Bruh. This video is insane. So so good. I like themes but I can't analyze them on my own the way you do -- so I love hearing you dive deep into them. You've got the knack for sure, everything you said was spot on and rang true. Thank you for this!! And kudos too on your structure -- going through all the themes then ENDING with Karsa, and how he embodies ALL the themes -- just perfectly done man, I appreciate that bit of poetry The moment the really got me in this book is definitely the obvious one of Tavore killing Felisin -- easily top 10 tragic scenes in the series. And then the immediate act of compassion, as you say, from Pearl and Lostara Yil. Tragi but heartwarming lol You also just GET these books in a way most people don't. Like, most Malazan videos, even big fans will say at least couple things where I'm like "ehhhhh that's not what happened" or they're unsure about exactly what some event means or something. But not you!! Others off the top of my head who are this accurate are like... Philip Chase, AP Canavan (Critical Dragon), and Ruthan Badd. Everyone else can be shaky at times. But you're just as spot on as those 3!! Love your Malazan vids man, excited for MT whenever you get to it!
Really great analysis of the themes of this book. I loved House of Chains, and didn't have any issues with the ending. In fact HOC is one Malazan book in which I had no complaints or issues at all, and loved everything. It may not be as grand and epic as some of the others, but the human element of this book is so well done. The theme of Chains is also pretty prevalent throughout the book. Waiting for your take on Midnight Tides now.
I’m just on Memories of Ice on my first reread and loving Malazan more than ever because of it. I remember House of Chains being very much in the bottom third of my favourites on the first run through so I’m interested to hear your thoughts. I loved Karsa’s bit at the start, and Erikson’s decision to do it all as a chunk. I remember being very confused by the second half and not enjoying it nearly so much. I’ll save this video for a month’s time or so and see how I felt.
Also: it’s a great video about this book. Personally I never found any book in the series weak or disappointing not even first reading. This is awesome. I felt it started as an experiment of a Conan type character concept and nailed it how mirrors it to a modern society and not necessarily the modern society is the higher moral standard.

Man you breakdown of the theme of this book in the denial of vengeance was not something I had thought of but it’s incredibly apparent across the book
