After hearing from the chief engineer of this platform and knowing that the turbo 4 cylinder that’s going into this truck has been used worldwide by Toyota for nearly a decade now on the Hilux, I’m not all that concerned. Toyota generally knows what they’re doing. I’d take a chance on a new model Toyota any day over anything that Ford, GM or Stellantis put out there.
The Hilux has a 4cyl turbo but its not this. In my experience back home in Nicaragua we get the Hilux and it has 2 options a 2.7 and a 3.0 both turbo but Diesel no gas engines. Im excited to see this performance tho, i recently got a 23 Tundra and low key want the new Taco.

I disagree, I want the heated/cooled seats. The bigger display, better audio, auto tailgate. I think I'm gonna get the Limited with all the bells and whistles and comfortable ride.
@Endless Nameless my 2010 Venza had a JBL system and it's by far the best I've ever heard in like 40 different vehicles I drove in. The surround sound was spectacular.
Agree with most of these points. Just wanted to say that Toyota has had years of experience with hybrids in the Prius and I would def trust that powertrain. Going to wait for the mid cycle refresh for them to do something different with that front bumper
Idk what crack you been smoking but the prius isn't as reliable as you think and there a different between a plug in hybrid and what the new tacoma, which gets its energy from the a generator sandwich between the engine and transmission.
My issue with Tacoma is they always spread out the desirable features across different trims so you can't get exactly the truck you want. Whether it's the manual, a sunroof, 4x4, bed length, cab style...the only thing you get in every trim is a lack of head room in the rear seats.
Yeah if the trail hunter came with an access cab manual transmission it would be an instant buy for me. I do realize that’s not a desirable configuration for most though
@theslyrylan I just wish they would offer the manual with the 6 foot bed. But like you said not as many people would be into stuff like that. So instead of producing them like the rest. They would become a special order type. That only get made when someone orders 1 like that. And they have to wait to have it built. Then it gets delivered to your choice of either your place or the dealership that ordered from since it's a special order model.
Agreed. I've owned a 2011 TRD Tacoma since new, 150,000 miles, 4L V6, never a single problem. Just routine maintenance. But that Trail Hunter is pretty cool. I'll be trading my 2011 in, but in 2025.
Toyota has more experience with turbos/hybrids than any other manufacturer, so I'm not really concerned about the drivetrain. That said, buying the initial release of a complete redesign from ANY manufacturer is just asking for trouble. 3rd gen Tacoma, new Tundra, new Broncos, etc. etc. Wait until year 2 at least, mid-cycle refresh would be best. I'm extremely happy with my 2015, last model year of the 2nd gens. Reliability perfected. Protect the frame and it should be bulletproof.
2015 brother here as well with 77k miles. Such simple and solid feeling trucks. Protect the frame from the road salts and you're good! They'll never make trucks like these again.
I test drove the regionals test/sample Trailhunter a few weeks ago when I was getting an oil change. It made me glad I picked up a 2023 SR5 Trail. I don’t want an 8 inch flatscreen or more stuff that can break. The draw of the Tacoma was the simplicity of the entire platform.
@@Hubscharber That crap was from many years ago with gen 2 Tacoma's, they were fixed via many recalls by replacing the frames that were rusted through. I don't see that happening ever again. I agree with this video, never buy a new first year Gen vehicle, they always have some issues to work out!
I was holding out for a new gen but when I saw the press release photos of the obnoxious size screen I went and bought a 19 sr with only 13k on it. Lol so happy I did. I wanted a new reliable low mileage truck but with the old school basic feel. Perfect balance of old school with new comfort.
Here we go... old schoolers pushing back. Tundra 5.7 V8 lovers did the same thing. The new gen Tundras are sick and so will the Tacoma's. Take a back seat if you wish.
i got the 2023 and I'm glad I finally found a video that isn't all 100% for the new 24 because I literally thought the same thing about the new gadgets (more things to break).
I think the new gen Tacoma is meant for a very specific crowd. I love what my 3rd gen came with and I'm not worried about where people think it's lacking. I have no interest in looking into a 4th gen Tacoma. I'm also a fan of the "dated" appearance of the 3rd gen taco.

Agreed, the USA is always the last market for new vehicles to get released. These 4cyl turbos aren’t going to do well in the USA. The guy doing this video is correct about turbos warming up and cooling down, Americans are impatient people for the most part.

At first I thought this video was gonna try/attempt to convince me to try another brand (I would never) but I was wrong. This video is actually right. It’s probably smarter to wait for the 2025 model Tacoma. It should be almost perfect. Of course I’m not too excited about the new power train in it but it is what it is. 2011 to 2013 4x4 Chevy Suburban or Tahoe is everything you’ll ever need. 4th generation all aluminum LS V8’s, 5 link rear suspensions Coilover front suspensions, 6 speed transmissions with a low first gear, inexpensive widely available parts, can carry everything inside, tow and sleep comfortably and go in a moments notice without exiting the vehicle at o’dark thirty while camping in grizzly bear Alaska. Taco’s are for eating not driving. Lol 😊
The updates to the 4th Gen Tacoma are exciting. But I agree, it will take a couple years to work out the bugs. Same thing happened when the 3rd gen came out.
@@armyretired28 The famous gear searching. I remember guys complaining about it. It was also happening with people who lifted their trucks and those 3.5 liter 3rd Gen motors would struggle at times. That got fixed in the 2020+ models?
This is exactly why I have gotten so frustrated seeing the Tiktoks, youtube videos, etc where people list their gripes and complain about the Tacoma that consist of the lack of electronics and features. This is why those that buy them have them! The reliability of new vehicles without the nonsense attached that will break and fail. It really is disappointing that there are now no barebones, simple trucks left. Those who complain about these things really miss what made 1st through 3rd gen trucks so great. You want rear A/C, Wifi, and force inducted engines? Great, pick up literally any other new vehicle on the road. It's a sad day for simplistic rig lovers.
I completely agree with you. I hate all the new crap they put in the trucks, it just adds to the cost and the potential problems all those little nitpicky electronics bring along. I’ll also never buy a hybrid as the short life of the battery completely determines the life of the truck. They sure don’t make them like they used to unfortunately.
I followed the new tundra like crazy and then was disappointed by the looks. Tacoma looks way better. BUT, like any new model, problems abound. Lol my 06 tacoma just turned 250k miles. I don't wanna even think about paying for a new one no matter how much I love it. It's old but still gets it done trouble free.
Good to hear a little negativity after being flooded with praise for the 2024. I really like the looks of it but I don’t care for gadgets or turbo engines. My 2022 TRD 4x4 Sport has 20,000 miles and should last me a long time.
The tacoma is a great truck, super reliable, runs long miles. My wife has a 2013, and still running strong. The only complaint is the mileage, it's very poor. I have a 2021 Sierra 1500 Elevation X31 4x4 and gives up to 30 mpg in the highway. 22 city with the 3.0 Duramax.
I had a 2007 Tacoma and then again got a 2015 Tacoma which I have still. I hear you about the mpgs. But will the 2021 Sierra or what not have the potential to last as long as prior Tacomas? I'll take the lose in mpgs for a solid truck
why would they price it to compete with the tundra? it wouldnt make sense for them to out price the big truck with a mid size, if anything the trailhunter will be the same price as a TRD off road tundra like 55-60
FINALLY someone mentioning the engine, I dont trust the new one. all they had to do is turbo the old motor and perfect the tuning, and upgrade the transmission. I dont want features, I want reliability.
The new tacoma is an urban mall crawler. It's not for previous tacoma owners that are after a simple mid size truck that will last 2 decades or more. Just refer to the new Tundra and all their issues. They made a collant pipe plastic, it leaks within a year, and you have to lift the cab off the frame to replace it. Best to just keep your old truck forever and replace things as they break, egnine, trans everything.
Well old Tacoma owners are scaredy cats. Probably hated electric windows when they came out. Toyota wants to widen its customer base and go after the bigger market, who aren’t living in fear.

I agree with waiting a year or two but your idea of a $60-$70 Tacoma is absurd as your claim. The biggest mistake is your indoctrination with Ford, Dodge & Chevy. Toyota is above the American way of building automobiles that lasts and get good returns. Yes those TRD PRO seats are way overboard, they could easily eliminate it & cut back the price about $1500 its the only unnecessary I can agree with. Sorry just my opinion as a former Toyota sales person who did factory tours and endless hours of product training.

Great Video, I waited 3 years before purchasing my Taco, its a 2018. I agree, I dont need fancy electronics stuff, give me reliability over tech any day of the week.
We are talking about Toyota here who leads in reliability and has had decades to perfect its hybrid power train. New turbo vehicles with modern twin scroll turbos don’t have the warm up cool down issues of the past. The gadgets and electronification of everything was necessary to compete with the Ranger and Colorado. Plus 465 torque. Enjoy your 3rd gen!
Man I couldn't agree with you more. For years they have been adding more "crap" that can go wrong with cars that will frustrate and you and drain your wallet big time when something goes wrong! I bought a 2022 Tacoma and I'm overall happy with, but fear something can go sideways that I won't be able to fix.
I am absolutely waiting at least a year before considering taking a look at the 4th gen Tacoma. I am not a fan of the turbo 4, but with all the other improvements (seating position, infotainment, brakes, suspension, etc) it has over the 3rd gen, I can settle for it. However, I am not at all interested in any hybrid whatsoever.
The turbo keeps toyota going full electric its a loop hole through bidens stupid green new deal that he wants all cars to be electric but doing a turbo and hybrid setup it keeps toyota in that epa bubble. Plus toyota used to do turbos in the 80' and 90'S and there turbo cars were bullet peoof. So dont worry about the turbo toyota takes years to make sure they get it right before they produce it. Thats why toyota had the same turbo 4 in the lexus NX back in 2017 and it was bullet proof.
You’re absolutely right about everything. And prices for a mid size truck are so dumb. Give me a no frills, all gas basic ass Tacoma for $25k and I’ll build it the way I like without all the dumb stuff.
While I completely agree on letting them fix the bugs (there were a few with the Tundra), I disagree with the concerns on the turbo. I have a 2020 Civic with a turbo & run basic gas through it, not premium, and don't have to let it warm up / cool down. I'll add - if the new Taco is going for anywhere close to $80k, that'd be ridiculous. Someone else mentioned it in the comments, the v6 is going to be a collector's item now & any of the 2023 (and prior) versions of it should hold phenomenal resale value.
If the newer turbos systems solved those concerns that would be awesome. My last one was a 2010 twin turbo bmw. Typically for longevity its best to let it warm up to let oil get up in it. And let it cool off before shutting the car down.
Warm up and cool down can be done while driving and should be as air is moving around the turbo while moving. Just stay out of boost for the first and last couple miles and life is good.
I agree with the too much stuff that we don’t need that can break. I believe it’s planned obsolescence from the manufacturers. They want more stuff to break without saying it. They also want to charge you for features as standard equipment even though I don’t want it or need it. We are slaves in the system. We don’t choose we obey.
One thing you can't deny about the Tacoma is that they hold their value because they are highly desirable. As a matter of fact, I just sold my 2021 Tacoma with the SX package with 47,000 miles for $25,000, after having paid $30,000 for it back in January of 2021.
You are absolutely right. All mid sized, NOT compact trucks, are going to be expensive. I just bought the new Canyon and love it and paid less for it than msrp because I am a GM Retiree, but it was still expensive because all of the options are just as expensive on the mid size trucks as they are on the full size trucks. The sheet metals and raw materials are expensive because of the stamping and injection molding process is about the same costs on a mid sized truck as they are on a full size truck. As far as engines are concerned, the GM 2.7 was designed from its foundation to be a turbo and was engineered to have the strength of a diesel truck engine that runs on gasoline and even the cooling system doesn't rely on the engines RPMs but on an electrical system triggered and adjusted by thermostatic controlled, response. Big difference of engineering than taking an engine from a production bin and slapping a turbo on to it and hoping for the best. I say give Toyota a break, they know what they are doing and will make adjustments based on market determinations. Even as a GM Guy I can thank Toyota for forcing GM to make better mid sized trucks because of there competitive tenacity.
One of the most demonstrative interior qualities is the lack of accessory attachment points. The dash is void of open spaces and the mega screen captures any remaining accessible real estate. I agree. I am going to stick with my 2020 OR.
Had a 94 Tacoma before kids. Now that they are on their own just got a 2016 TRD Off Road with a cap 38,000 miles never driven in our Michigan winters. Will be my retirement rig and will be making solo trips to the Upper Peninsula and out west. Have enjoyed your videos.
I don't agree to wait that long. I have a 2018 tacoma and had no major issues with it. Just a few recalls that didn't effect the cars performance at all. And the TRD pro is gonna start around 55k.
Don't necessarily disagree, any new model vehicle will have some kinks to work out, but I have a few counter points. 1.) Toyota probably has more experience with hybrids than any other manufacturer. Their hybrid systems are proven and reliable. 2.) Most modern turbo vehicles don't require high octane fuel. I had a Kia Stinger GT2 that ran perfect on 87. 3.) As an aging man with a bad back, the suspension seats are extremely appealing to me 😂 I guess we'll soon see if your concerns are valid!
TRD PRO for sure be close to 70k. Car prices have been insane after 2021. And also good luck finding one at MSRP, the markups are about to be legendary.
You make a lot of sense. I bought a '22 Toyota Sienna, thinking they would have the bugs worked out. Nope. The fuel gauge was broken, and Toyota couldn't be bothered fixing in. I ended up selling it as I never knew how much gas was in it.
I disagree. I sold my tacoma and hated too but my back and legs would hurt after just 30 min. I drive my vehicle at least 3 to 5 hrs or more every weekend with the wife. Seating position killed it but I loved it other wise. Now it seems they kept the type of look and interior look but updated it and gave us power seats not on the floor. I have a deposit on a new 24 trd pro and plan on this being my last vehicle. Time it gets here next yr I'll be 61. Can't wait... had hard time deciding between trims. 1st had it on trail hunter then more I thought about it went to pro. I could care less about power tail gate bur oh well.
Great video! I don’t agree with everything you’ve said, but I’m glad you said it. Specifically about the electronic tailgate. I disagree about the electric “moving parts”, as there are none. I do agree with allowing the 4th Gen to age a bit before purchase. -but the 4th Gen looks so damn good!!
As a previous Ford diesel tech, and lover of both older toyota and ford vehicles, the new vehicles are extraction machines. I couldnt even tell you how many problems there are with design, fit/finish, and component quality issues that are going to put the major hurt on people outside of warranty. Get an older vehicle, fix it up, have longevity, cheaper insurance, registration, less inital cost, less tax, and honestly, I get way more compliments on my older fixed up vehicles than the new ones by far. Of course all the mods and $10k audio system help, but still saved tens of thousands even with all uogrades, and have a better engineered platform to build on that'll last and still look better than anything new. Just throwing that out there.
3rd Gen is the happy medium for the right balance of technology and longevity. The weakness is the TSS front sensor and stability control system. The 4th gen has electronic key fob, electronic parking brake, and worst of all - the turbo 4cyl or the hybrid 4 cyl. The suspension seats look sweet, but will come with a cost - watch and see the competitors come out on their trucks.
Even though these drivetrain and powerplants are proven in other Toyota vehicles for years now, I agree with you on waiting a year or two just because they are being assembled into a new platform. If they were coming directly from Japan like the 4runner, I'd be less concerned. I just purchased a 23 4runner two months ago and a new Tundra 3 years ago for the same reasons. I don't want, or need, all those so called "improvements" and I want to be able to work on my own vehicle as much as possible. Hopefully I gambled correctly and won't have to do that very often anyway... My Tundra has had only one minor issue in the last 3 years; a wonky door hinge bushing 2 years ago which they fixed in 30 minutes. I can live with that after owning a Dodge truck for 15 years before that (constant headaches).
You are 100% on spot, the reason I have two Toyotas is because they are simpler with quality built and reliable, the more technology the more problems.
Many valid points. I’m hoping the turbo and electric motor will be fine though. Toyota has been doing both of these and doing them very well for many years. It isn’t exactly their first rodeo. Agree on the tailgate button, that was the most unnecessary feature that will be sure to be a headache down the road. Only time will tell!!
I agree, it's a big change for Toyota to go from n a to a 4 cylinder turbo. I've had first gen tacos and 2nd gen tacos and one third gen taco and I currently have a 5th gen 4runner. The 2nd gen tacos and my current 4runner are far and away the best Toyota's I've ever had. I think its because of the bullet proof 4L set up. I wish Toyota would bring back the 4L with more horse power and more tourqe.
Agree with every thing. People saying 3rd gen values will tank after the 4th gen comes out. If they're gonna price the new Tacoma at $60k I think just the opposite will happen. Very happy with my 2022 TRD OFF RD.
They said that about the tundra and the 21s went up 10 to 15k in price when the 22s finally rolled out. People were almost panicking to get the last of the V8s.
I agree with pretty much all of that. Especially the pricing. In my area, current trd pro tacomas are going for $75K without markup. I can see the new one going for over $100K once dealers and scalpers get their hands on them. It will probably take 3-4 years before they get mass produced enough to become affordable.

I already bought my Tacoma. But this video pretty much sums up why I jumped on a 2021 Tundra, and a 2023 Tacoma. I just don't need all the cool stuff and even after several years, they are still having problems with the 22+ Tundra lineup.
I totally agree. You should wait at least a decade after a new model is released, or at least 5 years after a model refresh to make sure all the bugs are worked out before you buy a new truck. after that, i recommend leasing, maxing it out for overlanding and trading it in each time a new TRD Pro color is released.
Wait 5-10 years to buy a new or refreshed vehicle...that's absurd. It's not like the car companies just started making vehicles last year. Most have been around for longer than the most of us have been alive.
Agree, agree, agree. And I also think pricing will be insane. I would definitely wait and see on the new engine. Many people were not even fans of the Atkinson 3.5L V6. The older Tacomas had the best engine, the tried and true 1GR-FE 4L V6. Combine that with the new truck not being ready for 35’s without cutting and I don’t think Toyota hit a home run with this one. But time will tell.
You are like the first person I hear share most of my views on this! They aren't trying to sell this to the usual Tacoma lover's, they're trying to sell this to everyone else. Most of your points were things I thought after hearing all the new specs about it upon it's release. 80% should've been saved for the top trim packages IF the customer wants it, especially the chair and button for the tailgate.
Exactly, I kee getting asked if I'm trading in my 2020 for a 2024. Nope. I will wait til at least the 3rd year of the 4th gen. A lot of people are getting suckered into the hp/torque numbers of the new hybrid but I honestly just wanted the same V6 with a turbo or twin turbo, kind of like my old F150 3.5L Ecoboost I used to have before the Taco. I had great power and mpg balance while still enjoying a nice exhaust sound from the v6 turbo.
What blows my mind is that even with the HP/TQ upgrade… the towing capacity went down! Pretty absurd to add that much power and a new stronger frame, and not increase towing. Payload went up some, but not that significantly.
I agree 👍, people these days are more impressed by the bells and whistles of a vehicle instead of the reliability. I love my 2019 tundra, It might not half a flat screen t.v on the dashboard like the 2023, But I can guarantee my truck will last longer to everyday wear and tear, and I won't have the electronic and turbo issue from these little engines there putting in these trucks, That aren't even giving you that much better MPG. Now if Toyota could do a true hybrid truck like the Prius that actually got you 30 to 40 MPG I would be interested, Otherwise I'm sticking with what works 😊👍 For people who don't like what I'm saying, I will wave 👋 at you when I drive by you while broke down on the side road 🛣️ 😉 Lol 😂😆😢
I may be lucky but I bought a 2005 and it has been and still is flawless, performance wise with just regular maintenance (298,000 miles). No leaks, doesn't consume oil. I'm thinking like this guy on the 2024's though. Even though I know Toyota is on top of things ,I want to see how those turbos work out.
I share your concerns. They should be coming out with V6 engines too. Who the heck wants a truck with only 4 cylinders? Turbo is just another thing that can go wrong besides putting a huge wear on the engine. Glad I kept my V8 Magnum Dakota.

As a mechanic I agree as to never buying any vehicle after a major production change, it's not so much as reliability issues as it is to electronics, fitment and parts compatibility. Engineers are people too and they get things wrong all the time, I see it every day.
I have never been much of a truck guy, but I'm considering a Tacoma. My first thought for the '24 was... A 4 cylinder turbo in a truck? Nope. Maybe with a diesel, but not gas. Maybe the engine can give good power or speed, but I feel like it won't last 300k+ miles like the older ones. I'll take a '21 with a V6, 6 speed manual.
Wait 3-5 years as with all new generations....there will be many problems to fix. Some folks love to be the $50k Guinea pig. And truck prices are crashing if you haven't noticed....better to wait and buy the repoed 3rd gens that will pile up

diesel turbo is different than gasoline/petrol, like night and day difference in terms of low-end torque.
I was told the hylander has had the 4 cylinder engine for a while now. So yes toyota knows what they are doing.

It’s an entirely different hybrid system than the Prius. It’s the same system as in the hybrid tundra.

My issue with Tacoma is they always spread out the desirable features across different trims so you can't get exactly the truck you want. Whether it's the manual, a sunroof, 4x4, bed length, cab style...the only thing you get in every trim is a lack of head room in the rear seats.
Yeah if the trail hunter came with an access cab manual transmission it would be an instant buy for me. I do realize that’s not a desirable configuration for most though

They would become a special order type. That only get made when someone orders 1 like that. And they have to wait to have it built. Then it gets delivered to your choice of either your place or the dealership that ordered from since it's a special order model.

Agreed. I've owned a 2011 TRD Tacoma since new, 150,000 miles, 4L V6, never a single problem. Just routine maintenance. But that Trail Hunter is pretty cool. I'll be trading my 2011 in, but in 2025.

Toyota has more experience with turbos/hybrids than any other manufacturer, so I'm not really concerned about the drivetrain. That said, buying the initial release of a complete redesign from ANY manufacturer is just asking for trouble. 3rd gen Tacoma, new Tundra, new Broncos, etc. etc. Wait until year 2 at least, mid-cycle refresh would be best. I'm extremely happy with my 2015, last model year of the 2nd gens. Reliability perfected. Protect the frame and it should be bulletproof.
2015 brother here as well with 77k miles. Such simple and solid feeling trucks. Protect the frame from the road salts and you're good! They'll never make trucks like these again.
The bronco is badass looking but ford will NEVER work out the bugs. The whole truck is a giant bug sadly. It’s almost jeep level for repairs.

I test drove the regionals test/sample Trailhunter a few weeks ago when I was getting an oil change. It made me glad I picked up a 2023 SR5 Trail. I don’t want an 8 inch flatscreen or more stuff that can break. The draw of the Tacoma was the simplicity of the entire platform.
Why worry about the 8" touch screen breaking when the frame would rot out first?
I also picked up a trail edition last month because I wanted a new but more basic truck. No regrets :)
@@Hubscharber That crap was from many years ago with gen 2 Tacoma's, they were fixed via many recalls by replacing the frames that were rusted through. I don't see that happening ever again. I agree with this video, never buy a new first year Gen vehicle, they always have some issues to work out!
I was holding out for a new gen but when I saw the press release photos of the obnoxious size screen I went and bought a 19 sr with only 13k on it. Lol so happy I did. I wanted a new reliable low mileage truck but with the old school basic feel. Perfect balance of old school with new comfort.
Here we go... old schoolers pushing back. Tundra 5.7 V8 lovers did the same thing. The new gen Tundras are sick and so will the Tacoma's. Take a back seat if you wish.

2011 to 2013 4x4 Chevy Suburban or Tahoe is everything you’ll ever need. 4th generation all aluminum LS V8’s, 5 link rear suspensions Coilover front suspensions, 6 speed transmissions with a low first gear, inexpensive widely available parts, can carry everything inside, tow and sleep comfortably and go in a moments notice without exiting the vehicle at o’dark thirty while camping in grizzly bear Alaska. Taco’s are for eating not driving. Lol 😊

The transmission for one, it kept searching for what gear to be in, it was up and down shifting.
@@armyretired28 The famous gear searching. I remember guys complaining about it. It was also happening with people who lifted their trucks and those 3.5 liter 3rd Gen motors would struggle at times. That got fixed in the 2020+ models?

This is exactly why I have gotten so frustrated seeing the Tiktoks, youtube videos, etc where people list their gripes and complain about the Tacoma that consist of the lack of electronics and features. This is why those that buy them have them! The reliability of new vehicles without the nonsense attached that will break and fail. It really is disappointing that there are now no barebones, simple trucks left.
Those who complain about these things really miss what made 1st through 3rd gen trucks so great. You want rear A/C, Wifi, and force inducted engines? Great, pick up literally any other new vehicle on the road.
It's a sad day for simplistic rig lovers.

I completely agree with you. I hate all the new crap they put in the trucks, it just adds to the cost and the potential problems all those little nitpicky electronics bring along. I’ll also never buy a hybrid as the short life of the battery completely determines the life of the truck. They sure don’t make them like they used to unfortunately.

I followed the new tundra like crazy and then was disappointed by the looks. Tacoma looks way better. BUT, like any new model, problems abound. Lol my 06 tacoma just turned 250k miles. I don't wanna even think about paying for a new one no matter how much I love it. It's old but still gets it done trouble free.
Good to hear a little negativity after being flooded with praise for the 2024. I really like the looks of it but I don’t care for gadgets or turbo engines. My 2022 TRD 4x4 Sport has 20,000 miles and should last me a long time.

The tacoma is a great truck, super reliable, runs long miles. My wife has a 2013, and still running strong. The only complaint is the mileage, it's very poor. I have a 2021 Sierra 1500 Elevation X31 4x4 and gives up to 30 mpg in the highway. 22 city with the 3.0 Duramax.
I had a 2007 Tacoma and then again got a 2015 Tacoma which I have still. I hear you about the mpgs. But will the 2021 Sierra or what not have the potential to last as long as prior Tacomas? I'll take the lose in mpgs for a solid truck

The big problem will be the price. I'd honestly be surprised if a mid-level 4th-gen comes in under 70k. That's just too much.

why would they price it to compete with the tundra? it wouldnt make sense for them to out price the big truck with a mid size, if anything the trailhunter will be the same price as a TRD off road tundra like 55-60

The new tacoma is an urban mall crawler. It's not for previous tacoma owners that are after a simple mid size truck that will last 2 decades or more. Just refer to the new Tundra and all their issues. They made a collant pipe plastic, it leaks within a year, and you have to lift the cab off the frame to replace it.
Best to just keep your old truck forever and replace things as they break, egnine, trans everything.

We are talking about Toyota here who leads in reliability and has had decades to perfect its hybrid power train. New turbo vehicles with modern twin scroll turbos don’t have the warm up cool down issues of the past. The gadgets and electronification of everything was necessary to compete with the Ranger and Colorado. Plus 465 torque. Enjoy your 3rd gen!

Man I couldn't agree with you more. For years they have been adding more "crap" that can go wrong with cars that will frustrate and you and drain your wallet big time when something goes wrong! I bought a 2022 Tacoma and I'm overall happy with, but fear something can go sideways that I won't be able to fix.
I am absolutely waiting at least a year before considering taking a look at the 4th gen Tacoma. I am not a fan of the turbo 4, but with all the other improvements (seating position, infotainment, brakes, suspension, etc) it has over the 3rd gen, I can settle for it. However, I am not at all interested in any hybrid whatsoever.
The turbo keeps toyota going full electric its a loop hole through bidens stupid green new deal that he wants all cars to be electric but doing a turbo and hybrid setup it keeps toyota in that epa bubble. Plus toyota used to do turbos in the 80' and 90'S and there turbo cars were bullet peoof. So dont worry about the turbo toyota takes years to make sure they get it right before they produce it. Thats why toyota had the same turbo 4 in the lexus NX back in 2017 and it was bullet proof.
You’re absolutely right about everything. And prices for a mid size truck are so dumb. Give me a no frills, all gas basic ass Tacoma for $25k and I’ll build it the way I like without all the dumb stuff.
While I completely agree on letting them fix the bugs (there were a few with the Tundra), I disagree with the concerns on the turbo. I have a 2020 Civic with a turbo & run basic gas through it, not premium, and don't have to let it warm up / cool down. I'll add - if the new Taco is going for anywhere close to $80k, that'd be ridiculous. Someone else mentioned it in the comments, the v6 is going to be a collector's item now & any of the 2023 (and prior) versions of it should hold phenomenal resale value.
If the newer turbos systems solved those concerns that would be awesome. My last one was a 2010 twin turbo bmw. Typically for longevity its best to let it warm up to let oil get up in it. And let it cool off before shutting the car down.
Warm up and cool down can be done while driving and should be as air is moving around the turbo while moving. Just stay out of boost for the first and last couple miles and life is good.
2020 is still pretty new to have issues. Usually turbos start having issues around 80-120k based on my Toyota tech guy.
I think the base level with the manual transmission will be the best one to get.
I agree with the too much stuff that we don’t need that can break. I believe it’s planned obsolescence from the manufacturers. They want more stuff to break without saying it. They also want to charge you for features as standard equipment even though I don’t want it or need it. We are slaves in the system. We don’t choose we obey.
One thing you can't deny about the Tacoma is that they hold their value because they are highly desirable. As a matter of fact, I just sold my 2021 Tacoma with the SX package with 47,000 miles for $25,000, after having paid $30,000 for it back in January of 2021.
You are absolutely right. All mid sized, NOT compact trucks, are going to be expensive. I just bought the new Canyon and love it and paid less for it than msrp because I am a GM Retiree, but it was still expensive because all of the options are just as expensive on the mid size trucks as they are on the full size trucks. The sheet metals and raw materials are expensive because of the stamping and injection molding process is about the same costs on a mid sized truck as they are on a full size truck. As far as engines are concerned, the GM 2.7 was designed from its foundation to be a turbo and was engineered to have the strength of a diesel truck engine that runs on gasoline and even the cooling system doesn't rely on the engines RPMs but on an electrical system triggered and adjusted by thermostatic controlled, response. Big difference of engineering than taking an engine from a production bin and slapping a turbo on to it and hoping for the best. I say give Toyota a break, they know what they are doing and will make adjustments based on market determinations. Even as a GM Guy I can thank Toyota for forcing GM to make better mid sized trucks because of there competitive tenacity.

One of the most demonstrative interior qualities is the lack of accessory attachment points. The dash is void of open spaces and the mega screen captures any remaining accessible real estate. I agree. I am going to stick with my 2020 OR.

Don't necessarily disagree, any new model vehicle will have some kinks to work out, but I have a few counter points.
1.) Toyota probably has more experience with hybrids than any other manufacturer. Their hybrid systems are proven and reliable.
2.) Most modern turbo vehicles don't require high octane fuel. I had a Kia Stinger GT2 that ran perfect on 87.
3.) As an aging man with a bad back, the suspension seats are extremely appealing to me 😂

Ford dealer told me $15k markup on the Ranger Raptor I wanted to order. Dealer in FL added $10k of dealer junk to a '23 AT4X for a total of $72k 😂
You make a lot of sense. I bought a '22 Toyota Sienna, thinking they would have the bugs worked out. Nope. The fuel gauge was broken, and Toyota couldn't be bothered fixing in. I ended up selling it as I never knew how much gas was in it.
I disagree. I sold my tacoma and hated too but my back and legs would hurt after just 30 min. I drive my vehicle at least 3 to 5 hrs or more every weekend with the wife. Seating position killed it but I loved it other wise. Now it seems they kept the type of look and interior look but updated it and gave us power seats not on the floor. I have a deposit on a new 24 trd pro and plan on this being my last vehicle. Time it gets here next yr I'll be 61. Can't wait... had hard time deciding between trims. 1st had it on trail hunter then more I thought about it went to pro. I could care less about power tail gate bur oh well.

Great video! I don’t agree with everything you’ve said, but I’m glad you said it. Specifically about the electronic tailgate. I disagree about the electric “moving parts”, as there are none. I do agree with allowing the 4th Gen to age a bit before purchase. -but the 4th Gen looks so damn good!!
As a previous Ford diesel tech, and lover of both older toyota and ford vehicles, the new vehicles are extraction machines. I couldnt even tell you how many problems there are with design, fit/finish, and component quality issues that are going to put the major hurt on people outside of warranty. Get an older vehicle, fix it up, have longevity, cheaper insurance, registration, less inital cost, less tax, and honestly, I get way more compliments on my older fixed up vehicles than the new ones by far. Of course all the mods and $10k audio system help, but still saved tens of thousands even with all uogrades, and have a better engineered platform to build on that'll last and still look better than anything new.
Just throwing that out there.
3rd Gen is the happy medium for the right balance of technology and longevity. The weakness is the TSS front sensor and stability control system. The 4th gen has electronic key fob, electronic parking brake, and worst of all - the turbo 4cyl or the hybrid 4 cyl. The suspension seats look sweet, but will come with a cost - watch and see the competitors come out on their trucks.

Even though these drivetrain and powerplants are proven in other Toyota vehicles for years now, I agree with you on waiting a year or two just because they are being assembled into a new platform. If they were coming directly from Japan like the 4runner, I'd be less concerned. I just purchased a 23 4runner two months ago and a new Tundra 3 years ago for the same reasons. I don't want, or need, all those so called "improvements" and I want to be able to work on my own vehicle as much as possible. Hopefully I gambled correctly and won't have to do that very often anyway... My Tundra has had only one minor issue in the last 3 years; a wonky door hinge bushing 2 years ago which they fixed in 30 minutes. I can live with that after owning a Dodge truck for 15 years before that (constant headaches).

I agree, it's a big change for Toyota to go from n a to a 4 cylinder turbo. I've had first gen tacos and 2nd gen tacos and one third gen taco and I currently have a 5th gen 4runner. The 2nd gen tacos and my current 4runner are far and away the best Toyota's I've ever had. I think its because of the bullet proof 4L set up. I wish Toyota would bring back the 4L with more horse power and more tourqe.

Agree with every thing. People saying 3rd gen values will tank after the 4th gen comes out. If they're gonna price the new Tacoma at $60k I think just the opposite will happen. Very happy with my 2022 TRD OFF RD.
They said that about the tundra and the 21s went up 10 to 15k in price when the 22s finally rolled out. People were almost panicking to get the last of the V8s.
I agree with pretty much all of that. Especially the pricing. In my area, current trd pro tacomas are going for $75K without markup. I can see the new one going for over $100K once dealers and scalpers get their hands on them. It will probably take 3-4 years before they get mass produced enough to become affordable.

I already bought my Tacoma. But this video pretty much sums up why I jumped on a 2021 Tundra, and a 2023 Tacoma. I just don't need all the cool stuff and even after several years, they are still having problems with the 22+ Tundra lineup.

You should wait at least a decade after a new model is released, or at least 5 years after a model refresh to make sure all the bugs are worked out before you buy a new truck. after that, i recommend leasing, maxing it out for overlanding and trading it in each time a new TRD Pro color is released.

Agree, agree, agree. And I also think pricing will be insane. I would definitely wait and see on the new engine. Many people were not even fans of the Atkinson 3.5L V6. The older Tacomas had the best engine, the tried and true 1GR-FE 4L V6. Combine that with the new truck not being ready for 35’s without cutting and I don’t think Toyota hit a home run with this one. But time will tell.

You are like the first person I hear share most of my views on this! They aren't trying to sell this to the usual Tacoma lover's, they're trying to sell this to everyone else. Most of your points were things I thought after hearing all the new specs about it upon it's release. 80% should've been saved for the top trim packages IF the customer wants it, especially the chair and button for the tailgate.
Exactly, I kee getting asked if I'm trading in my 2020 for a 2024. Nope. I will wait til at least the 3rd year of the 4th gen. A lot of people are getting suckered into the hp/torque numbers of the new hybrid but I honestly just wanted the same V6 with a turbo or twin turbo, kind of like my old F150 3.5L Ecoboost I used to have before the Taco. I had great power and mpg balance while still enjoying a nice exhaust sound from the v6 turbo.

What blows my mind is that even with the HP/TQ upgrade… the towing capacity went down!
Pretty absurd to add that much power and a new stronger frame, and not increase towing. Payload went up some, but not that significantly.

I love my 2019 tundra,
It might not half a flat screen t.v on the dashboard like the 2023,
But I can guarantee my truck will last longer to everyday wear and tear, and I won't have the electronic and turbo issue from these little engines there putting in these trucks,
That aren't even giving you that much better MPG.
Now if Toyota could do a true hybrid truck like the Prius that actually got you 30 to 40 MPG

I may be lucky but I bought a 2005 and it has been and still is flawless, performance wise with just regular maintenance (298,000 miles). No leaks, doesn't consume oil. I'm thinking like this guy on the 2024's though. Even though I know Toyota is on top of things ,I want to see how those turbos work out.

I share your concerns. They should be coming out with V6 engines too. Who the heck wants a truck with only 4 cylinders? Turbo is just another thing that can go wrong besides putting a huge wear on the engine. Glad I kept my V8 Magnum Dakota.

As a mechanic I agree as to never buying any vehicle after a major production change, it's not so much as reliability issues as it is to electronics, fitment and parts compatibility. Engineers are people too and they get things wrong all the time, I see it every day.

A 4 cylinder turbo in a truck? Nope. Maybe with a diesel, but not gas. Maybe the engine can give good power or speed, but I feel like it won't last 300k+ miles like the older ones.
I'll take a '21 with a V6, 6 speed manual.
Wait 3-5 years as with all new generations....there will be many problems to fix. Some folks love to be the $50k Guinea pig. And truck prices are crashing if you haven't noticed....better to wait and buy the repoed 3rd gens that will pile up
