  • I'm taking a quick first look at Rhino Linux, which just released it's first ISO. Rhino Linux is a rolling release Ubuntu-based distro that features a beautiful Xfce-based desktop. It also contains its own package manager wrapper that can install packages from apt, flatpak, snap or pacstall (an AUR-styled community repo for Ubuntu/Debian).

AJ Here. Desktop Lead for Rhino Linux.
So two key things I want to mention: You installed the Distrotube-dmenu package and had issues, unfortunately that package was not updated on Pacstall for a while but the lead developer of Pacstall seems to have sorted it now.
As for the Linux kernel version update. We actually shipped that recently and so when you started recording you likely didn’t have a package update, and then we shipped it and you got it immediately which is quite good timing 🎉
    Great video as always ❤
    Many thanks,

Really like what you are doing with this distro. The stale packages has always been a pain in Ubuntu and managing tons of ppa's is prone to error. If your pkg manager does a good job of maintaining stability, I would def. consider this over Arch or Fedora for my work machines.

The top panel in Xfce is used for worskpaces, so on small screens (i.e. laptops) the top bar is not enough for quick launch content: openned windows and busy workspaces eat it uo pretty quickly. There is also option at Xfce to automatically hide dock on mouse leave.

These sort of things excite me, but then once I get into their repos to try and install stuff and hit all sorts of problems, well then I'm not so excited anymore. The fact that the run launcher is Super+S makes a lot of sense to me, actually. That's what I use to open rofi.
    Why?
    1. S for Search. I'm searching for the app to launch
    2. It's on one side purposefully. I can do it easily with one hand which is useful if I'm doing something with the mouse but want to suddenly open a new window
One handed convenience cannot be understated. It's why I close windows with Super+X too. So much faster.

I regret that while this Linux version was created by serious developers, I will have to skip its installation on my computer. Let me explain.
Ubuntu is a distribution that is based on Debian. From my recent installation of Debian 12, which is the mother of a great many others, I have xfce therein.
I do use Debian's xfce and it works for me.
My using xfce is for my heavy use of terminal mode for writing and compiling code.
There are many good features provided by Rhino. If I have to reinstall Linux, following your presentation listing the interesting useful features you demonstrated I will install Rhino.
    Thanks DT

Why do Americans pronounce the word aesthetic, as "Ass Tet ick"? It's "Ass THet ick". The "th" is sounded like it would be in the word "Thin" or "Theft"

How do you pronounce the word 'asthma'? Do you pronounce the th sound? LOL. The canonical pronunciation of aesthetic does indeed have a th sound. But th after s is problematic in real speech, so you might hear alternation to a t sound. I believe such a pronunciation would be canonical for much of Irish English anyway. Why do you get uptight over such small and universal aspects of world Englishes?

We have a handful of reasons on why we chose XFCE as the base for Unicorn, if you wish to install another desktop environment you can install Rhino Linux and then run "pacstall -PI rhino-server-core" to remove the Unicorn Desktop environment, and then build from there.
Why do we ship Unicorn by default, and not provide other builds?
We have a specific vision for the desktop we want to push, and chose a base with the most foundations to provide a non-breaking experience on the devel branch.
Bug fixing every issue that occurs on every DE is way too much for our small dev team.
Packaging GNOME, KDE, etc to be compatible with our current customisations and core packaging, or creating alternative packaging for it, would be a pain.

Is this needed we already have opensuse tumbleweed as a super nice rolling release distribution, and we also have distributions like vanilla os which allows us to use the actual aur itself.

@@nikoraasu6929 Thank you for your comment. Although VanillaOS is a great distribution, and i'm on great terms with the developer, some people may prefer a non-immutable distribution. As for why, a lot of developers seem to love the idea of a rolling release Ubuntu, myself and Oren Klopfer included, and so we made it a reality.
