I was like 13 at the time this game came out. I used some of the money I made from working with my dad over that summer to buy this game because the cover looked pretty interesting to me. I'm not gonna lie, I got kinda freaked out by it after maybe like a few minutes into the game. So I put the game down and played other games and kinda forgot about it. A week before winter break, I ended up getting suspended for two weeks. In total, I had four weeks off of school. Seeing that I had so much free time, I started playing and beating a good amount of previously unfinished games including this one. After starting a new game I got hooked and realized this game was way better than what I was expecting. Tons of lore, great gameplay and awesome environments. I couldn't put it down. I even beat the game with all the endings in every difficulty. Thanks for reviewing this game. It became one of my favorite games and definitely needs more spotlight on it for potentially a remake/re-imagining or remaster.

I remember the flashing rorschach images were caused by having a full insanity meter for too long. I generally just kept it a little from full while traveling.
Couple of notes on the gameplay side of things; 1st person mode is actually pretty good in the early game, since melee animations are faster, and Marksmen take more damage from melee then they do bullets. The mounted machineguns (which are Browning M2s, not miniguns) makes the encounter in the bunker a absolute breeze, and would've greatly helped with the encounter on the Bluff. Though admittedly, I can't remember if it can rotate 180 degrees.) The M2 in the final encounter is meant to be used in the first phase. And being that it's placed high up, the beast hilariously wouldn't even be able to get to you. There's actually a unlockable flamethrower that you can put together after the asylum. Doesn't do shit against Inferna -, as you might expect - but melts everything else. Especially Festers, since them being on fire stops the rats from spawning. You can kill Burrowers by throwing a explosive down their holes. Even flashbangs. Super handy in conserving ammo. Also, I'm not 100% on this one, but I think the flashing hallucinations are tied to how often you use the insanity state. The longer you go without, the more they pop up. And yes, please cover the sequel. :D
Also with the infamous shower level it’s actually not that bad. All you have to do is turn off each faucet thing so the mainliners stop spawning. And also you can get rid of the fire in the middle of the doorway by turning on the sink right next to it. It’s stuffed with something so the water overflows and puts out the fire. or I think you can shoot the fire extinguisher that’s also next to it.
Also those annoying images that keep flashing over the screen only pop up when your insanity meter is full. If you transform more often and let it drain, those annoying flashes go away completely. I love these games but they were a little obtuse at times with explaining how things worked

Great review man! Really enjoyed the humor you added to your commentary. I found your video through the algorithm, so hopefully this gets the views it really deserves.
1:32:00 If I remember correctly, an offset for the pills being less effective is that your rage meter filled faster and your beast form was more effective. You did more damage with each hit and would get special abilities with it the more evil you were. In the good route, you really do depend on the weapons, but on an evil route you're playing it wrong if you aren't going beast mode for the harder parts of the game (and as frequently as possible in between).
finally an actual retrospective on my belvood childhood horor game i used to play this at the age of 9-10 and i f*ing loved it thank you kinnd stranger named Atlasinuu
On first person mode... When you're in the showers and fighting Hermes, you don't get the animation for turning valves so it goes faster. Those are the only places to my recollection where it's useful, but GOD is it useful there.
I love that more and more people are slowly coming back to this game. I got it on release and immediately fell in love with it. I was a bit disappointed in the second game as it largely seemed like it was retreading ground that was already covered in the first game. I feel it could have been a better experience if they had taken it in a slightly different direction. Gameplay on the second game was also slightly worse. The Suffering is still in my top 20 games today.
Youre crazy ties that bind has a more coherent story and the gameplay was amazing. I play both at least 2x a year but I always play in fps mode maybe thats why i love it so much. I have been playing these games since they released. Still have a disc copy of ties that bind that i stole from blockbuster in highschool 😆
This game is more underated and needs a part 3 the cool thing there is a video on extra options about eastern state prison in Philadelphia PA which shutdown now and has a spooky ghost tail around Halloween also I like that this game takes place on a made up urban legend island off the coast of Baltimore Maryland
If you want to answers to why Torque killed or didn't kill his family, you'll have to play through the sequel. Decent enough but not as good as the first
If I were to fix the neutral ending, I’d made all three an accident. We can leave the wife’s death as it is, but for the kids, I could see the older brother grab the younger and run out of the house. Protag runs after them…shouts to get their attention, and as they turn towards him mid-sprint they get hit by a passing truck. Would make him justifiably guilty about what happened, and basically end the game with him being the tragic protagonist he alluded to being. Not good…not bad…just unlucky.
At 26:24 the fire can be put out. if you look next to the fire there are sinks, and one has a rag stuffed in the drain. If you turn on the water it overflows and puts out the fire.
5:36 it does though, both 3rd and 1st person have their advantages and disadvantages, you don't waste time on interactive animations in 1st person, but you can't dodgeroll in 1st person either, also in 3rd person you have better spacial awareness, and you can animation cancel your reload with a dodgeroll, the quirk is that the gun still reloads, so this is a great method of speeding up the reload time
@@atlasinuu5913 yeah the game has a ton of hidden features, pointless but funny ones, like being able to turn your flashlight on and off while a cutscene is playing, and useful ones, like being able to kill a Burrower enemy if you throw any throwable weapon in the whole it came out of (flashbang included) there is a video that actually lists all these funny/useful/interesting features
Sorry I keep commenting but in regards to 1:00:48 , I’ve also been a little confused what this mysterious force was exactly. Torque actually seems to be the catalyst for these creatures erupting out of hell or wherever they come from. In the second game I remember someone literally brings it up. This seems to imply that whatever mysterious force is at play here, it is attracted to people that are capable of and easily tempted to do evil things. I highly recommend you watch Max Derrats video on the suffering, it goes over this kind of stuff a little bit
Never apologize for commenting! I appreciate all the extra info you gave, wish I had known some of it before playing haha! I had hoped the force behind the creatures would be explored more in the sequel, but it’s looking like it’s still left a mystery.
This is such an amazing and underrated game. I played it when it first came out like it was a religion as well as obscure and so many more amazing horror games.
In the shower segment, you can shut off the showers to stop the mainliners from spawning. The escort mission with the cowardly guard, you can actually run through that entire section and kill all the enemies before talking to the guard and escorting him. If i were to rewrite the game's endings, i would have left the deaths of torque's family more ambiguous at the beginning, just that torque is implicated in their deaths then, i would have left the good/evil endings mostly the same but in the neutral ending, i would have wrote it as torque's eldest son being more mentally affected by torque's absence in his life as well dealing with torque's anger issues. Then as he over hears his parents arguing again, the boy snaps, blacking out and attacking his little brother in anger, the same anger he learned from watching torque. Then, torque could accidentally kill his wife by shoving her during their argument. Afterwards, he realizes what he's done, checks on the boys to find one of them dead, and the other clearly disturbed. Torque tries to revive his younger son, while the eldest throws himself out the window as the realization of what he did sinks in. Torque then blacks out in shock, having him forget the events and doubting what happened. Although i prefer the good ending of the game, i do agree it is not very well fleshed out so what i would have done differently is sprinkled in some info here and there of the colonel as the character made good aligned choices. I really think this game has a lot of really good ideas and just lack the right amount of direction and story telling. Overall, this is one of my favorite horror games from my youth and i think it is well over due for a remake or remaster, so long as it is done so by the right people. *Also, the fully voice acted area and monster lore in the hand book was probably my favorite part of this game. More games should do this.
Yes my good sir keep making 1-2 hour long review/synopsis/retrospective videos for me to fall asleep to, you’ll gain more traction if you do videos on obscure and untranslated games as well and ESPECIALLY games people forgot about and even games people don’t cover like: rival schools, sin and punishment, deSPIRIA, darkstalkers, ronde, daiva story, Ys, etc
When I was a kid, everyone was interested in Resident Evil or Silent Hill. Meanwhile, I was busy playing the Suffering. It was soo much funner than any other action horror at the time. I really hope there's a planned remaster or remake now that the games have been removed from GOG and are officially abandoned.
1:56:12 if there is enough things to talk about, I consider long videos way better than a sub 30 minute video, you can get your point across way more detailed, and go through all the layers the game has to offer
This game was so amazing whwn it came out. I was really into silent hill as a kid( i still am). One of the best psychological horror made to date. Not to mention you can switch between 1st and 3rd person😮😊
Dang. Nostalgia. I bought this series for a partner long, long ago because it sounded interesting but I can't play horror games alone. I made them play it for me. LOL.

Im not sure why people don't like action in The Suffering and ties that bind (sequel) It pretty much the thing that make it stand alone and make it unique than silent hill and resident evil
Why does this have kess then 10k views? A crime, an absolute crime. Good work, more like this please. Edit: Yes, please do the sequel, and i don't care if its 10 hours.
That sucks to hear, man. I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy it, but to be clear, I never said the game was “hidden.” In fact, I said the opposite within the first 5 minutes of the video, and even mentioned that more and more people HAVE covered this game within the past couple of years. I also want it to be clear that I have never, in any horror related video I have ever created, based my work off of another’s content. I have not watched a single video on The Suffering, as that would defeat the point of my blind playthrough. All I do here is create videos on games/topics I find interesting. I put a TON of effort into these projects, and it sucks to see them be disregarded so easily. I still appreciate your comment though, and I’ll try to improve in the future!

Absolutely love long video!
5:36 it does though, both 3rd and 1st person have their advantages and disadvantages, you don't waste time on interactive animations in 1st person, but you can't dodgeroll in 1st person either, also in 3rd person you have better spacial awareness, and you can animation cancel your reload with a dodgeroll, the quirk is that the gun still reloads, so this is a great method of speeding up the reload time
Oh wow, I can imagine combining some of those tricks would be pretty good for speed running!
@@atlasinuu5913 yeah the game has a ton of hidden features, pointless but funny ones, like being able to turn your flashlight on and off while a cutscene is playing, and useful ones, like being able to kill a Burrower enemy if you throw any throwable weapon in the whole it came out of (flashbang included)
there is a video that actually lists all these funny/useful/interesting features
Anyone who acknowledges the underrated greatness of this game is OK in my book.
They should remake this.
Suffering and Condemned... where the remakes at?
The Suffering and Ties that Bind are some of my favorite games!. So underrated.
Yes my good sir keep making 1-2 hour long review/synopsis/retrospective videos for me to fall asleep to,
you’ll gain more traction if you do videos on obscure and untranslated games as well and ESPECIALLY games people forgot about and even games people don’t cover like:
rival schools, sin and punishment, deSPIRIA, darkstalkers, ronde, daiva story, Ys, etc
Oh hell yeah
1:56:12 if there is enough things to talk about, I consider long videos way better than a sub 30 minute video, you can get your point across way more detailed, and go through all the layers the game has to offer
This game was so amazing whwn it came out. I was really into silent hill as a kid( i still am). One of the best psychological horror made to date. Not to mention you can switch between 1st and 3rd person😮😊
There's a second game called the sufering 2: ties that bind
This is a cult classic game , it needs a overhaul and remake
This game and it's Sequel are the only reason besides Resident Evil I even have a ps2 ❤🎉
Dang. Nostalgia. I bought this series for a partner long, long ago because it sounded interesting but I can't play horror games alone. I made them play it for me. LOL.
That’s the best way to play horror games though! My partner is terrified of horror stuff and watches me play all the time haha
@@atlasinuu5913 Pleeeease do the second one! This was such a great nostalgia trip. And I love long videos so much.
6:19 I really don’t like survival game mechanics but I love horror so I have the opposite issue when making videos on horror games lol
I gotta ask, what’s your favorite horror game? It’s gotta be hard to find good stuff while not enjoying survival horror, haha
@@atlasinuu5913 fear 2 is top tier, also if you play RE village with the dlc that gives you the rocket gun it makes inventory management obsolete. I have videos on both of those games you should check out! There is also games like doom 3, dusk, dread Templar and forgive me father which utilizes a horror atmosphere in interesting ways.
Oh, nice! I’ll definitely check your stuff out some time :)
I’ve heard good stuff about a lot of these games! Such an interesting way to play RE Village, haha
@@atlasinuu5913 hell yeah! I appreciate it! I am a heavy on the action type of gamer and when I saw I could play Village with a light saber and rocket gun it got my money
I wonder, what’s your opinion on the more action heavy RE games? Are games like RE5 and 6 up your alley, or are they too far gone from the source material for your liking?
Im not sure why people don't like action in The Suffering and ties that bind (sequel)
It pretty much the thing that make it stand alone and make it unique than silent hill and resident evil
I still have this and the sequel
Love this game.❤
this game could never come out today
Why does this have kess then 10k views? A crime, an absolute crime. Good work, more like this please.
Edit: Yes, please do the sequel, and i don't care if its 10 hours.
I’m glad you enjoyed the video! Thanks for the kind words, it means a lot :)
@@AceIsGaming What a spiteful, mean way to say that. I can only hope that you didn't understand how your tone is coming off, because you sound like a thoroughly unpleasant person
@@AceIsGamingI wouldn't say that's the reason, I'd say the obvious reason is that he only has almost 2k subs and the video has only been out for 2 days. It already has 1k+ views. Give it a month and it will probably have 10k+ views. A game being well known and covered by well known content creators doesn't stop people from watching videos from less known content creators. I don't even know why you would bring that up as a point.
Love the suffering
Can't wait for suffering 2
One kf my favorite games of all time. The sequel is cool too
I liked going through the creature files
This is probably a stretch but Horus in Egyptian Myth is the god of the sky (among other things.) Sky? Lightning? Horrace? Again it's a stretch but an interesting observation I think.
Still hoping for a remake one day.
Picture "No Way Out" with a grimm storyline ...game play like "Evil Within 2"....& The jump scares & suspense like "The Quarry"....This game should of gotten more love & support than had it gotten.....Its one helleva game...,!!!!
😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
what if carmen killed the two boys and torque killed her in a fit of rage but got blamed for all of it
I could see the scenario working, but what would be the reason behind Carmen killing the kids? Throughout the game, she always had the kids’ best interest in mind
Were you playing the PC version?
I used PCSX2 to emulate it on PC
Idk why but this game reminds me of Manhunt 2
I liked the sequel more!
If i had to assume, the colonel is probably someone who was working with the racist gang who Torque shivved a bunch of during his time at Eastern, implying that there WOULD be people who have it out for him.
Yeah, that’s not a bad guess. I’m assuming it’s all explained in the sequel, just sucks that you get no context right at the end of the game
im actually playing this on my channel if anyone is interested :) All The way thru i mean not cut up like this
U really deforming lord of the rings tho???? Wow...
21:15 push through for wife
