    Rich, you should get Rhik Samadder on! He does the excellent "Inspect a gadget" columns in the Guardian, which are just solid walls of puns, he should be good on this. Also, Marina Hyde off the Guardian is very funny, as might Barney Ronay but I'm less sure about that one because he mainly writes about football and stuff. Yeah, I read the Guardian, PRETTY IMPRESSIVE RIGHT? Matthew Berry would, I think, be a fantastic guest. Also there's a great black comedy on iPlayer called Fleabag, starring and created by Phoebe Waller-Bridge. She'd almost certainly be great. Finally, there are the obvious ones - I think some have refused in the past but can't remember which ones - Chris Morris, Richard Ayoade, Paul Foot.

    Did you have to do 113 of these things before you realized your channel would be more popular if the name of the guest came first in the title?. I'm looking through the back titles and all I see is "Richard Herring's Leicester Square Theatre Podcast - with...." and the guest's name is out of sight.

    Books are just as prone to error as other media. The trick is to be aware of the quality and accuracy of the stuff you absorb. I read a book about how to protect yourself from alien abduction, and another about the location of Atlantis and how all ancient sites are linked in a global map of the stars... and they were really fun to read.
    But clearly a pile of bollocks.
    It doesn't matter whether you get your information from a book, or a website or TV show... what is important is being able to absorb it in defined stages... suggestions and ideas, to serious claims, to reasonable hypotheses and then to evidence-supported ideas and then to facts and finally full explanatory theories.
    Each stage requiring careful and considered thought.

    @33:40 "You don't give your people the vote on what not even the experts don't understand" So who then does decide? If the so called experts don't know, then why is better to listen to them?

    • @Herring1967
      @Herring1967  8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      so better to give it to people who don't have the slightest fucking clue? Weird logic.

    • @christaylor2959
      @christaylor2959 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      But both sides had experts,what you are really arguing is you should listen to the people and their experts if their point of view agrees with your own.

    • @damaraba
      @damaraba 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You could always take time for the qualified people to actually do research and then decide when the stats are in and not on a date that's useful for election cycle and while experts are kept busy trying to find aspects that could be alluring for the voters instead of modeling the potential outcomes.

      Also, since most physicists don't really know _why_ particles have mass, the Large Hadron Collider should be staffed by means of a raffle.

    • @christaylor2959
      @christaylor2959 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not saying all experts in all fields should be ignored. If i get sick I will consult a doctor. If I need legal advice I will consult a lawyer etc. However, in the Brerxit matter that was the subject Tim Minchin was talking about. It is a subjective matter unlike particle physics. Therefore, he like all of us are prone to confirmation bias and as such will choose the opinion that reinforces his own.
      Do you really think Tim Minchin would be saying we should not give the choice to the people if the people's choice agreed with his own.

    Tim has made a confusion between education and morality. If we favour the opinion of the 'educated' we forget that they have may have another agenda than the 'good of society' - They may be trying to make money. There exists a problem of private education in our country leading to an 'old boys network' that make up our bourgeoise favouring their own 'educated' voices. Indeed, the costs of education and university in this country now preclude working class intellectuals. It is also true that a lot of very average students do very well from the private education system and a lot of very intelligent working class kids are failed by the state education that the Elites (fail to) provide. I went to a grammar school and the principal of academic selection regardless of class (no fees) is a sensible one but still, 80% of the kids were from posh families and had gone to posh prep schools to enhance their chances of passing the 11+. It sounds nice to say 'favour the educated opinions' but this assumes the 'educated' - often simply the elites, are morally appropriate and responsible. They are not. We should favour the honest, the true and the charitable. We should favour those with decent values, those who are kind and selfless. Our leaders should have backgrounds in nursing or education, volunteering and charity work. Then the most educated of the honest can be listened to.

    • @BatteryExhausted
      @BatteryExhausted 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also the elites teach their children the values that lead to social destruction. Selfishness, greed and pride are not virtues. You can't buy good manners.
