That funky r&b and pop janet sound was due to her collaboration with iconic jimmy jam and terry lewis they had some songs with cherrelle andnother singers and with Janet collabing with them they took it out of the ballbark
You really should check out her performance at the 1987 Grammys where she performs an absolute banger version of this song with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. What a show stopper!!
This right here? Janet hit like a megabomb. No one was expecting this from her. There was no one in R&B music quite like her at the time. Teenagers like me learned the choreography, we wore the earring, we teased our hair for that Janet look. Totally fell in love with Janet, and to see her break away from her brothers and be her own superstar? It was everything. And she was the blueprint in the 80s in more ways than one. Teddy Riley said that Control was the blueprint for him creating the New Jack Swing genre of music a few short years later..
This was really cool to watch, thank you for honoring Janet’s legacy. What was fun for me is how you guys were really sniffing this out, as you said this was a pioneering sound made possible by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis who were not only in a band with but heavily influenced by Prince. Lastly, that pioneering sound was later adopted by Teddy Riley who gave us “New Jack Swing” and had the 90’s rockin!! You guys were definitely on point with the guess work.🙏🏾👏🏾👊🏾
Conversation at the table was with Paula Abdul. She was starting her rise to fame being choreographer for Janet Jackson amd she starts and dances in several Janet videos. Jennifer Lopez also first appear in a Janet video choreographed by Paula in early 90s...
The Blueprint is very accurate! 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾 Beyoncé said she used to literally study Janet. Quite a few artists (like Britney) and music execs have confessed that artists were told to pretty much copy Janet but were told to say Madonna was their influence. Same goes for boy bands. Many of them have confessed that they were told by execs to copy male r&b groups like Boyz 2 Men and New Edition. New Kids On The Block was created literally just to take attention/fans away from New Edition. Dave Grohl confessed that he stole most of his drum performances during his Nirvana era from funk and r&b bands like The Gap Band.
Fun fact: Michael Jackson, Prince, and Madonna were all born in the American Midwest during the same summer. The summer of 1958. That’s so wild. They’re commonly referred to as “The Trinity of Pop” because together they all created pop music as we currently know it. Oh, Kate Bush was also born during the same summer. She was born in England, tho.
This style of dance-pop/contemporary R&B is called ‘new jack swing’. Janet is one of the first artists to have her album “Control”, which this song is from, produced under this genre.
Its impossible to describe how big this album (her 3rd) was for Janet. Most of the Jacksons were seen as Michaels siblings. She went from singer/actress to megastar overnight. She really was the blueprint- from 1986 forward, every pop female singer was trying to copy her look and style, and they were being pushed to dance in their videos (even if they weren't good dancers). That was The Janet effect.
Production by the (LEGENDARY) duo, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis! It's the Minneapolis sound! They've worked so much with Janet and so many other artists. (Pretty sure she recorded this album at Flyte Tyme in Minneapolis.) This sound is very much of the mid-late 80s, thanks to Jam and Lewis. Love the second Janet week!
Janet became a singing superstar during the 80's but she was already well-known when she was even younger in the 70's as an actress. She always had a great charismatic presence on the Jackson TV Specials, playing Penny on Good Times, and Charlene on Different Strokes. Back then it was clear who the next huge star in the family was going to be after her brother Micheal!
If I’m not mistaken, Janet was appearing in the television series “Fame” just prior to this album dropping and becoming the next mega superstar. The dancers featured here ( including choreographer Paula Abdul!! ) are from the TV series and were in almost all her videos from “Control”. Absolutely AMAZING track and still such a vibe.
This is the Minneapolis sound produced by Jimmy jam and Terry Lewis Lewis, who came from the Prince camp. This was Janet’s first single from her explosive Control album. You must review her doing this live on the Grammy Awards with her producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Epic performance!
It's interesting that you guys referenced Prince's sound since Jam and Lewis who produced the Janet track, had worked with him (they were in his earlier band) and may have been influenced by him in shaping their sound.
Janet Jackson is known for being the BLUEPRINT for female entertainers doing singing and choreographed routines. Her "Control" video influenced Bobby Brown's " My Prerogative " video as well, so her as well as Michael Jackson were a huge influence in music video's in the 80s, 90s, and beyond.
You guys really nailed it with the Prince reference. Janet Jackson's producers on this song and this album used to work with Prince as members of "The Time". You'll notice a similarity in their sound. Prince even covered "What have you done for me lately" a few times in live concerts.
This was the first release from her 1986 Control album. Janet's videos became more like mini-movies as time went on, similar to her big brother Michael. "When I Think of You" is another early fun video from the Control album. Check out "Alright" though, which I believe was her response to Michael's "Smooth Criminal" incarnation.
Janet had recorded 2 albums under her father's management. They did okay but she wanted more control. So she fired her father and John McClain, who was with A & M Records, introduced Janet to Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. They brought in the Minneapolis sound. And this was the first single from the album called....Control. Paula Abdul is the choreographer. She was the dance coach for the Laker Girls and she was dating one of the Jackson brothers at the time.
So glad you are doing a Janet Jackson week 2!!! She had so many hits! She is so underrated thanks to the Super Bowl fallout. At one time, she was bigger than Michael, but younger people have no idea. Janet had an enormous impact on the music industry… and on me. Thank you guys for showing her some love ❤️

@JM8737 Hello Mike & Joe, wanted to let you guys know that you are doing a fantastic job. I thoroughly enjoy the chemistry between the two of you, and that you are diverse in the artists/music that you review. Keep up the awesome work! I also love that you have reviewed two of my favorite artists, Janet and Whitney. So glad you are doing a 2nd week of Janet. Janet has a GIANT catalog of hits, and there is so many classic, iconic songs videos to explore. Here are another 5 videos, and three bonus video for the 2nd Janet week. 1) Miss U Much (make sure it's the extended video with the iconic chair dance routine at the end), 2) Nasty, 3) Rhythm Nation, 4) When I Think of You, 5) Escapade 6)Pleasure Principle, 7) That's The Way Love Goes , and 8) Love Will Never Do (Without You).... and this is just some of her amazing work. You won't regret it. Thank you again for such a great show. You guys are amazing!
I feel like 90s Janet is the real "blueprint" it's when she really carved out her lane and set the foundation stylistically for all the y2k pop stars to follow
Agreed! She has at least 4 decades of music in total. I feel like in the 80's she was just getting started and establishing herself (not to minimize the success of "Control" or "Rhythm Nation"). But by the 90's, she REALLY took it to another level and solidified herself as an icon, outside of her brother's shadow. 90s Janet was untouchable and definitely her prime.
I completely agree. 80s Janet was sort of a "Proto Janet", incredible but not quite there yet. Her 90s style has been copied by every other pop and r&b star that has come ever since.
But you can’t exclude 1986 Control album from Blueprint discussion. The themes of the album (particularly female empowerment, independence), the music videos and choreography, the album visuals (she had “eras”), the Pleasure Principle 1987 dancing by herself in the warehouse was a game changer and left an imprint on so many futures artists
My favorite era of Janet 🙌🏿 Pleasure Principal soon come? You're going to see all the influence on the r&b girls, and Britney. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis brought her that Minneapolis sound.
OMG, I've loved this song and watched this music video a thousand times since it came out, and I never noticed the change of the diner walls with the cartoon images added as the video progressed. 😁💚
Thank you., I saw her in concert here in ATL on the 21st Motha is still an Icon... looking at old footage with Paula Abdul who was the choreographer at the time I believe she left The Lakers
Am I the only one who sometimes subconsciously mixes this with Joyful Joyful from Sister Act 2???? 😂 🎶What have you done for him lately? He watches over EVERYTHING! SO WE SIIING…🎶 😂
You guys caught it! But ‘the Blueprint’ to ME, is evident when women were not really singing songs like this ‘female empowerment’. Eddie Murphy’s iconic standup ‘’Raw’’ has a whole bit he says about how Janet has all the women saying “What have you done for me lately?” 😂 - When you guys tap into to the other songs “Nasty”, “Control”, “Pleasure Principle” they were all really statement songs for women in the 80s. And everyone from Beyoncé & Britney to Ciara and Aaliyah have all cited Janet.
Interesting that you should mention Prince's "When Doves Cry" because the producers of Janet's album was Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, who were members of the group The Time. The Time was founded by Prince and their songs were written and produced by Prince. So if you're hearing some Prince influence here that is the reason why.
Every now & then, Mike & Joe accidentally get ALL the facts right! And it tickles me!☺️ Hopefully by song # 4 they would've found out that they were very much correct about that sound they heard on this record. Jam/Lewis/Janet were a monster trio for this 'Control' album! 📻💃🏾🎙️🎶
But Jimmy & Terry were also musicians before meeting Prince. Jimmy was born in Minneapolis and Lewis was going to college there. It’s not like Prince did everything. Prince fired them because they started working with other artists, which was against his rules lol

Yes this song serves as a good introduction to what's to come for Janet later down the line to become an omega star Janet has two album prior from 1982 and 1984 but they didn't make her a really huge star until her third album (1986)
This was my personal favorite Janet songs and videos list for them to react to. The Janet week 1 subscriber requested songs from Velvet Rope, All For You, Janet, and Discipline. Whoever requests future Janet weeks can pick whatever songs they want to be on their list. Maybe then we’ll get Rhythm Nation, Miss You Much, Escapade, Control, Nasty, and sooo many others 🤷♂️✌️
This is what came to be called New Jack Swing and it was very much the sound of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. There's a lot of jazz and funk in it so it sounds different from the 80's pop that you're thinking of like Whitney Houston's dance hits and the synth heavy songs by people like The Eurythmics and OMD. New Jack Swing was artists like Janet, Bobby Brown, Keith Sweat, Jody Watley. I think it's kind of similar to the Minneapolis sound that Prince has in his 80's stuff which is probably why you're reminded of "Little Red Corvette" and maybe "Raspberry Beret". It was basically one of the black styles made popular in the 80's.
@@finefeatheredfriend9240 Vert iconic, absolutely! Most, I disagree. Well Rhythm Nation absolutely but I’d disagree with Control being the other Most influential album of them all. But these are matter of preference convos. It’s ALL iconic music from the queen and I’m just happy we all love her enough to push for our fav music from her ❤️
Not sure if someone else mentioned: Fairly certain the girl sitting at the table with Janet in the opening dialogue is Paula Abdul. She was a choreographer and did the choreography for this and other Janet songs before becoming a pop artist herself.
The dancer who plays Janet's boyfriend here was a star of mid-80s music videos. I think he's in the "Escapade" video with Janet and also in "Mercedes Boy" video with Pebbles
Awesome that you're doing Janet Week 2! Keep them coming! It's great to hear you're thoughts! What you hear here is the start of "New Jack Swing' which becomes popular in the late 80s and early 90s! The reason she is called the Blueprint is most female artist have followed her path - not only musically but her style as well. Bring on #4
Janet had arrived. Her breakthrough single, and the lead from the legendary Control album. Janet and her producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis ushered in a new sound. Definitely has the Minneapolis sound because of Jam & Lewis’ musical roots. Have you guys done Nasty, the follow-up single. Another iconic signature song with brilliant choreography. Love how you appreciate the fashion. She’s so beautiful.
I really hope you guy react to Janet's The Pleasure Principle video. Hands down the best Female Dance Video of Allllllll time. Please take a look and react. Also if you get a chance react to Janet's Miss You Much (Extended Version Video) that has the famous chair dance at the end of the video. I hope you can make it happen.
I always loved this video. And peep iconic American Idol judge Paula Abdul dancing and Monica and Rachel’s odd downstairs neighbor, Mr. Heckles from Friends as the diner server 😂
The story continues with “The return of the Cap” The question people want to know is, where has it been? What do you say about another Q&A? I say yes!🤘
I guess you could say this was a new sound for the 80s. I mean she was young and so this was "new" and trendy. Janet said she liked British family group Five Star. They too were on the cutting edge of new sounds for the 80s. Urban pop rnb.
This album was produced by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, former members of The Time, who were protégés of Prince. Prince use to play a bit of this song in concert and intimate that he wrote it or had a big hand in its creation.
But he didn’t. He was annoyed they gave it to Janet and it became a huge hit. There’s many stories of his diva antics 😂😂😂 it’s his fault though - he fired them, so they worked with other artists including Janet
re. "I'm Unfamiliar with 80s Janet" Wow!! I'm Speechless! literally Floored! No offense, but I found that 90s Janet week un-listenable. But _Now_ You'll hear what made her "Janet Jackson"
You find If, Together Again, and All For You unlistenable? Well, at least you’re not the only one that’s floored, although in my case it’s figuratively.
@@Micah1814 Yep, you're right. Like Prince said, "My face is red. I stand corrected." Yeah, Janet in the 90s was _still_ Fire. (How could I forget a favorite like "Love Will Never Do." and many more.) I guess it was the 2000s when I wrote off J.J., but only after All For You. Which was definitely a return to form.
Hi guys, I know people ask you to watch so many things, but it would really mean the world to me, other Aussies, and this amazing Aussie singer if you checked out some of her music videos.
Choreographed by Paula Abdul!
You can’t mention new jack swing without mentioning Teddy Riley.
@@TheKittsPajamas Yes forgive me!!
@@EagleFang74 😂 Forgiven! 😘
I’m going to see her in concert tonight.
say Hi! for us.
Enjoy!!
her songs *DAMN BABY* and *MADE FOR NOW* are _more recent_ songs that are fantastic with great videos
Yayyyyy Janet week 2!!! But why allll 80s??? I need to just pay for a Janet list because all these lists are frustrating 😂
So frustrating!! 😂😂😂
No fr because I need a reaction to "Got Til It's Gone" so so bad 😩
@@thegarlicknotz7163 We need some LIVE reactions on her week!
C’mon 😂! Because she dropped the 2 most iconic albums of her career in the 80s.
Yayyyyyyyyyyy glad. We got another week...
Paula Abdul is the friend in Yellow Janet is talking to in the booth at the beginning of the video.
I hope.you guys will be doing any time any place & rock with u 💜
Awesome that you're doing Janet Week 2! Keep them coming! It's great to hear you're thoughts!
What you hear here is the start of "New Jack Swing' which becomes popular in the late 80s and early 90s!
The reason she is called the Blueprint is most female artist have followed her path - not only musically but her style as well.
Bring on #4
Thanks you. Elvis
Who else is actually looking forward to the What Have You Done For Me Lately corporate video???!!??
Is that Paula Abdul speaking to Janet in the beginning?
Paula is a in the video. But a friend of Janet is the voice that you hear
@@janetlova30 Oh ok. Her voice was throwing me off because I said Paula doesn't sound like that😂
Janet had arrived.
Janet, Paula Abdul, Lisa Lisa and the Cult Jam, Taylor Dane, Miami Sound Machine - It was a good time to be a 12-year-old girl 😂❤
Song always gets stuck in my head when I hear it
Yay!!!!!! Cause I was just talking about this!!! We need lots more Janet on the channel
I always loved this video. And peep iconic American Idol judge Paula Abdul dancing and Monica and Rachel’s odd downstairs neighbor, Mr. Heckles from Friends as the diner server 😂
Iconic choreographer and artist…
The story continues with
“The return of the Cap”
The question people want to know is, where has it been?
What do you say about another Q&A? I say yes!🤘
I guess you could say this was a new sound for the 80s. I mean she was young and so this was "new" and trendy. Janet said she liked British family group Five Star. They too were on the cutting edge of new sounds for the 80s. Urban pop rnb.
I'm just hoping Nasty is number 1
Interesting information: Janet's male dancer partner is now transgender. Her name is LANA.
There’s many stories of his diva antics 😂😂😂 it’s his fault though - he fired them, so they worked with other artists including Janet
please react to made for now and all nite by janet
Similar production meant often the same producers. Look up Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.
Rudy huston @ 1:33 is now Lana Houston
(How could I forget a favorite like "Love Will Never Do." and many more.)
I guess it was the 2000s when I wrote off J.J., but only after All For You. Which was definitely a return to form.
Please consider these songs for the rest of Janet Jackson Week 2!
-Black Cat (rock song)
-Got 'Til It's Gone
-Rhythm Nation
-This Time
The songs on the list have already been selected by the subscriber who donated for the week.
Hi guys, I know people ask you to watch so many things, but it would really mean the world to me, other Aussies, and this amazing Aussie singer if you checked out some of her music videos. Cosima De Vito.
“Now that you can’t have me”
“One night without you”
“When the war is over”.
Her entire debut album (“Cosima”, from 2004) was written and produced by THE Diane Warren.
I know you will love her voice.
Cosima is Australia’s Celine Dion.
Something different for you guys to watch/listen to.
Lots of love and support from Australia, Mark xox
Fun fact, the person playing the guy love interest has since come out as trans and physically transitioned to female presenting.
I see my list didn't make it...Y'all choose them Euro sing competition instead of one week of pure enjoyment with Mya.😵💫😵💫
Give them a chance. They might do it next week.
@@janetlova30 folks voted for another euro sing competition instead. Let's see if this coming weekend live the list make it
Janet > Michael
Fun fact: Janet's love interest in this video who she's asking what has he done for her lately transitioned into a woman a few years later
