  • This guitar is in the best shape I have ever seen for a near 100 year old guitar. That should have been my first clue that it wasn't original finish. Regardless it is a beautiful guitar and I was happy to make it right again. Contact Mike at 308-920-1694 if you are interested in buying this guitar.

    Did you know CA glue stored in the refrigerator last about forever? CA will not cure without some humidity and warmth. One reason your breath helps cure faster, not air across the glue, but warmth and humidity from your breath. Work on radio control models on a film set in Iceland had to be done in tents with humidity and warmth to get the CA to set. I read about it in a model magazine decades ago and have kept my CA in the refrigerator since. The thin CA stays thin rather than thickening over time. Came from the R/C Hind helicopters in the movie "Firefox" with Clint Eastwood. I think it was an RC Models magazine article that first got me storing CA in a self defrosting refrigerator. It certainly works. Split my eyebrow into the bone and wanted to fix with my CA. The wife insisted on the ER where the doctor used CA! In Rescue we used CA as a field expedient for deep to surface sutures. Not about guitars, but info on glue is usually helpful and how you learn helps validate the statements.

    5-40 die is for .125" dia. rod. 3-48 die is for .093" diameter rod. 4-40 is the logical thread. The item that holds the die is a "die stock" and is important in that it controls the depth of cut in addition to being a handle. Beautiful guitar.

    Just acquired a 1915 Gibson L-1 in very similar condition (amazing!) and tailpiece with similar 'rot' problems. I was thinking, "I gotta replace that celluloid block..." and found your video. Well done! Mine has the trapeze wire cast completely into the celluloid (no nuts) but I'm going to design my replacement around the 'nutted' later version. I'm also getting rid of the pegs (terrible design) and will run the strings straight thru the tailpiece, similar to the later all metal trapeze tailpieces. No pegs: no divots in the top, no torqueing of the block, etc. Keep up the good work!

    Well I have seen quite a lot of guitars from the 40's and 50's and everyone of them looked like they were found in a desert (cracks in the sound board, scratches all over the place and the tops and back peeling off. So your eyes saw a perfect guitar that was older then those I mentioned that was in Perfect condition .. unless it in a voult with no aire it just does not happen. Still you made it sound perfect, Yhank you again for showing us what it and is not real ... with guitars.

    Jerry, the other thing that makes me question how much work has been done to the guitar over the years is the amount of glue on the sides of it when you showed us the interior with the camera. In any case, you have done another wonderful piece of work on this beautiful old instrument. You are keeping history alive with the craft you do.

    For what it's worth: L3 probably is a series designation. This is much like an L0 (or L1) ca. 1919 that I once owned. It had no trim except for the rosette, thus the low number. These early L's are archtop OVAL soundhole guitars. They have their own funky tone and sound great in the right hands. That tailpiece plastic probably is the same material that's in the finger rest. It's surprising that piece isn't deteriorated, too. I'm glad you're videoing this repair. Very neat old Gibson.

    @gchampi2 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Very nicely done. Regarding the finish, this looks very similar to an L3 I saw a while back that had a late-60's factory refinish. That guitar had a known history, having stayed in the same family, with photos dating back to the mid 20's, the refinish invoice, etc. I saw it for a much simpler job - worn out tuners. Easily sorted from the shop's "bits & bob's" drawer...

  • @jimpage601

    Wonderful work on a gorgeous Gibson. The tri-color sunburst on the top is what made me suspect a refinish. Lovely, though. Jerry, I never stepped on a Lego, but I stepped on a little LiteBrite plastic thing when my daughter was little, and I swear I favored that foot-heel for four months!!!

    Being a “Knife guy” I’ve had quite a bit of experience with old celluloid. Look up “celluloid off gassing”. The gasses given off during the decomposition attacks carbon steel with a vengeance and given enough time will also eat away at brass and then nickel silver. Old celluloid knives (or anything else) should be stored away from other items once they start to off gas.

    • @RAkers-tu1ey
      @RAkers-tu1ey 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That is a nice piece of true trivia. Celluloid is a very interesting material. If he wanted to prove the material, he could burn a few shavings... celluloid smells like camphor, tortoise shell smells like burning hair.

    I have to say that right off the bat I thought it had been re-finished, it looked too good to have survived a 100yrs without any scars, unless it had been left in it's case all that time. As you say, it IS a beautiful guitar and Mike will have no trouble finding a buyer. Your tailpiece work is just plain brilliant, buy ya know, that's what I've come to expect from you.

    I bought a roll of cork for $6 from Hobby Lobby that's over next to where the stuff for homemade coasters are. It's like an eighth of an inch thick and it has a sticky back so you just peel and stick. A lot of violin parts have that cork on it, I think that bridge might be a candidate for the same kind of cork as long as it won't melt into to the finish it would protect it more.

    Love your channel! I saw that it was a refinish right away, especially having watched you repair another L3 right before. The give away for me was the jet black that had been sprayed around the edges. It has a modern burst finish as opposed to the hand rubbed burst of old that were brown/black and not sprayed . Thanks for all the great videos, I've watched loads of them :)

      @@RosaStringWorks ... You work on so many different guitars from different time periods I'd imagine its hard to keep track .... and being colorblind I know is a hindrance ,my art teacher once asked me, " Your painting is really good but why did you make the grass brown?" lol ....

    I notice that where the tailpiece broke was where the steel strings were, so I wonder if the steel had some sort of reaction with that old plastic.
    I think people put too much into a guitar being refinished. My wife thinks I need a refinish on a daily basis. If we were talking an old artifact pulled out of a pyramid then no one would touch it, and also, no one would use it. People would just walk past and look at it. To my personal taste, if a refinish is done well and proper, it continues to protect the important thing... the wood. And it is useful as an instrument, looks good and adds years to its life. Patina = damage and rot. Not really on my priority list. But, that's me. I have a few things in my body I would like refinished, and I bet you would trade off that soreness in your hands. :p For my taste, make em all pretty.

    I've seen that you could use a black light (also known as UV light) to show if there's been some refinishing done to an old instrument. It glows differently and it can be really obvious. People do it when buying used guitars because it can show hidden repairs and refinishes. I wasn't sure if you already knew that, but perhaps it is useful to someone.

  • @jonahguitarguy

    Great looking old guitar Jerry. I think the difference in the peghead and body finish alone is enough evidence of a re-finish. I've also never understood why an improvement to finish should devalue an instrument. Like doing good fret work or a neck reset doesn't take away value unless it's a bad job. Your crack/ finish repair on the back turned out very nice👍 Oh and I was thinking maybe the original end piece thingy was straight but bowed with time but your replacement piece looks right at home. Again nice work brother.
