Gopro refuses to sort out the glitches they have since the hero 4. Draining batteries and freezing without reason.
@@RazvanSecu freezing is mostly caused by crappy SD cards though.

Not only the sweet hub noise, but also the little snaps and crackles of twigs under tires gives a nice aural symphony on the Hero 7
Great review! One of the biggest reasons I upgraded from the 7 to the 8 was the lack of a cage. I could not deal with taking the wind cover off then the cage just to change a battery. That is worth it in my eyes!

Dude! Finally a video which makes up my mind on sticking with my Hero7. The battery incompatibility and the wiggle in the mount piece did it for me. I HATE swapping batteries in the Hero7 but i hate mounts that wiggle more. Thanks bud.
Nearly two years ago I worked out the chin mount go pro hack for my hero 5. I used the plastic stand thingy it came on in the box, chucked some holes in it and zip ties it to my helmet chin. I got the idea off the mc trailrider when he did a ride with bkxc and when they where setting up their gear I finally got a look of where his camera was mounted. Best spot ever since. Although I must say full face when trying to record epic long rides suck😅. Good videos as always Ben. Thanks

Nice comparison, I much preferred the audio on the Hero 8 and the stabilisation is very impressive, I feel the audio is the biggest difference sounding less muffled. My footage is all done on a old Hero 3 with no gimbal so after about a minuet of watching it induces vomiting, fun though. Thanks for your continued hard work on the channel greatly appreciated keep it up.

You put to rest a lingering question I’ve had the last few weeks! Excellent stuff as always. I’m not sure what will qualify to win that 7 (which would be a mint kit enhancement) but I’ll tell you this: that murkin you made for it reminded me of Chewbacca, which I think makes perfect sense as the GoPro really has become the racer’s copilot for learning tracks faster! [insert Wookiee rawr of approval] If I win the 7 (and hopefully the Wookie murkin), I’ll do an edit where i ride with a lego Chewy on my bars so you can see him and insert wookie noises during the sketchy bits. Maybe even some lazer pew-pews for good measure.

Interesting comment about the flip out mount. I was cautious about that too.
Broke my current mount when I crashed in Morzine this year with it on top of my head and it snapped the mount which meant I had to replace the whole cage (which no shop in Morzine had by the way!). I hope the new system is replaceable and cheaper!

I think sometimes the hyper smooth looks TOO smooth, and it looks like a drone flying down the trail. I kind of like seeing the bumps and the jumps etc, as long as it doesn’t make me cross eyed! 😂

Yah didn't talk about the horizon levelling feature in the new hypersmooth which is probably one of the most important features of getting the gopros to gimbal type stability. I look forward to your vid on the GoPro max as well because that horizon levelling feature is wicked good on it.
I have the 7 just got the 8. My channel is definitely not like all the other bike channels. If ya lived closer I pick your brain on how you do yours. I think you got the twist on riding videos the cathro vision and this kind. I'm learning on the videos on how to. And edit. Still learning and hope I can get better. Thanks for this video. Brilliant video Ben and I think it’ll end up being the go to video for people wanting to compare the two cameras. Kinda reminds me of Casey Neistat’s comparison on smart phone cameras! I think you missed a good chance to use these for night riding now it’s getting darker a lot quicker here in the U.K.

Loved the video ben but I believe the hero seven is still worth it, although it doesn't have the new features the hypersmooth is still amazing and the fact that you can't replace the lens cover on the hero eight is crazy stupid! And you can't forget the hubs it is amazing to hear the hubs because it makes it feel more like we are riding the bike. So if I get the camera i would be the happiest person alive. Thank you for the opportunity
Being able to save and change the setting profiles or capture presets and be able to choose them from a list quickly is a definite selling point to the 8. Way quicker than changing each setting individually when you want to change from helmet cam footage set up to linear b roll settings, hope you know about that!

Loved the honesty. I think the 8 is better for using as more of an easy to use cinematography camera with the new time lapse features and hypersmooth boost. I have been thinking about getting either the hero 7 or 8 but still don’t have the money. I am hoping to get one soon as it will hugely improve the videos on my channel. I currently use a 60$ spin off and even I find it unbearable. So I have been relying on my commentary to keep my viewers hooked.
Good video. Pretty sure M13 was one of the first to mount a camera on the helmet chin like 6/7 years ago
from 2:57 to 3:05 if you pause pretty much anywhere and look at the detail of the trees bark, his sleeves or the fork damping adjuster there is a big difference in detail. I cant actually see any more vibration from one to the other streaming but the clarity in that rough section paused is amazing.

I like the improvements on hyper smooth (low), it does work a little bit better in low light conditions now.
The 7 sounds more natural, the 8 is in comparison a bit dull, but in wind mode the 8 does a better job.
And did you checked the 100mbit Mode? In my comparison I noticed a more detailed picture, with the downside size, a day in the bike park = 90gb. Still worth it 🤘🏼
These were shot in 100mbit mode on the 8. I couldn't see any difference unless I zoomed in. For voice the the 8 is more full bodied but you do loose the higher pitch bike noises. Not sure if that's a blessing or not.

Yo Cathrovision, The main reason id get the 8 is for the mods, the microphone and light especially. By the way the lens is not replaceable :( even if you send it back to GoPro it would cost more than a new unit anyway, you can get screen protectors but yeah still annoying. You also get less accessories in the box. You can set new presets for favourite settings which actually seems super useful and you can customise onscreen shortcuts (in corners) to change WB, ISO, shutter speed, bit rate etc. nice... timewarp 2.0 with auto speed looks pretty interesting too. the HDR with SuperPhoto is also better but who really takes photos with a GoPro... great vid as always :P

Would have liked to know if the integrated mounts are made of plastic or metal? Curious to see if they would break in the long run. Also, i think the hero 8 lost the hdmi port right? You have to buy an addon for like 80 bucks if im not mistaken.
Also, tons of addons for the camera.(spot light, mic, case) can really make it look like a beast lol
Its a shame that they also changed the shape of the lense so filters can no longer fit. And for the no replaceable lense peoblem, i think you can buy a glasse cover for the lense for like 20$ but its still kind of a bad move from gopros part. They should try to make the lives of their customers easier. I guess removing the need for a case is kind of nice for youtubers.

I think GoPro Made the worst decision by, making the lens "not changeable", not compatible with old batteries, and the flip mounts. I am returning my gopro 8, and buying a hero 7 again...

Another downside of the mount directly to the GoPro rather than the cage means that it can break more easily. To me anything being user fixable is super important, especially if I'm gonna use it while biking

Ben Ben Benny Ben Ben, it is a sad day indeed when you miss out the most significant and, to some, surprising difference between these two stunning cameras. A difference which stems back through the mists of time to an age more simple and yet far more complicated. The year was 2018, Lord of the Rings was still very much the best film franchise in the world and Taylor Swift had shaken it off for the last time. Athletes from around this funny old ball we call earth were literally squirming with excitement to get their grubby little mitts on the new GoPro 7. Anyway, i forget where this is going but the dynamic range of the 8 is improved so less wash out between high contrast situations. :)
I've got hero 5 and it's plenty for what i need...At the time there was hero 5 or 6 for sale and everybody was bitching about 6.
I understand why Gopro is doing what they doing....adding to new model just few new or better features every year so people will buy ''new model''
It's Iphone strategy all over...to me shakey mounts on hero 8 is deal breaker,they will get that fixed on hero 9 don't worry, so you can guys spend another 500 euros on it every year...

Best use of the new Hero 8: mount it on the end of a long stick/pole and mount that pole to your back. The stabilization will make for a great 3rd person follow can without the weight of a gimbal on the end of a long stick hanging off you.

Great comparison Ben, back at it again! Wondering if new view is any better for capturing steep sections of trail and which would have the best footage without editing hassleee? Using raw footage?
The GoPro 8 looks great but I missed the old little Hero Session. For me, the best form-factor. They should make a Session 8, crazy stabilization in a smaller and lighter camera without touchscreen.
You can also use the 7 or 6 and stabilise in post using ReelSteady, even smoother stabilisation as the software knows what's coming and it still sort of works in low light, while GoPro just turns off.
Comparing how the two react when going from really dark woods to light and back again would be great :D

The only comparison we want to see is from Cathro! That was an awesome breakdown, we have been wondering how much the 8 is better as we love the 7, although it crashes all the time, which is a massive pain. Does the 8 need a GoPro microphone dongle like the 7 or can you plug the external mic straight in?
What I think you missed is that you can (at least in theory, there were some software issues, dunno if fixed) disable all the gopro sound processing that you don't need when running it with a wind cover, to get a lot clearer sound, other than that, apart from a bit improved stabilisation, they are almost identical, hero 7 sounds a bit less muffled imo though.
Really interested in your opinion of the 7 and 8 vs the new MAX. The Rylo has shown you get get gimbal level stabilization out of the 360 camera but lacked the quality that GoPro's usually have. Hopefully the MAX bridges that gap. Great video though. Cheers!
The live stream is now able to be streamed at 1080p on the hero 8 unlike the hero 7 black which is at 720p.
The video colouring has improved slightly on the hero 8 black which is able to give the GoPro a tiny bit more range with good quality on the video.
The is the extra microphone in the front of the camera to be able to capture more sound coming from he front of the GoPro as well as the back.
Hyper smooth 2.0 is available on every mode of the GoPro, this includes 240fps slo-mo.
There is a added live burst mode which enables you to take a short 3 second video and pick out the frame that you want as a photo.
As you may tell I would absolutely love the hero 7 black because at the moment I have a hero 4 session but I can’t afford a gimbal so the footage is really shaky and when I am racing it is really hard for me to see all of my lines on the video, so if I was able to win this I would be so thankful and take really good care of it and put it to good use.

I liked that you mentioned mechanical stabilization as some other action cameras do have this, but are absolute garbage in every other department. (The Sony Action 4k has mechanical stabilization, but the sheer size is enough to deter any MTB Riders). Could gopro make mechanical stabilization work while keeping the size down and image quality up? Also the mic on the Hero 8 must be better based on the size of wind muffs you used. The 7 had a full-on shag carpet while the 8 had some cat hair. Awesome vids!

Would you recommend a gopro to someone like myself who has started racing downhill as a use of viewing a track and possible areas I could be losing time? I was just asking this as I personally like to take videos and point out room for improvement and consistency. I love your videos and have watched for multiple years and will continue waiting for more.
Interesting comparisons. Did i miss details on weight difference? Weight on helmets etc can be quite noticeable especially if it wobbles a bit.
Plus I'd of liked to see a video of it mounted to the bike showing the Suspension action. A lot of vibrations and noise to deal with there.
I quite liked this comparison. Effectively saying for normal folk not doing high performance activities such as down hill MTB the hero 7 is more than good enough. At a cost difference of almost £100 I can’t see how the 8 would be worth it at the moment.
Only thing worth considering is the door on the 8 vs 7? A lot of issues seem to be getting raised around the hero 8 door?

You forgot the attachment you can put on the 8 such as the light and flip up screen ( very useful for vlogging)
