I came here because I was afraid that a friend of mine could have adhd but she is to ashmed to go to a doctor to check it. So I was wondering how one can be sure about it. But after looking into the links I tried the quiz for myself and my score was 85%. Is that normal??

I'm just accepting that I probably have ADHD. I don't need to see a doctor, I'm fine with just self diagnosis because in the end it doesn't matter - but it does explain a lot of things to myself. And kind of knowing this is why I can't do things like follow recipes due to forgetting what step 1 is while trying to do step 1 helps - I kind of understand this is a structural limitation of my brain and I can stop beating myself up over it. I'm also WAY more aware of the fact that I'm always trying to do a dozen things at the same time, and I can kind of focus a little better when I'm aware I'm doing this. So yeah, I'm fine with my self diagnosis. It helps explains how my brain works and gives me some extra tools to manage it.

Yes! The same with me. Also if I find that I do have ADHD or something like this, there will at least be some hope that life will get better. Otherwise it feels I'm overreacting and just my personally defect.

I u sweet and tht parents don’t want to think their child might have some sort of mental disorder but the reality is tht many ppl do. I mentioned it to my mom as well and she had basically the same reaction and basically just laughed. So I totally get how u guys feel

One thing that really hurts as a person with ADHD is being accused of "selective hearing" I'm NOT "hearing what I want to hear" I start daydreaming and certain words or phrases simply bring me back to the real world! It's DIFFERENT.

The one thing I'm scared about (in getting diagnosed) is the 'having symptoms before 12 years old'. Like... I don't remember that kind of details of my life, my memory is jumbled already.
Plus, I think the symptoms I am experiencing now have become more obvious during high school (which I am in now), especially over covid.
Primary school and my life before that have been so easy that no one noticed if I had symptoms or not.

only sence 1 year that I know what ADHD is and that I'm looking into, before I just through I was "normal" and didn't bother noticing or remembering those things.
I can ask my mom if I was forgetful as a child but she have an horrible memory and I don't think she would give me a real response.

My best friend that I love more than anything is not talking to me anymore because I’m so annoying and I always say things that I instantly regret. I feel like anyone and everyone around me dislikes me because of everything I do. I’m also struggling with severe anxiety and crippling depression, and I’m in a never ending rollercoaster of self deprication and belittlement. My mom is a nurse practitioner so I thought she would understand and let me see a doctor about getting diagnosed, but she just says, “I don’t want my child being loaded up with drugs” I told her that getting diagnosed doesn’t necessarily involve medication, and atleast knowing will help. I know no one is probably going to see this, I just wanted somewhere to rant.

My third psychiatrist (who I was seeing for depression) randomly mentioned that I might have ADHD, but then said that at least one of my other psychiatrists should have noticed it if I have it and then just went off on to another subject. I have thought about it a lot and I definitely have a lot of the symptoms. I want to be assessed for it but I am afraid of seeming like an attention seeker, even dough my friends (who have ADHD) think I have it too because of the way I, for example, hyperfocus on something in conversations, take over the entire conversation and ramble on and on for a really long time. Even now I am procrastinating by writing this, as I should be practising for the exam I have tomorrow... I soooo wish I’d realised and got diagnosed younger than my early 40s as a lot of my life is a mess and the medication for ADHD significantly helps 92% of those that take it.

My favorite response to the “everyone is a little adhd” is this:
After a difficult workout, a completely healthy person will likely be breathing really heavily, likely even wheezing. This doesn’t mean they are asthmatic. Having asthma means you have a fundamental physiological difference that makes breathing hard for you. Having asthma also means that breathing problems are a lot more frequent and serious, instead of temporary heavy breathing after finishing a 5k, it might be a total inability to breath while just walking to the mail box. Having adhd means I have a fundamental physiological difference that makes attention regulation hard for me. Having some of the symptoms to some degree sometimes isn’t the same as experiencing it 24/7 to the degree adhd people do.

I would bite my nails, always tap a pencil or click my pen, couldn’t sit still in a chair or shake my leg the whole time I sat. I stopped doing these things but the leg shaking is still present, but I notice it now. I love my hyper focus because in case of an emergency…I am prepared 😂 I can have a conversation with a friend in a loud place but then unwillingly my ears tune out and tune into another conversation near me. Psychiatrists have an evaluation list of questions to ask you for an adult diagnosis. But before doing that, I would google & research medical articles on lists of ADHD symptoms. Copy a list or two out and check off the symptoms you do see yourself having. Also decide which ones are causing the most problems in functioning in your day-to-day life.
This will help in your discussion with the doctor who can diagnose what is going on.

Is it possible that somewhere deep in the subconscious mind there is resistance to trying to control or reverse the effects of ADHD? Someone older like myself (age 70) having lived my whole life ignorant of ADHD but not the aftereffects of when I seriously screwed up. Then I would accept that I have a problem (dammit I did it again) and move on like nothing happened. Now I am aware of my ADD and how it interferes with life every minute of every day. When I try to correct a situation or prevent a screw up, and fail, I become very angry. Angry enough to harm myself by slapping myself or banging my hand against the table because I knocked something over again. I discovered that pain, causes me to reboot and regain control. But I know when the pain leaves, I will screw up again. and again, and again.
There was something comforting by not knowing what I did or said. When I was younger and very depressed (because of the ADD) I felt safe at the bottom of the pit because while there, I felt nothing could get any worse, no one could hurt me, and there was nothing for me to screw up.
I could not understand why other people treated me like the village idiot, blamed me when something went wrong or tried to make me say or do things for their entertainment. I am now better than when I was younger. Slowly, very slowly gaining control. I have a long, long way to go.

My parents mistook it has bad behaviour but we are now starting to uncover some underlying issues. I’m in the middle of getting diagnosed with ADHD. Please remember that just because your symptoms don’t match the exact criteria, it doesn’t mean you don’t have it. It’s important that you get the right diagnosis and treatment.

I have decided from watching this and another video, that some big questions in my life may actually have an answer. Questions like; why I can't drive a car because my brain seems to wander off in the act, and I lose focus on that I am driving; why I get so focused on something that it feels like someone is pulling my skin when they try to get my attention away from the thing I am focusing on; why I only enjoy creative things and people talking about topics that engage my intelligence and everything else feels like I am lost - and so forth. Until I get a diagnosis, I am not sure, but from these videos it seems to me that ADHD would explain a lot of things. Thank you for making this. It may be my first stepping stop to getting some clarity about these things that plague me, and make me feel like a failure most of the time.
