Really appreciate this video. I finally started trad archery at the ripe old age of 63. I've been practicing for 3 years with the intent to go hunting someday. This was my first season hunting with my trad bow. Haven't got close enough for an effective range shot but absolutely love being out there. I admit it was a frustrating process at times, as I was self-taught. I'm always learning but my confidence level is so much better now. I still struggle some days, but my misses are much better. Thanks again for the video!!
thank you for addressing this. I've got a few more years than you as this is my 50Th year bowhunting and my 44th year hunting with traditional gear. It's always bothered me when people call it a struggle stick. I call it a joyful stick. It's a joy just to shoot trad gear. Go to any mixed 3d shoot and the people laughing and having fun are always the traditional shooters. Thanks, and happy shooting
Been shooting for decades like you. Started with recurves and long bows, then compounds and have gone back and forth several times. I’d get sick of the new high tech contraption and go 180 degrees to a hickory self bow and cedar arrows, then back again a few years later lol. I also enjoy precision bench rifle at a thousand yards but actually lay awake at night thinking about early flintlock long rifles. Same type of thing I guess. With the “primitive” weapons it’s truly a struggle for me, sometimes I I’m just terrible. You nailed it though, the weapons are fine, I’m the problem. Without struggle there can be no growth. That’s why I keep coming back.
@@jimathybindlenim6359 that is my 1972 Damon Howatt Hi Speed.. 54@28.. still shoots like heck. My Father grabbed me that off a trading blanket at ETAR 16 years ago… great little shooter still.
@@michpatriot9097 I have seen a lot of new folks starting out overshoot actually. I give new folks even those switching from wheel bows a set of drills based on 12-20 arrows. The idea is not to train to the point of failure but stop irregardless once the drills are done… 6 warmup shots. 6 defined drill shots for various things. Like hook index or release. The 6 for confirmation and if they want 2 random.. this is a baseline mind you. When I shot a lot of 3D comp I never shot more than 12 a day to maintain things and always from a different position angle and distance with shooting for one arrow and moving on. No groups - but yes folks can overshoot and develop bad habits or range scars and injuries too! Less is more. If someone has an off day- hung up the bow and come back to it again the fol day.
I have to take some time to heal my bow elbow..blows up from drawing..already took a step moving down in # last summer..im going to limit my shooting when I go back to shooting..its so hard to quit even for a couple days.
@@michpatriot9097 highly recommend a Thera band you can find various ones on Amazon.. I had a work related shoulder injury and even a few minutes a day throughout the day helped and I was able to take it to work as well and do it there and slowly draw like my bow draw cycle. By no way am I telling you what to do medically or therapy wise but it helped so much. I’m sure you’re already on top of this sort of thing. Best of luck!

What are your thoughts on too much shooting?
