- Welcome to 'EAVY CONTRAST, a series where I will try to paint miniatures
as close as possible (to the best of my ability) to the 'Eavy Metal
paint jobs using Contrast Paints and Highlights.
And in this episode on the Cursed City models I'm painting the Deadwalker Zombies.

That flesh tone is....dead on... (I'll just see myself out now).
Lol
Love it! You Sir are the true King of Contrast on TH-cam! It's utterly amazing what you're able to pull of using just these colors.
Thanks 😘
Much appreciated
Juan, I am getting more and more envious of your wonderful skill set. You make all you do look so very easy. I know that it is not easy at all. It has taken years of practice. I desire to learn how you do this
Thanks!
I really love your contrast painting as a supplement to traditional painting. It provides me with a lot of inspiration to play on colors and mix different techniques
Thanks! I really appreciate it, I'm very glad I could help you get better with your painting. 😊
Looks fantastic. Love watching your vids - so relaxing.
Thanks mate 😘
Legend. That's all I can say... Every week is a treat, now I might just going to buy contrast to go with my classic paints. 👏 Can't wait for next weeks vid.
Thanks mate, much appreciated
Your brush strokes are sublime!
thanks!
Looking Amazing 👌🙂💚
Thanks mate 😘
Gracias guapo 😘
Thank you , Sensei Juan .
My pleasure 😘
Nice effect, great figure! Thanks Juan
Thank you for watching mate 😘
Gracias guapo
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures las que tú tienes hermoso!
Well speak of the devil. There's a quick and easy contrast hair segment right there! Thank you again oh wise one!
A pleasure as always 😘
Fantastic work with contrast! Thanks for sharing :-)
Thanks for watching 😘
been looking forward to watching this one since I saw the patreon pre release notification while I was on holiday!!
Hope it was worth the wait 😘
Fantastic, thanks!
Thank you for watching 😘
I look forward to seeing your tutorials every Friday 👍
Sorry to disappoint half of the time 😂
And the comedy that comes with them 😂😂
That's the best part for sure
Merci Beaucoup!
Ok, you're a magician. Instant sub
VIEWS FOR THE VIEWS GOD!
SUBS FOR THE THRONE OF THE ALGORITHM!
Amazing work, been looking forward to this one. What do you plan to tackle next from Cursed City?
no idea sorry, still deciding
It’s actually really neat that you did the hair the way you did, I’m currently working on my Lady Olynder and I did the hair in almost the exact same way, except I used Dorn Yellow instead :)
Awesome
Espectacular el tutorial. Gracias.
Gracias guapo
Un vídeo genial Juan!!! Me has dado ideas para unas banshees! 😉😉
Genial!
That's one of the best methods for painting dead flesh I have seen. I've been looking at horrible pictures from body farms to try and work out my own method, but I'm finding in this case real life doesn't translate to miniature painting very well...
No it really doesn't, you need to go into very exaggerated territory so it reads properly
Hola Juan!
I wish this video was out last week when I started painting my zombies..
I can try and develop time travel technology to release it earlier.
Just give me a minute or two
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures plz get on it! I want my zombies to look this good as well!
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures as this video didn't come out earlier I can only assume you failed in creating time travel technology
Time travel, eh? What a b*tch
Perfect zombie flesh.
Dead serious.
This looks amazing and I'll be painting along when I get to the cursed city box. Super chill vibes to paint along to.
Not sure if its been pointed out already or if there is anything you can do at this point but when doing the militarum green skin glaze the paint name on screen says magos purple still.
Thanks guys but sadly that cannot be changed anymore, I just missed it during the edit
Your painting with contrast reminds me of oil painting miniatures but the result is less glossy and tidier.
Also dries faster!
Thanks mate 😘
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures and doesn't require ladies' make up sponges for dabbing off the excess.
There's all benefits!
4:25 It looks like you put the Magos Purple banner up when you were glazing with Militarum Green.
Yes, it's already been pointed out, sadly there's very little I can do now.
Sorry for the possible, although very unlikely, confusion caused
Genial!
great!!
Thanks
I love those intros
Thanks mate, I will admit it's the part I'm most looking forward to record and edit.
Then reality hits me when I realise I have to edit the rest of the video 😂
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures the rest is super too
😘
It would be nice to see you make freehand, like the thorns on Biel-Tan's armour plates or tattoos
There ks some freehand scattered throughout the videos here and there. From the top of my head, you can see some on the Red Gobbo and the Iyanden Eldar
Great paint job! 😃
What are other combinations with Guilliman Flesh you Couleur recommend for Zombieflesh?
Any colour!
Militarum Green
Gryph-charger Grey
Nazdreg Yellow
Space Wolves Grey
Ultramarine Blue
The combinations are endless!
Nice work, as always. I'm curious to know if you tried Instant Colors of Scale75. I'd be interested to hear your opinion about that range in comparison to GW Contrast paints: Technical uses, benefits and drawbacks of either range.
I haven't and I have no plans to do so for the time being, sorry
Great as always Juan... Gorslav next 🤩 ?
No, it's either a hero or one of the triplets
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures perhaps a hero then... looking forward to seeing one of the triplets though... 👌🏼
Thanks, I honestly have no idea what I'm going to do until a couple days before recording it 😂
Love the tutorial and will be attempting this on my own zombies. I only have a couple of contrasts however, do they mix well with the shade paints? i.e athonian camo for militarum camo.
Cheers
Mmmmm, more or less but not really. Some are better than others, for example Reikland and Guilliman are identical in hue, Militarum and Athonian are close but athonian is more desaturated and dark but more diluted at the same time.
Hey, your work is amazing. How would you do a frozen skin tone in this method? Aethermatic and basc black?
Aethermatic and then Terradon Turquoise probably.
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Thanks!
I love this beautiful work bro! I have a quick question too, is the thinning result different if I thin down magos with contrast medium and not lahmien?
No, not at all, I just prefer the consistency Lahmian gives I've Contrast Medium for glazing
It's a L'Oréal zombie !!
🤣
(sorry for the ad)
She's FABULOUS!
Fantastic work. Can you explain to me what you said about the priming? I understood that you are spraying Grey Seer from the top, but did not get what else you were using for priming the miniature? It sounded like you were using something more than Grey Seer? Thanks.
Mechanicus Standard Grey all over and Greyseer from the top
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Thank you for your answer. Do you just spray them both on in one go, or do you let the first coat dry first? And do you know any good alternative to the Mechanicus standard grey spray? It is just sold out anywhere. Thanks.
You need to let the fort one dry before applying the second and no sorry, I don't know of any alternative myself but I'm sure that there's one for sure.
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Thanks for the quick answer. I went with a Vallejo Hobby Paint Spray Grey as alternative to Mechanicus Standard Grey. I hope it will work well. How long do you let the first coat dry, before applying the next spray? I can also see, that you used Chaos Black first, in some of the other videos. Why did you go away from this? Is it situational when you go with three layers and Chaos Black, or was it just not worth the effort? Thanks again :-)
Just not worth it for me, also produces a bit too harsh shadows.
Just let it dry till you can touch it, that's all.
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures si, me refería a Corax White. Gracias
Un placer poder ayudar.
Amazing video as always! I was just curious on where do you mix contrast or prepare the glazes. Is it on the wet palette as any other colour or do you use something different?
Wet palette as all the other paints
Thanks! I was wondering because Contrast paints do not seem to be made for mixing with water, while yours seem quite "well-behaved"
The thing is a well balanced wet palette shouldn't be introducing too much water into your paints, just maintaining the moisture. Also you are just mixing and using it for a layer, it doesn't have time to absorb much water
Makes a lot of sense, thanks again!
Happy to help
Increible !
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures muchas gracias !!
Question: why do you use Lahmian Medium with the Nagos Purple Contrast Colour and not Contrast Medium? Is there a specific reason/function for this? Thank you!
I just prefer the consistency it gives for glazing that's all
maybe the hair should be done with a glaze of zandry dust , because the yellow in that is there but not that prominent and then do they highlights as you did ....because realistically , on a dead person like that there wouldnt be any yellowblonde left...nevertheless awesome paintjob
Fair suggestion
She is gorgeous. Do you sometime take a step back and see how much you have progressed since you started the heavy contrast series. Thank you for all the tips and trick and showing us your colour mixes. By the way I’m still waiting for her phone number.
Thanks, I do actually but in my case it's more about video and audio production quality than painting.
Do you thin your contrast paints when you are not glazing? i.e. for that first initial skin with Gulliman and Basil?
if nothing is clearly stated, no.
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures thank you for the quick responses
GW really should commission you to bring your contrast series to their channel and to continue to show people how to paint with them. They do a shit job promoting contrast paints as it is currently.
No kidding... when I saw this I was certain that this was going to be a lot of really time consuming techniques, but it turns out that contrast paints do have their uses!
Thanks guys, much appreciated
Holy crap… the way you read that intro, sounds exactly like the singer from Rotting Christ. I think they are from Greece, is that where you’re from?
Nope, Spain
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures awesome… follow up question. What is your base coat color? Pure white primer? I’m starting these this weekend and I’m going to follow this tutorial 😀
@shawnfairbanks9339 it should be in the video. It's a zenithal of Mechanicus all over and Greyseer form the top
Sorry if you explained before but how do you make those bases? Thank you
There is a video about that in the Cursed City playlist or looking for How to Base - Cursed City
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures thank you!!
A ti guapo 😘
Did you dilute the flesh tone? Because mine was so brown…
Everything is detailed in the video. Are you using exact measurements? I do it in drops and that's the method I recommend
why are you using lahmian medium instead of contrast medium at the beginning?
Because I prefer it for glazing
I wander why the letters on the tombstone are in cyrilic scrypt)? Risen dead slavs in the Cursed City)?
The whole Cursed City game has an Eastern European theme to it, so it makes sense
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Thank you for the clarification!.... there's a little usage of cyrillic even in the Easten Europe though).... On the over hand this not a historical game :))
What do you mean???!!
Are you trying to say vampires and zombies are not historical??!!
My whole childhood is ruined
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Non-historical in cyrillic scrypt ascpect only 😂
Pffff
I was panicking for a bit there
What is the ratio of Lam Medium for the Glazing please?
There is no ratio, that's why I show the consistency on my thumb. You will have to learn that by feel.
Sorry
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures No worries I am learning to glaze at the moment. Maybe I am thinning too much but I get almost like a water mark circle when I apply it. Maybe no pigment left
What's the background music? I need this song to help me paint my miniatures!
it's from the TH-cam audio library. Sorry I can't remember the name.
Anyone notice that these zombies would have been buried face down to be staked like that?.. a final indignity.. apart from the staking.
It's actually a common practice during medieval Europe, specially in places were there was superstitions surrounding the dead coming back from the grave. That way if they do they would be digging their way down.
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures oh wow didnt know that :D ..thought it was just the GW sculpters thinking a coffin lid in the face wouldnt do well.
p.s.: nice paint job ;)
Thanks 😊
Quality painting and quality shitposting...noice!
Thank?
Yes, I'm going to go with thanks just in case.
