exactly what I been doing lately. I see the chord as the foundation, the arpeggio is next, then the pentatonic, then the full scale. the next chord in the song it usually right there under your fingers. Magic! Thanks for the information
Beautiful thought pattern and way of thinking about chords... knowing where the root, third, fifth, and adds are in a given position, getting that arpeggio down and then adding the other notes to form the scale... oh then using those connections/notes in your soloing... the learning continues and I appreciate you teaching great foundational approaches to bring into habit :)
The geometry of the fretboard is so interesting - to replace the idea of just playing the scale to actively thinking of the half steps from maj3rd-4th and maj7-root is a very logical way to think about this - thank you for that lightbulb moment.
Great! Very useful perspective! May I ask: what's the pedal and/or amp setting you use to obtain the nice sustain of the final tone (eg at 1:34 or a few in-between tones in the introduction)?
My ego fights it fang and claw. I just want to flow with the spirit moving through me and the music BUT one cannot argue with science. Even so, it all seems so mechanical with the technical approach when music for me, well... I will try to keep an opened mind.
It's like im too far gone for this. I learned to play without knowing notes or scales and only using my ear.. Spent a lot of time trying to learn tthings the proper way but not ending up utilizing any of it when actually playing because it's so unnatural to me. Still i know it would help me a lot if i could actually learn but my brain is kinda wired in the wrong way now. I really wish i had proper guidance early on xD cursed to never know what the fuck im actually doing.
I get how you feel, but it’s never too late to learn! a good ear is a great strength, and with the right guidance/focus, you’ll make 'theory' click naturally, with your ear leveraging that- the whole reason being to expand expression on the instrument, which is a wonderful goal. @@sturdychinfilms Ive had teachers that were great but i guess couldnt explain this stuff in a way that made sense to me at all. It feels like teachers have trouble understanding what i need maybe because my perspective is from exclusively playing alone - never had a band or something like that. The fault is probably my own though becuase for me it's difficult to even put things into words since i don't have the habit of communicating with others about music.
Sometimes I’ll take a chord and just try playing chromatic pattern around all the notes in the chord, I try to listen to which notes create stronger tones and which ones sound outside. It’s just a poor man’s way of doing something similar to what you’re teaching,

Wasted a lot of time when I was 20 trying to decode guitar chords...but with a teacher like you same results in half time, man you are precious!

Get a teacher, homie! Even just a few lessons to fill in some of the gaps is going to set you up nicely.
