I know this video is a year old, I'm wondering what the insurance situation is in this area. I keep reading about insurance companies pulling out of the state because of the danger of wildfires. My wife and I are looking to retire to a smallish mountain town in a few years and we worry about this and also the availability of good medical care in the area. I'm trying to organize a trip up to ride in your Gold Country Cycling Challenge this year and then we can see this cute town ourselves.
I am trying to find the time to film an updated 2024 version. Until then, have you seen my "Cons and Cons" of Nevada County video? For over a year now the only option for fire insurance has been the CA Fair Plan and the rates are quite high, but also do vary greatly from house to house depending on many factors. I actually just got news today that AAA is now offering fire insurance to some homes. I had heard from an insurance agent a few weeks ago that some companies might be opening back up to cover fire insurance. Is your worry more about fires or fire insurance? Or both? We have a hospital in Grass Valley and many doctors of all kinds here. Auburn is not far for more choices. I hope this helps and call me when you come this way for the cycling event. There is an e-bike store next to my office!
Is there a need for Electricians in the Nevada City and Grass Valley area? Is it hard to find an electrical contractor in these areas or is it saturated?
That is such a good question! I wish I had a really clear answer for you... I would say there is a need here for truly skilled and reliable contractors of all kinds. We do have a lot of all types of contractors here and some are very good ones, but there are also not so good ones or good ones that are too busy and booked out or good ones that are unreliable. So if you are very skilled AND reliable that could set you apart. This county isn't great for career opportunities but I would say being a contractor of some sort would be the best route (compared to a tech career) as we are more rural and residents here need that kind of help, whether it's with a remodel or repair of some sort. We don't have a ton of new construction here so being a real estate agent I do see in home inspections that older homes often need electrical repairs or whole electrical panels replaced due to age. Also, it would make a difference if you are wanting to start your own company or work for an existing one....I'm not sure which has more opportunity... I wish I had a more definitive answer for you... I hope this helps...
There are more cons than pros to living here any more. Lived here for more than 35 years and the quality of life has diminished greatly because of the drugs, illegal pot growers, homeless people, and pan handlers at every street corner. There's nothing to do for those on limited income and for teens who aren't involved in sports. The local parks are a haven for drug deals and creeps. The restaurants are over rated and expensive, and good luck finding a place to park any time of the day. The weather is variable, but drought conditions make the forest a fire disaster waiting to happen. Every year we're surrounded by fires and smoke, making air quality horribly unhealthy. It's not a healthy place to live if you have allergies or respiratory issues. Rents are outrageous, if you're even lucky enough to find a decent place. Oh yes, finding a primary care doctor who takes new patients is non-existent. Trust me. Finally, some of the worst and angriest drivers you'll ever see. I'm ready to leave this County for a happier, healthier place.
Hi there, I often hear from people who have lived in a small town for 30 plus years say that they don't like it anymore and say it's not like it used to be. This is true of the whole world everywhere... nothing is as it was 35 years ago. Unfortunately drugs and homeless people has become an issue nation wide. The cities are far worse though. So while it may seem relatively worse to you from 35 years ago, it is way way better here than in any big city these days. I've heard from folks in San Francisco and Portland Oregon and compared to that we are truly blessed to be here. It is not my experience to see panhandlers at every corner. There is a lot for teens to do with activities connected to nature, which is what makes this county so amazing and a far better experience than big city life. I have friends with children of all ages and they love it here. I think we have so many amazing restaurants with such good quality local ingredients. I love good quality food and am grateful for the restaurant choices in both Grass Valley and Nevada City. The price of everything has gone up everywhere. I go to the annual events and see so many happy people. I could go over every single subject you mentioned but I can boil it down by saying I don't have the same experience as you on any of the above points. I have lived here about 7 years and I love it. I absolutely love it. And I have met so many amazing friends here. It's a wonderful community and a beautiful setting in nature. I don't mean to negate what you are saying, it's just not my experience, nor that of my friends who have lived here way longer than me. I wish you the best in finding a place that you love as well.
