    Sir, this video was the MOST helpful tool in getting my AC unit clean. I have the same model as the one you show first, and I had NO idea the cover even came off. Have been cleaning the filters for two summers but could tell performance was down. Getting the cover off, well, let’s just say I have a cat and a dog, and the fins were pretty dang furry. THANK YOU and please let me know how I can buy you a beer or a coffee for sharing this video. Seriously - I am so grateful.

      Just ran into an issue, replaced original hose as it broke, as well the part that snaps into the window cover, and the 5" inch hose is too small for the adapter that clips to the unit...

    • @ItsBrianHi
      @ItsBrianHi  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Your32Maker I had a hard time finding a cheap replacement for a hose that broke (because they cost too much from Sharp!). You have to find correct size and the correct degree of the curve too, but I did find one online. It was $38 bucks. Didn't fit exactly perfect but I was able to tape a bit of it on the adapter for the ac unit.

    Hey! Remember me? Well, I FINALLY took my Kenwood apart, and OMG what a mess! That "filter" I thought was blowing out? Well, it was grunge. I sucked an inch-plus-thick layer off the interior filter. Other than a crack in the plastic where I had to pry the cover off, she's humming along like new. Thank you again for posting that video. You saved us $500 or so. ❤️

    Awesome! Thanks for the video. We are in the meddle of a heat wave and my unit is acting more like a heater than an A/C. Yes, I have it on the right mode. I can see the dust inside, but I was afraid to use too much force to remove the cover. Now that I have it cleaned out it is working much better.

    Thanks for a good video. Made it much easier to remove the panel, although it was still somewhat difficult. Where the panel latches to the unit I pulled out to the side and forward at the same time for good results. As in his video start at the bottom and work up to the top. Philips screws (2) on the bottom ends of the unit. Thanks Brian!

    Thank you sooooo much for the video on how to take the front plate off to clean the Sharp unit.....We inadvertently forgot to put he filters back in after winter storage. It was running for several weeks without the filters, until we realized this. We have two cats that produce a lot of hair and dust. We couldn't believe our luck when we saw your utube video. We got the panel off without a hitch. We forgot to raise the lower louver before replacing it, and had to take it back off. We were worried that the motor would be affected eventually, and cause a fire or something...if we couldn't clean the coils. Thank you again for sharing your experience. BTW....We are a retired couple. So if we can do it anyone can. We love our Sharp portable unit!

      Thanks, it has been a year with so many changes and having a child makes the world just disappear! Makes you realize all the media all the complaints all the stuff the world jams down your throat are just worthless.Glad the comments could provide some insight into a quick solution. I had a bunch of cardboard boxes and just hacked one together since Sharp charges too much money for replacement parts. Also whenever you move the unit you can just make a new one to fit the new window. Overtime the tape on the cardboard will start to dry and flake, but I just taped it all over again. Also I should not I used a long stick or dowel and put it in the window to prevent anyone breaking in. Maybe you've seen people put long sticks in sliding glass doors to prevent them moving, same thing I made short ones and installed them whenever I put the vent in the window.

    I was just emptying the water on my Sharp model CV10MH and noticed all the dust on the filters and knew there had to be a way to clean it, I won't share how long I've had this 2nd hand unit. Thanks for for the instructions!

      Awesome! I've had mine for my gosh about 5 or 6 years now. Just got central air since we moved into our first home so I'm having a hard time thinking about selling these two units in the video :( but I haven't used them in months.
      I've had equal amounts of battles getting our central air hvac unit up to par. We had leaky ducts (old ducts), improper insulation, leaks on the top of the hvac unit (plenum), and a condenser fan that looks like it went through a nuclear war but still works. I really want to do videos on our house journey just need to get my computer working better to edit! And a newborn is making my priorities sway to her ;)

    Excellent video...saves us alot of frustration... A little tip... if your A.C is really dirty...spray some water or bleach on it first and then vacuum...all the dirt and grime will stick together and get sucked out much easier...
    We did the first one dry which hadnt been running, and then the second one which had been and was wet...the second one was considerably easier to clean

    Thank you for this sir. I will clean it tonight. So much easier to watch someone do it than read about it. Like others here....my unit won’t drain. I’m going to take it outside today, unplug it and gently and slowly lay it back and see if I can get anything out of it. The pump must be shot.....dunno. If anyone has a smarter fix I’d love to hear it. Thanks again Brian.

    THANK YOU! We rely heavily on our portable a/c units, but they need cleaning for sure, and your vid gave me the confidence I needed. QUESTION: On two of our units, what appeared to be disintegrated foam filter blew through the front vents (where the cold air blows out from). The units still work well, but I know they're each missing a filter. The manuals don't mention anything about this. Ideas?
    Thanks again; you're the man!

    • @ItsBrianHi
      @ItsBrianHi  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey, thanks for the post and compliment! So on the top where the cold air blows out are you saying there are pieces of foam coming out of it? Or are you saying that the filters for the intake (the screens that I took out in the video) are blown out/torn/disentegrated? I would replace the filter personally since it's better to filter the dirt and dust than let it into your a/c unit. I don't really know what will go wrong or when if there are no filters but just like the filter in your car, when it's dirty there is less clean air flow and less performance...See if you can find some cheap on ebay. What model # a/c unit do you have?

    • @recynd77
      @recynd77 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ItsBrian Thanks for the quick reply! Yes, the foam pieces were coming from the vent where the cold air comes out. I guessed it was some sort of secondary particulate filter. I didn't know I could open the front panel to look.
      We're currently using a Kenwood PAC C130EAC; my son has an off-brand unit that doesn't blow nearly as cold, but that's a whole different topic. ;)

    • @ItsBrianHi
      @ItsBrianHi  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Were you able to find the problem when you opened the front to clean it? If there is foam coming from the cold air vent it is probably from inside the unit where the foam seal or something has faded/worn and come apart. I'm assuming it's gray in color. HArd to say where it's coming from without opening it up.

    • @ItsBrianHi
      @ItsBrianHi  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is probably no big deal. Just keep it maintained and filters clean and out of sunlight but those foam seal break down with age.

    • @recynd77
      @recynd77 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ItsBrian No problem. I haven't opened the unit yet (probably won't until tomorrow), but I bet you're right...yes, the foam was gray-colored.
      You seemed to be a handy sort, and since I couldn't find anything about that filter online, I thought I'd ask you. Thanks again...if I discover anything surprising, I'll let you know. Cheers to you 😊

    I know this video is old, but do you (or anyone else) know a replacement hose that fits? I also can't figure out if it has a clockwise or counterclockwise rotation. The universal one from Home Depot was too big, but does fit over the base. I believe that one measures 5.9". I think I read somewhere that the Sharp one is tricky bc it's not the standard 5, 5.1, or 5.9, but closer to something like 5.3. Would love any input!

      Did you ever get rid of the knocking sound? Mine did that for a month then died. I think the exhaust fan motor is out. When I put the AC in exhaust mode, I hear some buzzing, with no exhaust air. When I put in in cooling mode, it woks for a few seconds, then shuts down with red and orange lights flashing in a certain pattern (different pattern than when the uni is full of water).

    This video was most helpful. My living room, where I use the AC, connects to my kitchen with a wall pass-thru. Even though I have a range fan with a filter, the odors from cooking contain oils and, when combined with dust, create gunk. I had been cleaning my removable filters by vacuuming them, spraying them with Fantastic, rinsing and drying them. I imagined that the internal components of the AC might also need a cleaning. My units efficiency had been gradually dwindling, despite these filter cleanings. When I pulled the cover off, I discovered that the top coil was about 80% clogged and the bottom coil was about 30% clogged. I was able to remove the gunk with a vacuum and a brush but I'm wondering if more can be done. I would probably need a solvent to remove any oil residue on the coils. Is there a safe way to do that? If not, my AC still runs much more efficiently than it did before. After cleaning, my uint cooled the room 2 degrees (82º to 80º) in 30 minutes when, before, it would have taken at least 6 hours and I could never get the room cooler than 77º. Almost as good as new. Thanks!

    • @johne9412
      @johne9412 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I just took mine apart to get to the back cover -- mine is the white one. To get the back cover off, follow the above for getting the FRONT cover off, which reveals the screws on the front of each side piece. Remove the grey side pieces -- 3 screws each from the front, you should see them and then the grey side pieces slide right out. That reveals 3 MORE screws holding the sides of the back cover on. Remove those. THEN get the 6 off from the rear and it should pry up from the bottom. Hope this helps somebody!

The unit should cool unless something is causing the cooling mechanism to not turn on. Did you empty the water reservoir (don't know if that could cause this). Cleaning the dust and dirt out of the machine will help it run properly but I don't see why it would stop if from cooling. I can't imagine it losing it's coolant unless you dropped or damaged it. I would guess it's electronics or something gave out. Please keep me updated post what the solution was to help me/other people with the same problem. Even try simply unplugging it for a bit and starting again or hit it hard on the side like the old TVs lol

    Quick question. I have the same CV-P10 AC system (white one) and have a hell of a time draining it. The instructions say to open the valve, attach the hose and then press power twice to start the drainage process. But, when you do that you just turn the unit off and on. I've tried double clicking.... and cannot get the drainage process to initiate this year. I've gotten it to work a few times over the years. but not this year. Any ideas? I love these AC's... but draining them is not simple.

    • @ItsBrianHi
      @ItsBrianHi  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jill, I know what you're talking about. My white A/C unit leaked earlier this year and I tried to drain it after (to make sure it was empty) and the same thing happened where it would not allow double clicking the power button. Since I need to take these units down for the winter I will try to get to this in the next two weeks and tell you if I find an answer. My thoughts right now are that maybe it would not let me drain because it is not full (from the leakage). But I'm not sure..

    • @icnjill
      @icnjill 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      sellyourgift That's what I think too... but I had one running most of the summer... but, granted, it's been sitting open for a month so evaporation may have dried it out. But I should have gotten some water out of it. I think I've been able to make the double click work maybe twice in the past five years. It's such a flawed system!

    My portable ac is blowing out warm air and I cleaned the filters and drained the water out yet it's still doing it?

    • @ItsBrianHi
      @ItsBrianHi  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Start with the simple things first like make sure it is set to cool and not fan or vent. Try power cycling it by unplugging and plugging back in after a few minutes (probably won't do anything but won't hurt) See the manual www.manualslib.com/manual/350093/Sharp-Cv-P10rc.html?page=31#manual - outside of that the unit may be older and have a leak in the refrigerant. MANUAL SAYS: "AIR CONDITIONER DOES NOT COOL PROPERLY • Is it set to FAN, DEHUMIDIFICATION or VENTILATION mode? Cooling does not take place in these modes. Change the MODE setting. • Are the fi lters clogged with dust? Clean and replace the fi lters. • Is the cooling coil frozen? No air will blow out if the cooling coil is frozen. Run the air conditioner in FAN mode with the fan speed set to "HIGH" until all ice dissipates. • Is the temperature set properly? • Is the window exposed to direct sunlight? Close the curtains or blinds to minimize solar energy heating the room. • Is the exhaust hose too long? For effi cient operation, make the hose as short as possible. The exhaust hose must not be twisted or bent"

    • @ItsBrianHi
      @ItsBrianHi  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's always a sad day when the hose or vent louver breaks :( I made vent louvers out of cardboard that I covered in packing tape. They last for a few years and are basically free. Measure your window, cut the hole for the hose, and cover it all with packing tape. Works pretty good for a few years until the tape wears out, then you can re tape it, or make a new one. Worth a try.

    Thanks for the very informative video - Do you have a link on how to install the window piece using the foam coreboard?
    Thanks!

    • @ItsBrianHi
      @ItsBrianHi  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I do need to make that video! For now you can use foam or what I did when I moved is used cardboard boxes cut up and taped to provide a thick blockage for the open window. I will explain briefly so that you can make one without waiting for my vid. I placed the plastic vent end on the bottom of the window, usually the window will have indents to keep it in place. Then cut cardboard (I would expand the box to make it flat) and cut the width and height of window opening from cardboard and tape it up with packing tape real good. I would double up with a couple pieces of cardboard for rigidity. Some carboard or foam is thicker so use whatever you can find that provides a good seal and block for the opening. Make sure the foam or cardboard is a little wider than the actually opening of the window with vent in it because it will fit in the indents and provide a better "seal". Ask me any questions you have if that's not clear enough for now.

    • @ItsBrianHi
      @ItsBrianHi  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also if you don't have the plastic vent end piece. I made my foam and cardboard cut outs with a circle cut out in the bottom just the right diameter to "screw" the exhaust hose in carefully (cause it can tear if you have too small a hole or use too much force).

    Do these units have a finite life for cooling - or if they are cleaned properly will they just continue cooling forever? I.E. is there some sort or coolant that needs to be refilled/serviced/recharged after several years even if kept clean?

    • @ItsBrianHi
      @ItsBrianHi  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They should keep cooling forever in theory but mechanical parts break down. The coolant should be in a closed loop and not need recharging unless there is a leak. If it is not cooling there is more likely a problem with the mechanicals inside or the air flow (blockage from the filter or dust accumulating). I haven't heard of anyone recharging these units and even when you hear of people recharging a car a/c unit it is usually from a leak which would need to be repaired before "recharging". Best solution is call the manufacturer ask them to give you a number of a local repair shop that works on your unit. Call them and ask questions since they are the experts, they will usually tell you whats the issue and give you an estimate to repair. If the repair is closer to the cost of buying a new one then I'd just buy a new one and sell that one for parts or scrap it. Let me know what you find!

With a baby due shortly I can't promise that it will get done :( - I ended up making a second one from a carboard box. I measure the window gap, cut two or three pieces of same cardboard to measurements and taped them all together using packing tape (brown or clear color). then I cut a hole for the one with only the hose and no end piece, and the other I just cut square since the end piece fit below it in the window. would you say adding an insulation material to the cardboard could help??

    • @ItsBrianHi
      @ItsBrianHi  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah for sure, the cardboard or foam core board is not that good of an insulator but neither is the factory plastic vent piece usually included with these portable ac units. I think insulating anything will help keep cold air in and hot air outside for sure. But my main use for the cardboard is to block the opening on the window since I did not have the factory plastic piece that came with it and on one unit I didn't even have the hose end piece.

    • @ItsBrianHi

      In thinking about it more I wonder if cutting a piece of rigid insulation they use inside walls would be a great alternative to the cardboard? You'd have to cover it since it looks pink and has a bunch of logos on it but they have high R value and are thick. I even thought about buying hvac ductin to replace my cracking portable ac vent hoses...We got a house with central air but the whole house needs insulation so I've been thinking of using my portable units and venting them straight through a hole i cut in the wall ,since we have crank style windows :( but again I think to seal up the gap in the window, use something with thick insulation will help. then insulate your vent hose but that's probably overkill - i just need to replace my hose and they cost too much money from sharp. As long as your hose is not longer than the manufacturer says it should work better since the hot air would not radiate from the hose before going outside...

    hows Air Con working
    and can it work in situation where outside temperature is 40c+?

      I still have the same two air conditioners and they work the same as they did when I filmed this. They work really good in temps in the high 70s or 80s (F). Once you go above that they work ok. 40 degrees C (104 degrees F) is pretty hot. These air conditioners will just cool the close area around you in that type of heat unless your home or room is verywell insulated so that the outside temp does not affect the inside too much. If it isn't insulated you will just feel cold air directly in line from the air flow of the air conditioner (maybe like 0-5 feet away from it) but outside of that the hotter it is outside the less likely this unit will cool a whole room.Let me know if you have any other questions :) drop me a like and sub

      What ac model and manufacturer is it? Try to find the instruction manual google it and look at the troubleshooting section do all those steps and see if it fixes it. Could be that a part is defective and needs servicing. How old is it and do you use it a lot?

    I don't think mine was meant to be opened the way I did it. Not that it was working beforehand but it looks broke too now.

      @ItsBrianHi  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      What model number is your unit so that people can be careful if they have the same model? Sorry to hear that. If it has the same latches and screws then it was meant to open and maybe too much force caused it to break. If it looks different than maybe it opens differently.

    • @Odbarc
      @Odbarc 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ItsBrian Oh, I knew it was a different model just by looking at it. It's a Garrison even, not Sharp. But the ideas weren't any different. None of it looked dirty. It's just not working so I kind of let the snapping noises occur.

    • @ItsBrianHi
      @ItsBrianHi  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah ok good to know so people who come here don't get scared to try taking apart the Sharp. So did you break the front of the Garrison air conditioner??!

    • @Odbarc
      @Odbarc 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ItsBrian Not so much. It sort of comes off but there's electrical stuff holding it together so it doesn't really come off-off so I figured I did something the wrong way.
      The ice-block tray came loose and I had to break it off but ice was never a problem.
      There's no cold air coming out and no water dripping out when it's on. I could only assume it's the condenser or whatever that needed cleaning but it looked fine once I had it open.

      I've owned mine for about 3 or 4 years and they've been consistent. Mine you have to sit within the fan radius to get cold, outside of that you get nothing. Again my home I rent has no insulation so the sun heats up the whole room here in Los Angeles. The A/C unit keeps whatever the fan radius is hitting cool nothing more. I was thinking if my house was insulated roof and walls it might keep the room cold but who knows...
