TF hello With my surplus stocks i scrub them down with a brush an scotch bright pad in hot soapy water (dawn) then linseed oil, really brings out the grain of the wood. Merry Christmas. THANKS for the video.
I know its heresy to the purists, I get it. But I like to clean dirty milsurp wood with Eezy Off oven cleaner. A couple 30 minute applications followed by a complete spray with vinegar to neutralize the base. Then hang up to dry for couple days. Most all of the dirt and grease are gone. No sanding required.

It's your rifle, but I would leave the buttplate as is. Just put the martini Henry buttplate back on it. It's cool
