The dongle also includes an optional cable, for you to continue to connect it to an internal USB 2.0 header So at the end of the day, it's still way smaller than the prior 4-port controllers, and now you have two different connection options for it.

The prior fans still used a USB-Based controller, so overall USB ports in the entire case hasn't changed if using a single controller. And the dongle also includes an optional cable, for you to continue to connect it to an internal USB 2.0 header, if you don't want to use an external port. Going forward, this reduces the number of USB slots needed, as prior devices each needed their own controller... now, for example, you can have both fans and your Strimer cables connected to one single controller.
No, you will need to continue to use your current controller. The Wireless Controller so far supports the SL V3 fans and V3 Strimer cables today... and will support future model fans and devices moving forward.
There are adapters that make it so motherboard9pin usb connections become standard usb 2.0/3.0 inside the case. Look for motherboard 9pin usb adapters if you dont want the dongle at the back of the case you can have it inside.
The dongle also includes an optional cable, for you to continue to connect it to an internal USB 2.0 header If the dongle isn't connected, they wouldn't completely stop working... but it would be similar to earlier versions of fans where the USB cable comes unplugged... they would still have power, so the fans would spin, but the lighting on the fans would revert to "default" settings, since the L-Connect background process isn't communicating with the fan.

Interesting idea to reduce wiring. But this takes up a USB slot and now more power consumption moved to the USB receiver, though very little.
