Looks like typical RTI condition with a bit more wire wheel damage to the stock than usual. The top handguard wings are also broken off, but that's not uncommon. Thanks for sharing!

Looks like the 1918 B grade they sent me but the rear top handguard has two cracks in it. And mine had the squared cocking piece.

Yes definitely wire wheeled. RTI is notorious for doing this. They wire wheeled my 1886 Lebel from 1890.
When you remove the forstock be sure to remove it parallel from the action. If you don't you can damage the draws and split the rear end.
Rifling looks pretty good use a 303 bullet to check for muzzle erosion.
    Cheers!

That's what I figured they did to clean it up a bit from what they look like
Thanks for the advice I will definitely be more careful in the future in that way.

      What’s wire wheeling?

    • @jasontorre3267
      @jasontorre3267 ปีที่แล้ว

@ethanleveque wire wheeling is when they use a rotary wheel and grind off all of the dirt and rust from the weapon, there by destroying the original finish hiding underneath the rust. Once this is done, there is no way to restore the original finish. It is down to bare metal. When guns are covered in rust or "patina," one of the best ways to deal with the rust is to boil the gun in water for about 45 minutes then card the rust of with a carding wheel. Carding wheels are very soft wire wheels. So soft you could push your finger in the path and not be injured.
I would recommend watching a channel call Anvil gunsmithing by Mark Novak. He explains all of this in great detail.
      Cheers

Looks like a good example of a B Grade from RTI. Your No 1 Mk III* was made in the Ishapore factory in India in 1944. The wire brush is pretty intense on this one. Some linseed oil should help cover up the wire wheel scratches. Ensure you remove the buttstock last, otherwise you can split the forestock.

RTI probably didn't wire brush it. They're not total amateurs. The Ethiopian goat wranglers thought they were helping. They got my M48 too. Makes it a pain to rust blue. But hey, Adventures in Surplus, right?

Made in 1944 Ishapore, India arsenal. The wood might be rosewood or teak. Remember the barrels had a
    10,000 round life.

the idiots should have just left the dirt. dirt hurts nothing. brushes do.
seems like you got lucky with RTI.
Just picked up an enfield 1928.
Most of the bluing is good under wood. Still has cosmo (had in a hot car for a bit lol).
Bore is pretty good but the throat is worn.
Missing front top handguard but otherwise in nice shape!
Been trying to replace one of my many 3's after 30 years.
    Now? Looking for a no4.

Made in Ishapore India. Looks like someone took a wire wheel to the metal and damaged the wood.

The 303 brit makes a fine hunting rifle for deer, hogs and even bear just sportarised the stock and check the crown before you spend the time to rework the stock.
