Just went through all of this this morning....Had to pay $30 to get my "archery safety" thing last week....did that...passed my test. Called into Plan my hunt and the girl was super helpful. I have 3 points now and probably still won't draw but Randy has it figured out!! It's SO complicated!!!
Howdy from Manitoba Randy. I see that you are still in a splint. I hope the surgery went well and that you will at least be able to Elk and Deer hunt this Fall.
Randy great video not sure u mentioned but I believe you can only have a total of 3 preference points for the general tag application, you cannot keep building points and if you don’t hunt before you accumulate the 3 points the state will take them off you and you will be at zero points again. Not sure you covered that but please correct me if I’m wrong, just another thing to add to the already complicated system. Thanks again for posting the video.
Thank you Randy for the great information. Do think next year 24 that Montana will go to picking a weapon and only the season and cutting down season length God's Blessings
I cannot believe how much the cost has gone up since I was last there, as much as I loved the Montana hunt experience, even if I could go back across the pond, I think I would have to look at other states. As for preference points, rubbing salt into the wounds after stumping up $1245.
Non-res bonus point question. At app time I select participate in bonus point system. If I’m right that point isn’t applied for the current draw like th preference point. Then suppose I draw the limited tag and points purged. I don’t think I get 1 bonus pt for the next year. So if I’m right did I just donate to MT FWP?
First year I haven't harvested a deer. Rough estimate is that bucks are down 80% in most of the valley areas due to every out of stater on 5 acre plots that moved out here (and there are A LOT) have shot far more animals than any previous year since the early settler days. Really sad to see folks on the secret spots that we fed our family with for many years.
I have 0 preference points right now. Are you telling me that if I were to buy one point with this years application I have a 0% chance of drawing a general elk tag?
so what is the state trust land permit I had to buy last year? I have a friend who lives there and told me I had to have this permit to access state trust lands. I looked online and sure enough there was a permit and it was $10
Should be to camp, hike, and access state lands although (at least for residents) i think we have one that allows hunting fishing and trapping access and one that does not
To me, it sounds like montana wants to incentive non-residents to not build points and stay at general entry rather than waiting for a better draw opportunity.
I don't think it's all that complicated here. Try CA and their point system. Totally sucks, but to be honest. It's very similar but way more expensive and less opportunity

Thanks for the honest info. on the process and game population.
You got it!

Can confirm, I lost my points that way, pretty frustrating.

The best application strategy for Montana is to move there early enough to be considered a resident before applying.
😂
Randy saying “lay the pipe to you” is hilarious to me
😂
A new saying on me!
Randy , how’s the club healing?
When does the harvest report for 2022 come out?
not accurate at all

Damn, I see you're injured. Hope all is well.
Randy is doing well!
Randy, what the heck did you do to your hand?

Come on out. Might as well shoot the last few fork horn mule deer bucks we have left.
Don’t waste your time there are only private elk and deer anymore around here. To many out of staters and predators.
Yup, Wyoming and Idaho are far better
I think California might be a good choice. Haha
(In reality if you get lucky enough to draw an elk tag there, you're in for a great hunt)
I beg to differ to many local rifle hunters that kill everything in sight still found them just gotta know how to hunt🤪
Not where I hunt in the 406...
There are better states to hunt. Stay away from MT.

I personally think Montana is easy to apply, and colorado is extremely difficult, as far as complexity in the application process

Maybe it is rocket science... must have took one to come up with that process.
You’re not wrong!
Randy, why wouldn’t you mess up your left hand? I thought you were smarter then that..😂
The title should be blah blah blah.
So why would a nonresident want to hunt Montana? Sounds confusing?
