Kudos to the pilot and the whole team! Been on a few "rides" with our pilots for an electrical utility and those pilots are incredible - be safe y'all and thanks for keeping all of us fed. Oh yeah, the radio is cool too...I also have that 3 bander Fang and it still works pretty well. Cheers!
I agree with your assessment of the A36Plus and have bought one despite the dirty reports. Do note, one TH-camr did measure a clean transmission. His test was done by using an antenna to receive on his tinySA to measure the transmissions of the talked with its stock antenna. Since the stock antenna is not resonance for the harmonics, the actual transmission is much cleaner. The other TH-camrs measure their talked cabled directly to their analyzers. In essence, the antenna is a band pass filter!
Talkpod has since upgraded and updated the A36PLUS. It's now is clean, has 999channels, about 8 watts, added signal strength meter, able to name channels from the keypad, upgraded the battery to a 3200mAh capacity and more. They named it the A36PLUS 8W. I had just bough a couple off Amazon and very happy with them.
thx for the review! I’m new to this. For preapredness I have PTT radios for my wife and I. I have CB radios and police scanners. But have no experience with amateur radio. Is this device a good place to start?
correct me if I am wrong, but I believe the reason the Japanese do not readily incorporate newer standards is because of licensing. We know the Chinese don't care about that.
Just today mine was dying (battery) as I went out & I simply grabbed the powerbank… & it quickly charged. The screen is really nice. Is there a way to tell it’s “on” when the screen goes to sleep? For baofeng: there are better/larger batteries that charge directly from USB-a -to-barrel connector.
The chirp version i have has nothing on the left side menu?? - it has a top menu, but doesent seem to have so many options as yours!? very strange, Levi
For your collection, I'd love to send to you a shoulder patch from the New York City Transit Police Department, but I've only a uniform-worn couple of them, and there are no more of those patches since the NYC Transit and NYC Housing Police Departments merged with the NYPD. Sorry.
Bob, I've warned you before about Baofenging in public! Can get yourself busted for that. Seriously: Having had 3 Baofengs, all with serious problems, I just an't get excited about chinese rigs. My right-out-of-the-box #1 suspicion is how clean spectrally is the TalkPod? Just watched a test done on a service monitor and the TalkPod is dirty full stop. 2nd and 3rd harmonics are out of spec. Besides causing out-of-band interference another problem is that power in the harmonics is robbing power that could otherwise be going to the fundamental frequency. I guess this problem could be shined on if one is using a pair of these HTs out in the boonies (e.g., for hunters) where they'd be so far out that there wouldn't BE anyone who'd suffer from the interference. My #2 suspicion is front-end selectivity. Baofengs are notorious for having lousy front ends where they get easily overloaded by signals near to the radio's operating channel. Sorry to be such a Donny Downer that cares about quality in a rig.
A bit pricey? Its $60 and still chinese trash. The baofeng is complete garbage and the audio is awful. Where do you get a DMR radio for $10? Spend more on the radio and stop spending so much money on blow. Lol
@@rangerjay7971 you can buy the dmr baofeng for $70. Atleast you can digital with the radio. Maybe trash but for 20 bucks take use it for events not my $500 ht. If it falls breaks l just order another one. My ft5 use my go kits.
Cool helicopter video! As for the Talkpod - Yeah, I don't know. I have enough HT's - not sure I need another. USB-C charging is cool, and it LOOKS cool. It also does Airband, which is also cool (I don't think you mentioned that...). I'll probably pass for now, but thanks for the review! DE K7RLN
DO NOT GET THIS RADIO! Firstly, it is technically only "legal" (in that it has a certification) on GMRS frequencies. Just because it can be unlocked to use Ham VHF/UHF bands, it's not technically legal to do do. Secondly, it fails a test regarding spurious transmission on all bands SPECTACULARLY. You can very easily pick this thing up on as far away as the 3rd harmonic. Get a Radtel RT-470X instead. it's about the same price, does even more (including the USB-C charging), and is also Chirp compatible.
Thanks Bob, footage at the end was an amazing bonus too!

Nice looking little rig. and the crop dusting was sweet to watch.
Thanks for the video.. You're my favorite Cop!
I also like the USB-C on the battery. This way you can be charging an extra battery while you are using the radio.

Ahhh. I had heard something about that but forgot. Thanks.
Here's pet peeve of mine.
All these radio's have ANI and PTT-ID encode.
Why don't any of them have Decode?

Are you using a different camera? Looks more vivid.
Same cameras, just that florescent green subject.
Hello Bob do you know the firmware version you have on your talkpod? I have the green one as well and mine has firmware 1.17. Thanks Tony N3VZO 73s
Mine is 1.19
@@K6UDAOk thanks thinking of getting another one but I want to make sure I can Expand it holding down #8 and ptt while powering up.
Very cool Bob! Airband always a nice feature.
The new BTech 5x3 radios come with a battery with USB-C charging. It looks like they will be selling the new battery separately starting soon.
That’s cool. Point for BTech.
Press & hold the green button to switch between vfo/memory right?
You managed to say "just the tip" with a straight face. I'm both impressed and disappointed at the same time, lol.
Howdo you find a ham band A36+? The one I got from an Amazon seller was GMRS only.
Is this an Abbree AR-730?
Crop dusters here use planes... had one across the street last week dusting the sugar beets... those pilots are NUTS!
how do you turn on airband
The good old UV-5R is the Crown Vic of radio's and needs to be become extinct.😅
Get in the chopper! Lol. Very cool.
Do you have any Airband antenna recommendations for this HT?
Seeing as you can’t transmit on those frequencies I think the standard rubber duck should work fine.
@@K6UDA I got a telescopic dual frequency antenna from Amazon for $18 and it receives a little bit better compared to the stock antenna.
Can this talk pod hear and transmit on airbands
It receives air-band well. It doesn't transmit on AM though.
@@K6UDA thanks

Looks like a decent intro radio. Crop dusting! Those power lines he was having to clear at one end of that field. Damn
Yep. And he’s just feet away.
"The Japanese" use Chinese components. Glad you got an Edison era plug.

Bit pricey for the new radio I buy my $20 baufeng radio.
For $10 I can buy the baofeng dmr radio.
