How To Play Legato Beautifully

  • The Beethoven extract is of course from the 'Pathetique' Sonata, not the 'Appassionata' as I said in the video...
    There are two modes of playing with legato; one is fitting in with the bowing and the other is fitting in with the fingering. We alternate between these modes to enhance the music above all. Let's explore it together...Mary

    Thank you so much Mary, I have a problem with smooth bowing, I find that my up bow is so abrupt, it is like something sticky on my bow & string half way I need to force to push it up, it causes a screaming tone, now I look at your playing give me lot of inspiration, please make more these videos with your explainning how & why it really help me as a beginner

    • @violinstudiowithmaryv
      @violinstudiowithmaryv  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Hello Alice! From your description it's probable that the problem comes from your elbow position on the up bow. The whole arm is involved in bowing, but sometimes the upper arm and elbow get left behind.
      This causes rigidity half way up. The answer is to examine your arm action from the front in a mirror and see if your upper arm and elbow look too low or too high on the up bow.
      Once you start noticing tensions and rigidity in your arm stand in front of a mirror, go to the middle of the bow, use just open strings and play slow strokes with your elbow in different positions - slowly...
      You will soon see that your arm is very likely 'locking up' just at the middle point. One you've identified where the rigidity is and relaxed it, try out longer and longer bows, keeping your upper arm and elbow relaxed and moving along with the bow. Be very patient with this and have plenty of breaks...
      It's very helpful to see good violinists playing slow pieces on TH-cam to notice what the action of all parts of the bow arm is when bowing strokes.
      I do hope you find the answer and start to make a nice sound in your bowing! Mary💗

    Another great video which has helped the penny drop again for me. I'm conscious of my clunky bow changes and this has really helped. A slip of the tongue - that Beethoven extract is in fact from the "pathetique." How gorgeous it sounds on the violin, has anyone done an arrangement for violin and piano, I wonder?

    • @violinstudiowithmaryv
      @violinstudiowithmaryv  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hello Christopher! Thank you very much, I'm delighted you liked the video!
      Thank you for the correction. I've altered the description, but I'm annoyed with myself for that slip...after all, I've been trying to play the second movement of the Pathetique on the piano for ages!😄
      I found an arrangement for violin and piano on TH-cam, but the piano is a bit clunky, so I'm still searching...Thanks again. Mary💗

      Hello Lola! I was at my lesson in college and my teacher was at a desk writing while I was struggling through my piece. I thought he wasn't listening. Then without looking up he said 'You don't know how to play legato; none of your notes are joined up.' I'll never forget the casual way he said it! I was rather devastated because I suddenly realised he was right. He did me a huge favour that day..and so I set off on my long quest...
      Our faithful companion, the violin. How lovely to come back home to - you're right, there is nothing better to experience! Thank you Lola for your wonderful spirit! Take care. Mary💗
