting.
If ur like me and you have to much adhd or you play with friends and just get it over with. There is a mod that lets u refule just by getting close to a tanker. Tanking can be hard at the start, but it gets a lot easier with practice. I think a basket system would have been a better choice than the boom arm. Seems a lot easier in DCS
nice vid but how to do it with thee f45 where the flaps always change around. if i try to do it and connect to the tanker and then slow down to the tanker speed the plane just changes flaps resulting in me being unable to hold the formation as the handling changed
@@TheFerretsWheels yeah but if the flaps change it doesnt matter how fine my controls are the plane just behaves in a different way which in return takes time to adept

@@adriankohnke9800 exactly
there is no left and right shown by the lights thats why we have the white line in the middle
The tanker being on a constant bank angle is not the most helpful thing either.
A racetrack orbit option would be a good addition for tankers and AWACS

What would we do without you
The auto pilot to match the speed is the easiest way.
It sure is… but less challenging 😁
bro every time i try to refuel mid air im connected to the fuel line, and the pilot of the fueling plane just decides to turn and throw me off
Tankers are usually orbiting a waypoint so you will need a slight bank when refuelling
Oddly enough I do better at this when I switch off flight assist. I get finer control that way.

Does the VTOL plane have any form of speed autopilot? I'm struggling to refuel with it
No, it’s all down to the pilot. Once you get used to small movements it gets easier
