- Too many of us have no flexibility in our bow arms or hands. We all know how incredibly restricting this is for our musicality, our expression and our progress. Let's make this the year we learn how to allow flexibility to come into our movements and leave that rigidity behind! Mary

Dear Mary, this video is incredible! It has instantaneously transformed my bowing!
I wanted to share four intentions I've started setting before playing, in case they help any of your other students!
1. Lead the bow with the forearm (or the wrist, sometimes it helps me to see it that way)
2. Keep the left shoulder down
3. Do not grip the neck of the violin
4. Place your fingers on the strings a millisecond before the bow moves (when changing notes, I'm always guilty of not co-ordinating my left and right hand well!)
Hello Elle! Well, I'm delighted you have already improved your bowing and I love the clear and helpful way you have set out your intentions before playing.
You are very clever to set things up this way for yourself, because often we pick up our violins and play without clear intentions.
We form our muscle memory in two ways. One is hit and miss and forms from muscle repetition.
The second way includes intention and when the mind and muscles work together the results are crystal clear.
Obviously awareness, close listening and knowledge give the best and fastest results for us violinists and it's very exciting when we discover that magic formula!
ps. I'm sure in no.4 you meant 'bow' rather than 'fingers'😊

Me encanta cómo expresas ese movimiento al mismo tiempo del violín "es casi como respirar"👏👏👏👏 Cada violinista profesional es diferente a cualquier otro, pero me suelen atraer más los que se dejan llevar físicamente por la obra que interpretan...durante unos minutos están en otro "mundo"... Hello Lola! My internet was off for a few days recently and somehow I missed your wonderful post! I think your methods for keeping rigidity at bay are very good - simple scales, open strings and a good old mirror are the medicine that keep many ills away from our playing...
Regarding your preference for very expressive violinists, I have always loved the Russian violinist Leonid Kogan, as I had records of him playing the Tchaikovsky, Mendelssohn and Mozart G major concertos when I was a girl, but hadn't seen him play - when I finally saw him on TH-cam I couldn't believe it; he was nothing like had imagined at all - he looked technical, cold, towering and unapproachable, but when I closed my eyes, there was 'my' Kogan back again!☺

@@lolamas3042 I agree, it's magical to absorb violinists from other times and discover people long forgotten who play like angels with their long slides and beautiful tender old fashioned phrasings. There's even something otherwordly about the hiss and wobbliness in the sound from very old recordings...I love it all, don't you?These players become so close to us this way.
