People that were high schoolers in the 70’s have to remember radio stations that would play full albums on certain nights of the week at midnight. We were exposed to lots of great music back in the day ❤
I'm 63. I loved the Midnight Special. My mom hated it. LOLOLOL I just love your facial expressions when you appreciate the song. I'm so happy I grew up during the time!
Would rather suggest "Vanilla Queen" - the Live 1977 version! Golden Earring covered most genres in rock; pop, hard rock, AOR, new wave, blues, psyhedelia and prog rock. This version of Vanilla Queen features the great George Kooymans on guitar - the last 4 minutes take you to another dimension. Link: th-cam.com/video/Tc3_cmxCp2Q/w-d-xo.html It's sad that such a great band with their vast back catalogue is only remembered for Radar Love and Twilight Zone...
The Midnight Special, Don Kirshners Rock Concert and many more music shows were so awesome. I lived my childhood waiting with anticipation every week to watch these shows, I miss them and my younger days so much 🫤🫤
Also keep in mind this was before MTV or CMT came out. I also remember shows like American Bandstand, Solid Gold and Hee Haw that showed artists performing.
One of my favorite bands when I was younger. Another banger from them is a song called "The Mighty Quinn/ Quinn the Eskimo" , - Also " I came for you" AND "Spirits In The Night" All bangers IMHO.
The deuce was a popular hot rod 50s -60s, a souped up 32 Ford, Beach Boys Little Deuce Coupe. ZZ Tops Eliminator was a 33. Curly Whurly was also a modified car referance. Another Manfred Mann song Stranded (in Iowa)
Chris Slade when he still was sportin hair on that dome! Seriously underrated drummer who played with Tom Jones, MM, David Gilmour, The Firm and AC freakin DC. He's doing back up vocals too. Killer stuff here folks!!
I couldn't click on this fast enough! I had the 45 when it first came out and played it to death....lol. My first intro to Manfred Mann was in the 60's with "Do Wah Diddy Diddy"......not quite Earth Band yet. With the Earth Band, another one of their popular songs was a cover of Bob Dylan's "The Mighty Quinn/Quinn the Eskimo". Blinded By the Light was a cover of a Bruce Springsteen song. Thanks for the reaction Steven......loved it!
I'm 67. I've heard this song on the radio for decades. So unique and rich in musical elements. I've heard Bruce do this many times. I have NEVER seen this video until today. thank you Seton Studios for the great review. Peace.
"this might be one of the coolest......" Eyup. I couldn't wait to watch your reaction to this one. Isn't it cool that different generations can appreciate the same tunes?
Growing up in the 1970s and 1980s you knew every week or two a new hit song or two would come out. It seemed like it would never end, but alas..it did.
This is actually a Bruce Springsteen tune, but almost no-one knows the Boss' version, cuz Manfred and the band took this and made it their own - one of those times when a cover far outshines the original (no shade to the Boss, his original is awesome too). Great choice, and terrific reaction as always - cheers from Canada!
You got me pumped brother and I've heard this song 1000 times. I'm only now in my late 30s able to break these songs down with you and really appreciate the true brilliance of them.
What really stood out to me is that it actually sounds like he was saying deuce instead of douche, which proves, it can be done! I also appreciated this live version, which sounds better than the studio, surprisingly. Thank you for this.
I still have this album, The Roaring Silence. It's incredible. A banging instrumental is "Waiter There's a Yawn in My Ear." I was going to suggest some more, but just get the album and play it, because I cannot choose any song without listing them all.
I actually saw them on this tour. I could be wrong, but I think it’s the time they toured the USA. They opened up for Kansas and The Edgar Winter Group. They kicked ass.
I was a big concert goer and album collecter in the 70's and on .....and on . I saw Mafred Mann at the Derby Eve Jam along with Bob Seger . THEY WERE PHENOMINAL ! THE ROARING SILENCE AND CHANCE IS A MUST HAVE FOR YOUR MUSIC COLLECTION ! I was so fortumate to be a teenager in the 70's and music RAGED until a little passed 2000 . Singers and bands now are NOTHING compared to music back then . RECORD COMPANIES AND THE COMPUTER KILLED MUSIC . Burying singles WRECKED MUSIC ! PK
Like another viewer, I saw The Manfreds playing live a couple of months ago. They sounded incredible! A lot of the set included blues tracks but they also played quite a few hits. Every number was superb. I hope we'll be hearing 'The Mighty Quinn'' here soon.
In the 80s I was in high school, a track star, and the 84 Olympics were in LA. Manfred Mann had a song called "Runner". My blood still gets pumping when I hear it.
Hi Steven...saw MM live on his"Demolition Tour" back in 1984...one of the best concerts I ever experienced. They have so many great tunes...👍🙋🏼♂️ Btw Manfred Mann is playing the keyboards, the singer is Chris Thompson
They were around forever. I remember hearing Do Wah Diddy on the radio way back in the day when they were just Manfred Mann. I think Jack Bruce (of Cream) played with them then. They never quite achieved the status of other far less talented bands, they just kept cranking out masterpieces. So damn good
Manfred Mann was a great British rock band from the 60's. They had some great songs including "Do Wah Diddy Diddy" "Pretty Flamingo", "Mighty Quinn", "5-4-3-2-1" & "Sha La La". Manfred Mann's Earth Band is an English rock band formed by South African musician Manfred Mann later in 1971. Their hits include covers of Bruce Springsteen's "For You", "Spirit In The Night" & "Blinded By The Light" which was a big hit for them in 1976. Interesting Note: Manfred Mann changed part of the lyrics in the the chorus, where Springsteen's "cut loose like a deuce" is replaced with "revved up like a deuce. The lyric is a reference to the 1932 V8-powered Ford automobile, which enthusiasts dubbed the "deuce coupe".
Manfred was born and raised and studied music at university in South Africa. My senior school music master at my Cape Town school was a classmate of his at uni, but Manfred moved to England to escape the Apartheid regime when he was about 20, I think. I first heard him play while I was still a treble scholar at junior school in London. He was in a jazz-blues duo called the Mann-(something) Blues Brothers. This must have been in '62 or '63. I'm told he's still touring, at 84 yrs of age. ❤
Steven!! I'm so glad you took this suggestion. I'm struggling right now because my daughter is moving to Arizona on Friday. (I live in Washington State.) I was lying here awake at 5 am and this made my day! I love this song and part of its fascination for me are the CRAZY lyrics. Love you and your channel!
Great band with many great albums tp hear! This is the album cut so much better than the radio cut, MMEB one of the best bands you never heard of fortunately I have followed them since the late 60's
The singer, Chris Thompson recently retired. Manfred (keyboards) had 2 versions of his pop group, '64-69, an acid jazz band, '69-'70 (Manfred Mann Chapter Three) and the Earth Band who still tour today. Manfred is my all-time favorite arranger.
Let's Gooo! One of my favorite all time tunes. Tragically Hip New Orleans is sinking studio version please 🙏 Great reaction and Peace out Steven ☮️ ✌️ 🙏
Many artists would flop on a Midnight Special program these days. Back then you had real talent or you didn't make it. There were so many amazing performances live on the midnight special from across the music spectrum. I was blessed to have grown up watching it. There are talented artist out there these days but far too many that fake their abilities.
Manfred Mann has one of my favorite songs in three different decades. 60's - The Mighty Quinn 70's - For You 80's - Runner You may know Doo Wa Diddy. They actually do a fantastic cover of Bob Marley's Redemption Song.
This version is so exceptional that it immediately made you forget that it was an original song by BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN. Another MMEB masterpiece to listen and to do a sound check: "Waiter, There Is A Yawn In My Ear" (from the same album, 'The Roaring Silence', 1976). Incredible musical performance. The audio producer that you are will have an earful... Satisfaction guaranteed! Thanks.
One of my favourite albums is Nightingales and Bombers by Manfred Mann's Earth Band- first track on the album is Spirit in the night but entire album is brilliant! Highly recommend you give it a listen - Visionary mountains another track worth exploring. The whole album is worth giving a listen to though.
You will love this ❤❤❤ now let's go... I've never seen this version before and I thought the studio version was great. I'm with you, Steven, this was a masterpiece. Thanks for the reaction.
The greatest performance I have seen in my 66 years is "Wheel in the Sky" by Journey. Live from Osaka Japan 1980! Steve Perry's intro and the bands interaction with the concert goers is EPIC!
This is one of my favorites from my youth, then I have many. If you liked this from The Midnight Special try Sanford Townsend Band's 'Smoke From a Distant Fire.' A one hit wonder.

FYI this is a Bruce Springston song.. Manfred Mann also did a cover of this and "Spirit in the Night" another Bruce cover.
Now you know why us that grew up in the 1970’s are constantly disappointed at the state of “music” these days!
You said it my 70's brother, we had they best music barr none back then. Midnight Special was a Saturday night fav.
I agree. In fact, I remember when I first thought, " what happened to music?"

This is one of those covers that is better than the original. In my opinion. Yeah, that era of music will never be matched great reaction.

Radar Love by Golden Earring, another great group from the 70's.
i was going to suggest this one also

@Jude_196
Oh yes 😉
I did too I lived in a small town and had to dive a 100 miles to see a concert so this was the only way we could see live music!
Yes yes and yes
And Runner from the 80's. So underrated. Every distance runner EVER has listened to this song.
All covers.
@@stevenseul361 So what?? It's a tribute to the originals so where's the problem?

Lead singer is Chris Thompson,. He was the voice of humanity on Jeff Waynes War of the Worlds and sang Thunderchild. He also did the live concerts
The drummer is Chris Slade. He shaved his head and joined AC/DC.
Back in the day a lot of bands didn’t use drum risers. I kinda liked it. Made it feel like the drummers were closer and more of a part of the band.
It’s a cover of a Bruce Springsteen song! Very well done!!!
The midnight special every Friday night, thanks for keeping the great music alive

Yep, I like their version of spirits in the night better, also written by Bruce Springsteen
Thanks for putting me in the nobody category. I was listening to Bruce’s version before Manfred Mann butchered it.
Bruce hated this version, maybe cause it was a hit before he had any real success.
