    I love fight scenes like this that portray a sense of actual realism. Because the most realistic fight scenes aren't realistic because of brutality, they're real because of their awkwardness and messiness, sometimes to an even comedic effect. There's a bunch of great examples like this, the Oldboy hallway fight, and the Atomic Blonde stairwell fight. But I think the very best example is the house fight in Season 2 Episode 5 of Barry.

      I guess the only unrealistic thing in this entire fight is those guys thinking they had a chance in round 2... I mean, any rational human being would have bailed the hell out the moment Hutch took a gun out, emptied it, and said "I'm gonna f you up". I know I would haha

    • @Ashar121
      @Ashar121 2 ปีที่แล้ว +53

      Exactly this. In the behind the scenes, I think the director even references Hutch's increasing efficiency with each fight sequence. Here he is rusty and it shows. He takes straight hits in a 1 v 1 at the start, the attackers get in some really good hits from behind, his movement is slow and un-coordinated and he seems to be having difficulty facing multiple opponents at once since he takes one out but then his next motion is disjointed and delayed and he gets attacked successfully. But he gains some momentum later on after he comes back in the bus. That's when the music picks up and he starts being more fluid in the movement and deadliness of each attack. He starts to move effortlessly between all 5 of them and dispatching them with the knife easily. You can clearly see his mind waking up.
      Later when the Russians come to his house, you can tell he's woken up. His movement is precise, his use of his environment is deadly. His tactical approach to dividing and conquering the invaders is much more effective. He is in and out of each engagement quickly. But he is still overwhelmed, partially due to the stair railing giving way.
      By the time he goes to see the Russian at the club, he's all the way back. You can see it on his face, in his eyes and the way he talks. He's now having fun with it and hoping that the Russians will keep coming at him so he can keep killing them.

    • @FiveN9ne
      @FiveN9ne 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's the part that i didn't like to be honest. He was portrayed in the movie as like the most ultimate badass assassin dude who doesn't exist. Then he barely survived and took straight shots to the face from random dudes. That doesn't hold water for me. Someone with that kinda training and skills doesn't just get "rusty" to the point of being almost beat to death by nobodies. Just to be clear, i'm not against the realistic fight scenes where the guy takes damage and doesn't just outright demolish them in 3 seconds like in some other movies. My problem is the hype that they gave him. If they didn't describe him as the ultimate killing machine or whatever beforehand, the fight would have been easier to buy.

      even at the highest levels of performance the human body has limits & though his mind may (mostly) retain the training his muscles won't - he won't be as fast or as strong, or as coordinated as he expects to be & a lot of his performance increase in this film is (i'd say) due to him learning to account for that. It's beyond refreshing to see an action/martial arts movie where the hero isn't practically invulnerable. I feel this scene is also good at showing that even if they're untrained brawlers, multiple opponents are still dangerous. Even though the hero character won the fight, he clearly took some serious damage in the process, and few are ever that skilled or that lucky to survive an aggressive group attack.
    I think one of the reasons he did win was because it was in an enclosed area where he could sort of funnel them out a bit in the sense that he couldn't be attacked by more than two or so at a time max. If it were on an open area such as a street or parking lot, he would've been a lot more likely to have gotten himself killed.
    When he went back to finish them off, his getting back on the bus was the best approach, seeing to it that his opponents were still being kept in an area where their strength in numbers wasn't as big of a factor. This video even has examples of someone evening the odds a bit by using aspects of his environment to his advantage, ergo the improvised weaponry.
    They didn't overchoreograph the various techniques used, they made the fight seem a bit more believable and had various points that showed a high fight IQ in addition to skill. This is one of the best fight scenes I've seen in years given the way it was so well thought out.

    He kept it hand to hand until the one opponent brought the knife into play. Then it became no holds barred, very brutal.. Getting back on the bus is an intimidation factor. The point here is, yes you should expect you are going to get hurt in this fight, maybe even killed, but you can still mess the other people up just as bad, and a bully never expects that..

      @Man with hair He was angry about his life at that point in the movie. He and his wife were distant. His financial life wasn't where he wanted it to be. His kids didn't respect him. There was a home invasion and he let the people go and everyone basically called him a coward or pulled the "if I was in that situation you know what I would have done...." So he finally chased down the two people that robbed his home to get revenge and realized that they were nobodies with a baby to feed and his morals wouldn't let him do anything. So he had nowhere to vent his anger at everything. And then those guys got on the bus and answered his prayers. He wanted that fight. And that's why he went back in for round 2.

Watching that entire clip gave me John Wick flashbacks in every way, and I love it.

    Gritty, dark, bloody, messy. This is how a street fight looks like: No rules, no referee, no time limit. You never know how long it's gonna last: 30 seconds or 6 minutes? The top quality of fighters btw is not necessarily how hard or how fast you can hit (though that's necessary, too) but how hard you can GET hit & still keep going (quoting Rocky here),. And of course how LONG you can fight. It's also about how much pain / injury you are willing to inflict on your opponent(s). In other words: Mindset, resilience & stamina.
    The scene is a little over the top, but in general it captures all these things very well. Well done. And good commentary.

    • @harpiyon
      @harpiyon 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@maxmiliancady8174 6 min. is indeed rather uncommon, but it might happen, esp. with multiple attackers or if grappling is involved (and that happens more often than you'd think). Some street fights are even longer, it's crazy.
      You ever grappled with someone? If so, you probably know how exhausting that is. You need a different type of stamina than, say, punching & kicking. And yet, if the other is also a capable grappler, it might take you minutes to get him into submission.
      My point was: On the street, you never know how long you'll need to fight. So better train to be prepared for a long, exhausting fight that involves both striking & grappling. And if the fight is rather short (which it thankfully is in most cases), and you get out of it alive, be glad about it. That was my point.

I turned away thinking it was done and he gave me a nice liver shot. All the years of being bullied culminated in me spinning around (at which time HE had turned away) and letting him have it in the back of the head. I broke my hand. But I never heard back from the guy. Didn't stop the other bullies but in hindsight, I was the better man. I never hit anyone again. Not because of my hand, but because I knew I could seriously hurt someone if I did. At 6'4" 300lbs, I'm a gentle giant. But I think this movie shows what all the bullied wish were possible. When he went back inside the bus I thought he was going to duck tape the gas pedal and jump out. Lol

    A fun little detail about this scene: There's only background music before Round 1 and during Round 2, but all of Round 1 is just quiet in the background apart from fighting sounds. Just something that makes this fight even cooler
