Get you a small boat and hit the beach. You don't have to go very far offshore for big fish up there. I used to watch a kayaker off Destin catch all kinds of pelagics. I even saw him hook into a sailfish.

I was on a 120,000 dollar boat with 5 and 600 rigs fishing those anchored ships. One of the deck hands on the ship dropped a line with a Gatorade bottle as a cork and 2 pieces of bacon as bait and pulled up a monster cobia. We didn’t get anything 😂 😂😂😂. I’ll remember that as long as I’m alive.

The first JC I ever caught was in a kayak, off the upper Texas coast about 1/2 mile out. Water was flat calm and clear. I didnt know what I had hooked. A huge swell came up beside my yak. I looked down and saw the fish I had hooked with a school of jacks in tow. Right behind them was a HUGE hammer head. Its head must have been 8' across. I almost cut the line but I didnt. An hour later and a mile out I landed the jack. The hook fell out, the hook was broke behind the barb.

Crevalle are very fun to catch in shallow water. They'll rake multiple runs out. Circle the boat. Very stout fish. A shame they're not better eating but we did eat some as a kid. Not too terrible sautéed in butter & garlic.

Jack's truly are the strongest, baddest jokers of the water. Permits and pompano are Jack's like you said. Amber Jack's have a very close relative in socal and Baja that go by yellow tail. They are also in New Zealand and they go by kingfish down there. But they are all such hard fighters. I have caught all of them except an AP or permit. And I believe amberjacks are the king of the family. When you hook a 50 lb reef donkey you are in for a ride. They give you every ounce of fight they got. And almost always live by a hole to run to to.

My dad cleaned the fish and cut blood lines out and I grilled it and it tasted amazing. I really think people like to lable fish a trash from generations passing it down that have never tryed to eat and say for them selves if it's good or not. Great content and love your channel.

I used to mess with those jacks years ago. All you had to do was wade out around the mouth of the bayou when the menhaden were dying, pick one up when he floated by, toss him out and hang on. Now they are just a pain in the rear end. Especially when you hook them out in the gulf and think you actually have something.Surprised you didn't stop at one of those freighters, sabiki up some bait and try for Cobia. It probably would have been a jack festival but you never know. Captain Collier has had some days around those ships.
