Wow, that is SO weird, because I, like thousands of other people, listen to several Police/Sheriff departments, several fire departments, multiple ambulance companies, dozens of city/county agencies, forest service, federal and state law enforcement, California Highway Patrol, CalFire, two airports and hundreds of businesses.. Pro tip: Just because you don't have much to listen to at your house, does not mean everyone else in the country or everyone with a better antenna than yours does not have anything to listen to. I'm sure you will find this very confusing so you might need a grownup or a person with at least an average IQ to explain it to you.
Most analog is not encrypted. Our sheriffs department still uses unencrypted P25. I've heard that a lot of the emergency crews in NC & TN are using unencrypted analog UHF & VHF.

Now I want one as well :) I left an excellent review, I still have my old scanner from Radio Shack 20 years old, Pro-97 1000 Ch Tripple Trunking, I works great still, but never works with batteries anymore, or even the rechargeable batteries. Great as long as it's plugged In, battery compartment is clean, no erosion, I should have someone fix it. I miss Radio Shack & Circuit City, those places were the best to get anything, but of course out of business long long ago. It sucks ordering stuff on Amazon, online, ext cause you have to deal with customer crappy service, sending stuff back, as in the days of Radio Shack & Circuit City was simple to just to take something back with the receipt of purchase. I'm drooling all over this new scanner myself. Lol Have a nice day
I have a SDS200 and have been enjoying it for the past 2 years. It has provided me with a lot of enjoyment while providing me with a great amount of local information. I have added the optional DMR software feature as a lot of the local agencies utilize this mode. Great video.
Another great video! I am a self admitted scanner dork and I enjoyed this video and completely agree its a great scanner. I have the handheld version the SDS100 and it works just like it should. As for the price, you really get what you pay for. There are less expensive models out there but the SDS series from Uniden work best on simulcast systems which you find in a majority of the trunked radio systems. Thanks for the good laughs!
"seems' to work does not mean it works good on simulcast systems. It seems that to listen to simulcast systems one needs a Harris. That and encryption is what has ruined scanning for many
Thanks Randy, great vid as always. I have two of these, one for the overlander and the other for home with a disc-cone antenna 40 some feet up. One of the great features of this radio is that it shows you the CTCSS and DCS tones when receiving. If you scan the GMRS bands it will show you what tones are used be it repeater or simplex. I use this with the ProScan PC software and just let it run for a day or two and I have a clear list of all the GMRS traffic and the codes being used on each channel.
I had this scanner for a few years and I have enjoyed listening to it, the main thing about this scanner is just learn the software, and you will see how much fun this scanner is. I also own the SDS100 portable too. best part of starting this scanner is just plug your zip code in and your all set to go. Enjoy the videos keep them comming.
I bought the 100(upgraded antenna to a Remtronix)a few years back and loved it so much I go the 200 for the house. It handles trunked systems amazingly. I highly reccomend both of them!
The best feature of the SDS 200 and portable SDS 100 is how well they handle what' called LSM (Linear Simulcast Modulation) on P25 trunked systems. If there are multiple sites transmitting on the same frequency the SDS 100/200 will receive them perfectly while the older P25 Phase-II scanners will have some trouble with dropouts. I would also strong recommend using ProScan rather than Uniden's Sentinel software for programming. Sentinel is a pain in the bitch to use, but necessary for firmware and database upgrades.
yep, my older Whistler Easy Scan has trouble with simulcast signals. Like they try to cancel each other out and you get a Hodge podge of stacked out-of-sync signals. I ordered the SDS 100 of this series of scanners from ZipScanners this week. The tracking number shows it made it from MI to my hometown in LA to be delivered tomorrow. I can't wait to get my hands on it. Now, I'm off to research how to talk with my hands. Cheers from Louisiana.
So now I have one of these to go along with my SDS100 portable. They are even better than I could have imagined. The only negatives for me are this. The LAN port needs to be on the back, not the front, and the fact it has a downward-firing speaker. Software wise, Uniden's native Sentinel software is atrocious. Proscan is an order of magnitude better, but there are many things that can only be done with Sentinel. Understanding the way the memory system works is incredibly unintuitive; it took me weeks to get everything exactly as I wanted, and it's still not perfect. But once it's programmed it's a dream to use. A sensitive receiver, great LSM reception for P25 trunking, a gorgeous bright full colour display, and I could go on. This one's a keeper!

It also scans GMRS freqs all the time so I can hear what folks are saying on the road and on GMRS repeaters in the area.

Hi Randy.....John here.....I was looking for video's on this scanner, which I own, and lo & behold...there you are.....I am really enjoying your videos. I also have the SDS-100 handheld and the BCD436 & 536 scanners. I did not know you can run Sentinel on a Mac. I will have to look into that, since I prefer Macs now over a common windows PC. Thanks for a simple start video on this scanner. The price doesn't bother me much since I can't afford any of the scanners so a price for such a nice looking scanner doesn't faze my dreaming of getting it. Would love to get one though. It's on my Amazon wish list.
You just helped me identify my #1 Christmas present for 2023 !!! (and I will ask the lovely Mrs. THOR to use your AWS link). My favorite line from today's video: "And, a Function Knob for Turning and Pushing..." Classic. :) Oh, and nice high-tech pointing device.
I love this scanner. I picked up the ProScan software as well so I can stream the audio to my desktop as well as setup a web server to stream it remotely (like to me phone)
My local police department used to have a scrambler. They used it for the important things like "how do you want your hamburger done?" and "the mayor is at the mall. His car was stolen."
I have the SDS200E EU version. Here the police have been encrypted since 2000/01 they use TETRA airwave, basically a semi phone system. Now they are moving to a new actually phone system (as are the ambulance and fire service) called ESN or the Emergency Services Network here in Scotland UK. Some useless
Envy. I bought the BCD325p2 a couple years ago and have spent dozens of hours manually programming it as there’s no software available. I did the DMR, NXDN unlocks, well worth it IMO.
@Rusty Riley you can use FreeScan with the 325p2 and 996p2 easily. It's obsolete now and won't work on the SDS or 436/536 scanners, however it will work beautifully with the 325. And it's free. For *better* software, the 325p2 will work with ProScan, but that's paid software, not free.
I have this scanner and it is amazing. I've only owned a few scanners but I've been using them since the early 80s. This one does an amazing job on digital trunked systems. The screen is very good and the Sentinel PC software works well however imperfect it may be. I'm going to give Proscan a try when I get a chance. I would like to be able to private stream.
I bought an SDR basically to listen to the whole spectrum. This SDS200 seems like a simpler way of doing the same thing. My SDR has a waterfall display, but the SDS200 has so many cool features. I like that the SDS200 can replay something if you just didn't catch it. and also the feature that will find new freq. while I sleep sounds nifty. And that it comes pre loaded with so many local freq. Really like the controlling it with the computer part. Thanks brother.
As a licensed GMRS operator for the past 3 days. My wife made sure my debit card studied as hard as it could for the $35 test. I can definitely and with authority say, you peeled the screen protector too fast. It is for this reason, I will be unsubscribing. WSDM860. 73.
Just kidding. I'd never unsubscribe from my favorite GMRS Queen. Fars, socks and flip flops, the slow sultry peeling of the screen plastic, the almost deliriously obsessive stroking of the latest chinesium radio gear. What's not to love!? Too much?
Excellent no nonsense review!! I'm 86 and starting listening to the PD and FD with a tunnelable radio in 1960, then a hand held Motorola crystal controlled and mobile radio along with all kinds of scanners up until they changed everything. I can afford this radio but at my age do I want to? I've had 60 years of fun. Over the years I've dealt with scrambling but not very much.I wonder how much will be scrambled in a small country county.
This scanner is really cool! I bought my first digital scanner ( Uniden ) a couple of years ago, I've always had a scanner running at my home for years because i am a firefighter and medic and it gives me a heads-up on things going on before the radio pager goes off. The only thing is they are really advanced and I've had a steep learning curve for this one compared to my old fashioned analog programmable scanners. Im also trying out a SDR to see if i can use it as a scanning receiver. Thanks for introducing this cool scanner . Expensive but for how much tech goes into them its worth it, also it should last a long time ( hopefully)
Yeah, I wish these things programmed the same way as my 396T did. That thing came in handy when we were still on VHF analog but our PDs were on the state P25 system.17 years as FF-II/Hazmat Tech here.
On my 436HP, It has "close call" mode which identifies nearby (powerful) transmissions. Turning OFF close call increased scanning speed significantly. No idea if that's relevant to this radio, but something to experiment with.
I have the Home Patrol 2…No complaints and worth every cent. Weather and also the Trunked EMS and Police/Sheriffs. Well worth buying it not getting the larger version.
Thanks Randy for doing this review. I have the portable SDS100 version. I’ve been patiently waiting and hoping for you to review this. Thank you. Right now I use it out of the box, but would love to see future videos that cover additional features and customization.
Thanks for the well-thought out, concise, informative, in depth, on point, no ifs-ands-or-buts review! I bought a scanner a few years ago, although analog, it quickly went into disuse because the local police went digital a few months after I purchased it. I've been looking for a top quality scanner that does digital and trunking as good as this scanner does. I'm just a normal guy like you, not one of those scanner dorks you talked about in this review.
Thank you so much for your straight forward vid... I watched about a dozen others and did not get my very simple newbie questions answered. You answered my questions and entertained me at the same time. You Sir are amazing... and your wife should consider raising your allowance.
Very cool. Now, I hope there will be a follow-up video on how it works with different antennas, in your Jeep, "Trunking channel's" and other stuff that I'm too lazy to research on my own. Thanks!
I just recently got the BCD436HP so I could eavesdrop on work. So far so good. Had to shell out another 60 bux for the DMR upgrade, but I can hear work and all the LEO and Fire goings ons around me. Where GMRS radio menus are pretty simple and easy, programming a scanner is an absolute pain in the dikk. I do like that the database is pretty much pre-programmed in these uniden units, makes it crazy easy when you are travelling. But when you are trying to get something specific is when it gets difficult.
I have both of these Units!!! It's good to be in the Loop, If you Can be in it!!! I know there are many areas in the country, Where it's only private party Chat for security Reasons !!! I'm very fortunate to live in a area of the country, Where you still can hear a nice level of broadcasting!!!
My uv5r is the best scanner money can buy because it's cheap and sort of functions...and I can buy like 25 of them for the cost of just one sds200.. the sds200 is a close 2nd place though.
The UV5R also comes in 10-packs so you can just leave them out and not care if the dog chews one up or one falls in the toilet, or gets thrown at the neighbor kid trying to steal your mail. It's OK. You can have spares ready to go.
I've been interested in this scanner for a long time. I'd get the sds100, though, because it will be used in numerous locations. Thanks for the overview.
I have been into scanners a long time. Over the years I have had a few scanners that were phenomenal. But never have had a scanner that picks up Police, fire, and other public services as good as the SDS200. Signals come in crystal clear, and most of time it will say on the screen which outfit is transmitting. There has NEVER been a base scanner as good as the sds200 for public service. Great review
Randy, AGAIN you Killed it!! I had absolutely No pressing interest in buying a scanner, BUT Now I have to Fight the wife for a credit card. Please send flowers or maybe just a card. THANK You from SWFL for this review! Intensive Care room # TBA
I don't mean this the wrong way but I had to wait until after my wife passed away before I could buy mine. What I mean is I never tried while she was alive because I knew she would never approve of a price tag like that. I was hospitalized in early 2020 and after two month of being in there I took the plunge and bought mine just to give me something to keep me busy. NOT SORRY! Best scanner I ever had!
I appreciate you and what you do I love the humor sarcasm gets me laughing all the time.I've actually purchased quite a few items because of your review.thank you
Bought this for the husband for Christmas… ( probably more for myself because of your video 😬) Because he (we) is clueless in the world of radio communications… upon excitingly opening his gift on Christmas morning , a look of utter bewilderment was frozen on his face . I however,(armed with the information of binge watching your videos)was practically bouncing in my seating with excitement! Unfortunately the enthusiasm wasn’t mutual and am returning it. BUT I was thinking of getting a couple of boafwang thingy radios and the there book by the guy who’s name isn’t his name you talked about on a few vids back . I was thinking that would be a better way to ease into a shtf community. Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated.
I'm pretty sure I've seen your hands in magazine adds...you must moisturize. I've had scanners growing up and always had one in my cruiser years ago, my how things have changed...big dollar item! Another great video!
The ONLY encytpted police channel in my area (Pittsburgh,PA) is the City of Pittsburgh's "SWAT" operations channel. Every other City of Pittsburgh police channel in "in the clear"- A Baofeng UV-5R can hear them. The surrounding suburbs don't encrypt ANYTHING. I can hear "SWAT" operations from the suburbs even with the lowest spec radio that can receive the 450-512Mhz FM band. (This includes most GMRS or HAM radios) LOL. The SDS200 looks like a really fun radio - Hmm Tax season's here... Dammit, I'm tempted.. 😳
@@jonathanstevey1748 The City of Pittsburgh has been using the same frequencies for DECADES (UHF in the 450-512 band), And the suburbs were actually VHF until the late 1990s! Allegheny County is one of the few places left where a Baofeng UV-5R could be the only "scanner" one needs for Police, Fire and EMS comms! Forget "trunked", "digital" or "encrypted" 800Mhz is not even needed. I'm glad that Pittsburgh (and the rest of Allegheny County) is stuck in the 1970s -Saves me money! LOL.
With all due respect for our Czar of GMRS Radio (Peace Be Upon You), I believe the decision to put the speaker on the bottom, instead of the top, was made to reduce dust ingress. It's a credit to Uniden that this is one of the few standout issues.
I have been a scanner user since the days of using crystals to select the frequencies. Although this is the most effective available, it is old in electronic years, and due to the addition of encryption in some area useless for listening to public service systems. No scanner can legally be sold to the public that can receive encrypted signals. Due to high cost of development, it is likely the last hobby scanner available.
It is expensive but I bought a Whistler TRX2 a couple years ago. It is almost as expensive but much lower quality (it died despite still having the plastic screen film on LOL). Sometimes it pays to spend just a little more the first time. Great video.
Believe it or not I still have an oldie moldy 80's Radio Shack Pro 94 trunking scanner that still works pretty good and am listening to it right now. LOL
Scanners do NOT work these days. ALL the channels are encrypted so these are useless unless ya wanna hear the weather.

I love this scanner. I picked up the ProScan software as well so I can stream the audio to my desktop as well as setup a web server to stream it remotely (like to me phone)
I waiting for you to say sanitation and when you said garbage trucks, i stood up and applauded.
The police in my area really don't broadcast anything of importance over the air. They use cell phones to talk about what they don't want you knowing.
I noticed the police also do that where we live
Oh no they don't that is a myth for sad hams...
I Like how the pencil is mangled even though someone sent him a sharpener a while ago. Clearly it’s deliberate to piss people off 😂
“What’s that sound?” - I LOVE YOUR CREATIVE HUMOR!!! 😂
Love it! I’ve had the handheld version (SDS100) on my wish list for a long time now.
Too much?
Be careful about sharing your callsign. They can be searched and your info seen. Also you can change your address to a PO box to conceal your address.
@@incubus_the_man thank you for that info.
I’m waiting on the boufwang version.
The UV-5R version no doubt..😂
Hey Randy. I hope you and your family are well!
@ L.A. Thanks for YOUR service! BE CAREFUL OUT THERE!
Yeah, I wish these things programmed the same way as my 396T did. That thing came in handy when we were still on VHF analog but our PDs were on the state P25 system.17 years as FF-II/Hazmat Tech here.
Just discovered this channel....this guy is great!
Refreshing....straight shooting!
Love it!!!!!
The SDS100 handles all the work. Update the database with the Uniden Sentinel software and put in your zip code where you are. It's that simple.
“Affiliate link below “ the best one yet
Thanks for the well-thought out, concise, informative, in depth, on point, no ifs-ands-or-buts review! I bought a scanner a few years ago, although analog, it quickly went into disuse because the local police went digital a few months after I purchased it. I've been looking for a top quality scanner that does digital and trunking as good as this scanner does. I'm just a normal guy like you, not one of those scanner dorks you talked about in this review.
Solid 11 seconds of enjoyment watching you peel off the screen protector.
finally, another Jeep video from you, been a long time
Yes Randy, more adventures in that JK
Technology has come a long way since I paid attention to scanners 40 years ago. Awesome!
Love your channel! You are a hoot!😂
Thanks!
I appreciate you Content, I get lot out of it and learn new information and most importantly smile and laugh.
Hilarious presentation .. Loved it and subscribed after90 seconds thank you..JR
Just got my GMRS radio License yesterday, and due to the videos I was able to set up my radio and get my first contact.
Just got my SDS200 Happy Saturday Jan 13 2024👍
A+ for the affiliate link theatrics
I have both of these Units!!! It's good to be in the Loop, If you Can be in it!!! I know there are many areas in the country, Where it's only private party Chat for security Reasons !!! I'm very fortunate to live in a area of the country, Where you still can hear a nice level of broadcasting!!!
I made a mistake and my wife heard it's price... sad day.
you and this guy made it sound like 2199
its 699 lol.
My uv5r is the best scanner money can buy because it's cheap and sort of functions...and I can buy like 25 of them for the cost of just one sds200.. the sds200 is a close 2nd place though.
Hell yeah brother. #fenggang
The UV5R also comes in 10-packs so you can just leave them out and not care if the dog chews one up or one falls in the toilet, or gets thrown at the neighbor kid trying to steal your mail. It's OK. You can have spares ready to go.
Does it have a Marine Band on it? - I like being alerted when Cruise ships are approaching Port? - Police Band? - Weather, etc.? uHf ?
I'm in the market for the scanner and I really like the built in recording. But my budget is under $200.
Depending on where you live and/or what you want to listen to, a $150-200 scanner might work very well for you.
@@Eddievoneddie13 I ended up getting a bc125at.
I've been interested in this scanner for a long time. I'd get the sds100, though, because it will be used in numerous locations. Thanks for the overview.
The SDS100 is the same but portable. I have one connected to a discone and get reports from many fars.
So there IS light at the end of the sentence- - - I mean tunnel.
Thank You for being my “hope” today, Jeff.
Randy is still my favorite.
Your attitude is quite refreshing!! Look forward to seeing more videos. I got my Uniden last year, still learning.
Thanks!
Thank YOU!
@@TheNotaRubicon thank you! Just bought one!
What's the Lowest frequencies and the highest Frequencies it can listen to Randy? 19:00 @NotaRubicon Productions
Uniden (Ocean).
😂😂😂
This Scanner Dork™ approves this video presentation.
For the best "affiliate link" segue to date... ROFLMAO!
Thank YOU!
I have one excellent scanner.my friend passed away and left it to me in a will algo with many gems radios and shortwave radio.
My pointless, stupid, comment.
I appreciate you and what you do I love the humor sarcasm gets me laughing all the time.I've actually purchased quite a few items because of your review.thank you
Get yerself a Uniden SDS200 Scanner here: amzn.to/3J1zQbM
This is the next thing I'm saving up for. This thing would be really fun to have and use. Thank you for all your videos, they have helped me a lot
I clicked the "affiliate link" and now my wife is mad. Magical.
Bought this for the husband for Christmas… ( probably more for myself because of your video 😬)
Because he (we) is clueless in the world of radio communications… upon excitingly opening his gift on Christmas morning , a look of utter bewilderment was frozen on his face .
Wait...what? The pinned comment is supposed to be where I go to find the stupid. How shall I survive without my daily dose of stupid??
yeah! Uniden is the best no ham radio I know of can bet them on scanning speed and the p25 decoder is a must have
I kant Affork Ths. :} pls pn thisk
I'm pretty sure I've seen your hands in magazine adds...you must moisturize. I've had scanners growing up and always had one in my cruiser years ago, my how things have changed...big dollar item! Another great video!
me n mi dog bob done liked dis here movie show so darned much we pushd the upthumbs 6,358 times thank ya buddy fur ur teachern us so good!
Every time I watch one of your videos i can't help but think of a Minions movie.
I agree with you. Ethernet, USB etc. ports should be on the rear.
Surprised Pittsburgh isn't encrypted because Ohio and wv pretty much all the little towns are now at least using phase 1.
I bought the handheld "little brother" version of this (SDS100), absolutely love it!! 🙂
Yes Randy It’s A Great Scanner I Have The Uniden Sds 100
The plug is on the front due to it not being used often and if you decide to use it you do not need to remove from mount to hook it up.
LOL
