  • Friends, in a universe governed by God's providence, there is no such thing as “dumb luck” or coincidence. Therefore, his election and his choosing is not arbitrary or exclusive. Rather, when God invites his people to mission, he is not calling them for their own sakes, but for the sake of the whole world.

Bishop Barron, thank you for your words at my graduation this Friday at Stubie. I just graduated with my Masters in Catechetics and Evangelization and am now working to spread the Ukrainian Catholic expression of our Faith to Native Peoples. Please keep me in prayer as I try to be an instrument of Gods love to the world as you have reminded us in this sermon.

@@Ykpaina988 We are drawn through three primary transcendentals: Truth, Beauty and Goodness. For me I was attracted by Beauty, drawn in by the Truth (aka the apophatic approach to theology) and the Goodness of the Bishop to hear my desires and support me. The humility of the bishops I have seen in the Ukrainian Church are unparalleled and the faith of many of the priests I have ran into are awe inspiring. Furthermore, the Patriarch's views on Evangelization are right in line with my own and I love how dedicated he seems to be in being apart of spreading the Gospel of Christ to all cultures. Just a few reasons lol

Powerful, penetrating sermon. If, growing up as a sincere Roman Catholic, I had heard more messages like this from the pulpit on Sunday, I might have remained within the flock. As it was, I had to go outside the Church, spending 50 years in various orthodox Protestant settings to hear in-depth preaching from the Bible. I now attend a Reformed church, but I listen very, very closely to Bishop Barron, and I am grateful for his learning, his wisdom, and his heart. Perhaps one day I will be reconciled with the Roman Catholic communion, and if I am, it will be due in no small part to Bishop Barron.

@@geraldarcuri9307 Unfortunately, as one who grew up as a Reformed Protestant - taught that "Rome" is the "Whore of Babilon", and that Luther and Calvin "saved" the pure, first Christianity - I want to cry out loud in helpless lamentation that you , who have been so fortunate to have been born into the Catholic AND ONE Body of our Lord, have left the Church of Christ, the One Kingdom of God ( not 40,000 denominations, still splitting) for one of the one-sided kind of 16th century sects in which I have been raised. I am 76. Dear sir, I have become a Catholic 11 years ago. I do perhaps understand (??) why you might have thought you did the right thing, because I know a lot about the history of Christianity, from day one, and the Western Catholic Church since the 1500's and especially since the 1960's. I know that especially in the USA ( just LOOK at it in our year of 2020!) Catholics have been BOMBARDED from the day they set foot on that continent, with PROTESTANT, half-baked theology- especially in terms of "how we are saved"... oh Lord, my own (sweet) father preached these terrible lies about the Whore who knows nothing about salvation from the pulpit, year in, year out, and especially on 31st October, REFORMATION FEAST DAY. From my vantage point of Africa I ( we!) can only via TV look in utter amazement and horror at the spectacle of the USA - the Lord of the world - the latest Western empire... the Catholic politicians look exactly like the liberal Prots there, that is where the USA's century-old demonizing of the Whore of Babilon ended up with.
I you live in the hotch-potch Christianity ( still left over) of the USA, please please: take 2 years off to study the History of the Christian faith; especially since the 1500's, study the English Reformation, and its aftermaths right into your own country, and OPEN YOUR EYES. In the meantime, you are allowed ( in my historian's view) to give the21st century USA Catholic Church a well-deserved kick behind the arse. But, try and see your US church history within the historical context and be a little more lenient. Catholics in America and even where I live, in South Africa, have been told since the 16th, 17th century that they are NOT even CHRISTIANS. They cannot be patriots (of any country except a Protestant one). 500 years of relentless demonizing.
And, you FELL for this LIE!??? As a cradle Catholic.... the mind boggles. I say this as a former Calvinist.

I see my long and heartfelt reply got lost. LOL! perhaps because I am 76 years old, and have something to say in terms of history, to brother Gerald Acuri. Oh well, these things are in God's hands. Gerald: shortly; do your homework. Look at the state of "protestantism" today, 500 years after the Reformation... and it has - unfortunately - impacted the Catholic Church in the USA.

Hey Bishop B. I am so moved by your words here, how you illuminate God's Word as you are gifted to do. For the world, as you say.....Synchronicity. No coincidences. I was baptized twice! Born on Dec 22 and got very sick in the hospital-baptized on Christmas Day. Then I got all well (Thank You Jesus) and was baptized in a proper church (St. Augustine's) with my family present months later as a lil' boy should. I think of that and it just makes me cry. It's like a tactile connection to God's Presence and Providence that I sometimes can feel. Thanks. :) JV Johnny

When God gives a charism to a person or a nation, it’s not for themselves but for others, always. God uses that person for His plans and it wouldn’t be an easy life. But God helps them and gives them endurance to carry out His plans and imbues them with His love to make it easy for them to carry such a heavy burden.
I read the messages of True Life in God that Jesus has been giving to a Greek lady by the name of Vassula Ryden since 1985 to this day. It’s about the unity of the churches. They have been examined by the Vatican. In the messages Jesus tells her that He chose her before she was born not bc she was special but bc he could find no one as wretched as she was to receive His messages which He calls them “ love letters” to mankind. She has a very difficult life. She has no time to rest. She has to write down the messages that Jesus dictates to her on her knees for 5-6 hours a day in the beginning for a number of years but now it’s not as much) and she spends most of her time in planes enduring a lot of hardship like flight delays (sometimes for 8-10 hours) and persecution and more.

PRAISES & GLORY TO GOD IN JESUS CHRIST, FOR YOU, BISHOP BARRON. I believe that you are one of God's chosen people for spiritual enlightenment of God's Word, to carry on Jesus' mission, not just for your sake , but for all nations in the world. Israel has ever believed that she is God's blessed first-born nation, and thus be blessed for the support given to her. Did God get tired of waiting for Israel to weep bitterly for rejecting Jesus Christ? I believe that Jesus is there forever with open arms to Israel.
Populations of all nations have multiplied & became sinners, generally. Jesus now welcome everyone to belong to God's Kingdom who LIVE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD & for his glory, persevere & live in value of JESUS LIFE, DEATH, & RESURRECTION,, persevere by active faith facing challenges in life, with humility, and deserving conduct before God.. WE MAY ALL AGREE THAT ISRAEL WAS GOD CHOSEN FOR A MISSION, "NOT ONLY FOR HERSELF BUT FOR ALL THE NATIONS. IN THE SAME TOKEN, ANY GOD-CHOSEN IS NOT JUST FOR SELF, OR A HANDFUL BUT FOR ALL. GOD BLESS ALL. PRAYERS.....

That this woman, in her persistence for her daughter's healing was God's tool to teach Jesus about the be inclusive nature of God's love and Jesus, in turn taught it to us. I wouldn't contradict a priest, but it niggled at me. I feel differently, and saw this gospel in a whole new light after listening to your sermon. Thank you, I appreciate it.

Yes, can't the churches and christians be so ex-clusive! Way back in Isaiah's time, God was telling the 'chosen people' to open out, welcome in anyone who's interested. Doesn't matter who they are - if they want to get to know God, that is all that matters. Jesus was still telling them hundreds of years later! And still we won't accept everyone - unless they conform to what we choose to believe. When God chooses someone to bring into the fold, who are we to keep them out or impose conditions on them?

    3. Whenever you raise this Crucifix against evil power, I will open heaven and let My Precious Blood flow to subdue the evil power.
    4. I will let My Precious Blood flow from all My Sacred Wounds and cover all who venerate My Wounds and Blood through this Crucifix.
    159
    5. I promise to protect any house where this Crucifix is against any destructive power in the hour of darkness.
    6. I promise to perform numerous miracles through this Crucifix.
    7. I will break their hearts of stone and pour My love on them that venerate My Agonizing Crucifix.
    8. I promise also to draw straying souls closer to Myself through this Crucifix.
    9. Children, in the days of the evil one you will be able to go freely without any harm through this Crucifix.

The anointing with sacred chrism, perfumed oil consecrated by the bishop, signifies the gift of the Holy Spirit to the newly baptized, who has become a Christian, that is, one "anointed" by the Holy Spirit, incorporated into Christ who is anointed priest, prophet, and king.

This homily was earth-shattering for me in its implications; it was like a huge missing piece was finally put in the puzzle of my theological framework. Thank you so much, Bishop Barron.
As a former Baptist I grew up with a theology heavy on predestination and election. We were taught that God chooses some and rejects others - in the eternal sense (ie. predestinating some for heaven and some for hell) wherein free will plays no part. This is a hard doctrine to believe while still viewing God as loving. As a Catholic I finally came to understand that election and predestination referred to God bestowing favor on some, and not on others, according to His divine plan, while still allowing all of us the freedom to choose or reject His grace.
And now, through this homily, you have taken that principal to the next level by explaining WHY. Why did God chose me to be baptized? Why has he bestowed favor upon me through the Church? Not simply for my own good. He chose me so that I could bring His divine favor, the richness of the gospel, to others. And so we see that God bestows divine favor on some for the good of ALL!

This is interesting, I would like to extrapolate that, in politics, we are choosing politicians for what they can do for the nation, not choosing the politician for them.
But many politicians don't see it as they are chosen for the benefit of the nation, but for the betterment of themselves. A better society, if more acknowledged this.
