Add a bit of black to darken. Makes great anodized colors.

Might benefit from a base coat of the color you want to lighten, or dry brushing it on instead. Haven't tried it, but I am a mad scientist due to budget.

Would it have a different result if use with brushes?

I just got a couple of bottles of the Metal medium a couple of days ago and was trying to find some usage examples before deciding what I'm going to use it for. I don't see any reason why you couldn't use this with a brush as long as you mix the paint and the medium well before usage (if you decide to use it that way). If you're not 100% sure about the results that you're going to get using certain paints/mediums/thinners etc. it's always good to test it out on something (plastic spoons are very useful at least with an airbrush) before painting the actual piece that you're working on.

I bought this stuff and it is extremely disappointing. It’s basically just White Pearl so mixing 1:1 with any color is going to lighten it several shades. It looked almost no different from the base color except it has some glittery flecks which are only noticeable if you shine a really bright light on it. Also if you apply a clear coat it completely kills the glittery effect but since you can’t really see it under normal lighting conditions it doesn’t really matter anyway. Buy real metallic paints instead of this.

If you need that, I think their "plastic putty" does that, I think it needs a suspension though.
