I do apologize for this I listened to everything you had to say about the book but I just cant really understand why did he smile when he died at the end of the book Was it because he was grateful for the chance he was given or was it because he had made a difference in his life?
The end of the story leaves on an unfinished note. So I can understand the confusion - I believe he smiles for exactly the reason you gave. It was his last act to bring about redemption.
Not a problem :-) So the main thrust of the book is redemption, atonement - looking after the baby and being willing to sacrifce himself for it redeemed him - so yes you are right.
Hi! I hope it's not too late - Boston is more educated, has a conscience and not violent, he questions Tsotsi. Die Aap is simple minded, follows Tsotsi without question, uneducated. Butcher is violent, streetwise, and follows Tsotsi as long as he benefits from it.
Tsotsi is more than a story about a man who finds mercy and redemption. It is a harsh criticism on the apartheid system that ruined society. I wonder what you think of possible critiques on race and gender in the novel? For example, the “erotic waves” that overcome Miriam when she breastfeeds, or the only positive roles that women play being ones of motherhood. I also wonder about its commentary on race - it seems to me as though the (white male) author is perpetuating an idea that certain black men of townships live only to kill. I’m interested because I studied this several years ago in a Scottish highschool, and now rereading it in my leisure I find far more issues than I did before
I think you've made some really good points! The focus is definitely on Tsotsi and his rode to redemption, during this though - it's like you say - the author indirectly reveals his thoughts on matters of gender and race. The females are seen as vulnerable and weak - think of Cassim's wife who can only cry and begs to go back to Durban, the woman dumping the baby etc. While I do think the violence and rawness is used to highlight the terrible environment and circumstances of those living the Townships, it does seem to have a far more negative result. What struck me was the portayal of virtues being a weakness - hope, care, generosity etc.
@@elanacarmel2135 So right at the end of the book Tsotsi rushes in to save the baby, but the wall collapses on him as he gets to the baby, he is then dug out from under the rubble - not directly stated, but implied
As far as the story goes, he lost the instruction and nurturing that comes with a family, secondly he was influenced by the rough lifestyle in the township - survival of the fittest

Why does he die with a smile on his face?
He found redemption. After everything he had done, he sacrificed himself for another and so he felt he had atoned for his bad actions.
