- ISM created the Barbados By Locals™ series to provide you a quick look at Barbados through the eyes of those who know it best. Bajan Kevin Farmer, Curator of History and Archeology at the Barbados Museum, shares the chilling story of the Chase Vault. And takes us to the scene of a supernatural mystery that once shocked the entire island, and echoes to this very day.
ISM specializes in travel and lifestyle marketing for clients like Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, Emirates airline, American Express Travel, and Best Western Hotels. We created the idea "The Authentic Caribbean" as a way to define and promote Barbados, our former client. Last fall, on a visit, we created and shot this series for them on our own nickel with famous Bajan photographer and videographer Ronnie Carrington. We didn't want these great stories to go to waste. So here they are. If you haven't been, you owe yourself a visit to Barbados. It really is The Authentic Caribbean.
The vault is vacant now. After the burial of Thomanisa in 1819, sand was put on the floor to detect any footprints. Eight months later, in 1820, the vault was re opened and the coffins were found scattered again. This was about the fifth time this had happened, and this caused a stir that ended in all the bodies being buried elsewhere. If the bodies were still in there, we probably would have put a camera in eventually.
Goosebump
I don't know what to think of this whole thing but I was reading up on this story and one of the coffins was standing up against one of the walls of the tomb and the sand that was place on the ground of the tomb was untouched.
lol they could make an awesome horror movie based on this
It's worth noting that not all the coffins were led.
The youngest girl was burried in a tin casket, and the origional occupant (a woman of the prior owners family) was burried in a wooden one.
It's also worth noting after the chase father died, from that point on any horse present at a percession at the church would go insane.
Horse? As in the animal?
Magnetic field. Maybe there is something in the earth that reacts to the lead. Electric jolt, gases. Many possibilities other than supernatural.
But I do love a good ghost story and the Chase Vault is one of my favs.
That explains some of the disarray but not all of it...there were times when they weren't just thrown about, but moved in very specific positions..magnitism would not explain how the oldest (wood) coffin would go from being on one side of the crypt to being stacked on top of another coffin on the other side.
@@dakotastein9499 I guess it will continue to be a mystery.
But then why this kind of incident didn't happen with other vaults?
People's Almanac from '75 has an article about this & one of the explanations that used to go around was that the men that carried the coffins had really strong armpit odor that ended up moving the coffins later on.
I love Barbados
The earths gravitational pull is magnetic!
My dad, one of eight children; use to live in a boarding house in North Carolina. They were told that eight families previously lived in the house and moved out. That would've told me something then. Lol. My dad said they would smell cigar smoke; when no one smoked. People in the front yard laughing and talking, only to look out the window and see no one. They found their dog dead in the front yard. This seems like a scary and dangerous ghost story. My dad's family later found out that the boarding house they were living in, use to be a saloon where people were drinking and gambling. Many people were murdered over money. My dad's family moved out quickly. They were homeless for a while. People should try to find out the history of any place, before moving in. I'd rather be homeless with other live people; than live in a house where there will never be peace🤫🙄🤐🤔
There are completely unexplainable things in this world that are beyond human understanding and the Chase family vault mystery seems to have of indeed gained that reputation . A good friend of mine used to rent a very lonely but beautiful house in the Monmouthshire countryside where one could very clearly hear somebody walking up the stairs at night when there was nobody there and I too witnessed hearing this myself in the summer of 2015. The strange unaccountable noises and upstairs doors slamming on their own scared my friend too much in the end and she eventually moved back to her Newport home town . The house was pulled down in the end as I guess it had become inhabitable ?.
Lead coffins? maybe the spirit cant get out
The last time they opened the vault with caskets in it, one of the skeletons had seemingly punched ones of its arm out of its wooden coffin, leaving a dangling bony arm sticking out of the side of the coffin. That is when they abandoned the vault.
bro are you active???now?
@Kuku (Hindi) ha bhai for sure.
@@TonaldDrump兀 Yes. I am still active.
@@MachineKing1313 yayy bro💖💖
Dark secrets from the unknown 😱 a spirit is not happy perhaps?
@labros0. Cameras weren't invented yet. This was back in 1807-1820s. The colonial Governor from England to Barbados couldn't figure it out. The family eventually thought some sorcery er something was at work here and all tombs of the family in the Chase vault were taken out. In the 1970s two British tourists to Barbados took two stone souvenirs from the same empty vault. They mailed them back explaining what they had done and stated the last couple years of their lives had been hell.
think i have heard stories about this but nothing but stories is what i took it for lol
oooo digital cameras in 1812 nice...
Some researchers doubt this tale because it is not mentioned in the press at the time. What do you think?
Clearly a case for scooby doo....I bet it's those meddling kids.
Is it possible that a underwater spring is filling the tomb with water intermittently?
So appearently Barbados have a history of some pretty big earthquakes. Couldn't that be the explanation on how those coffins moved around and why there was no footprints in the sand?
Then why only chase family coffins moves ,why not others coffins?
1. This vault is in Barbados, not California. But that's Irrelevant to the earthquake theory.
2. IMO, for an earthquake to flip such heavy coffins over and stand them on end, that would have to be one heck of a quake! And like mentioned by fusionhunter, only the coffins in this vault were disturbed.
3. One of the more believable theories is ground water seepage, but you would think it would still occur, and would be noticed by the people going to look at the vault. Awesome story no matter what!
Check it out. The Parish of Christ Church (Anglican) Parish Churchyard.
I saw the chase vault already
put the camera inside the perception that occurs . good idia
@188metalhead881 the theory is that the lead coffins prevented the bodies from decaying quickly, and the souls of the people in those coffins were angry about that
My understanding is that there's only one known record of this event, and given so many officials were said to be involved I'm certain that if this were true, there would be more written records available.
There are more records about it, but the most famous is the last one because people were so tired and scared of not knowing that involved everyone possible
to those who want to solve the mystery...there was no earthquake or flooding in that area...
its time to call the ghost busters
Remember there wasn't that kind of technology back in the day !!!
@labros0 Camera? This was back in the colonial days ~ the 1820s.
why cant they just fix some cctv camera to see wats happening
The coffins were moved and buried separately near the turn of the 20th century.
ravinder singh cause it was in the 1800’s
They were just playing a game of twister, is that so hard to understand?
Tremors aren't going to make coffin stand up right against a wall, I'm not saying it's supernatural activity but I cant see a tremor doing that.
And it would have had to be more than one tremor because they found the coffins disturbed on more than one occasion
i think there were human activity involved. some really smart guy chopped down the concrete seal, moved the coffin with his buddies, smooth out the sand, and seal the seal back with some cement. and each time a coffin was added, he accept the challenge and re shuffle the coffins again.
Well, I thought I was gonna sleep tonight...
why dont they put a camera in?
No surprise to move the coffins & put down fresh sand as you leave, How to get in though !, That's another matter, !!!.
Thom in Scotland
Imagine using today`s technology to find out
But other coffins near by weren't affected only the coffins in the chase vault.
@qterfly The British colonial government couldn't figure it out, so they took all the coffins out, and sealed the vault up so the storey goes.... It is located at the Parish Church for Christ Church in Barbados.
It's a tourist attraction. I don't think they'd even consider it. One of Barbados oldest and greatest legends shot down by modern technology. Why ruin a good thing?
ok sand is little bits of rock in an earth quake as the floor would be level when its shakeing all it would do was jump around and fall back level on the floor again the coffins being big would fall off things and stand up on walls and sick like that the sane being that small would stay on the floor if they took a photo of the sand and then magnofide it then took another after it had moved they would find it would be diffrent but you tell me anyone you know that can tell if a grain of sand
yeah, the reasons u stated definitely make sense, i was just eliminating those posibilities with my local knowledge of the area, but yeah as for any more possible causes? i have no idea, it could just be a well told hoax for all we know, i havent actually seen the graves in person or the slide marks, i would like to tho haha... not that the slide marks would still be there tho
If it were an earthquake as some are implying,it would have had to have been more than one major earthquake 1st of all because on more than one occasion, the coffins were out of order and secondly,if it were earthquakes, why wasn't the tomb itself damaged..if it was due to flooding, why wasn't the sand they placed inside the tomb disturbed
because theywant to create a topic legend and not to solve the mystery(if it is really a mystery to them and they haven;t created it or do it by themselves).this will attract more tourist and more tourists=profit
HOW WOULD THEY KNOW NONE OF THE OTHERS WERE OPEND AT THE TIME SO HOW WOULD THEY KNOW THIS WAS THE ONLY ONE OPEN
Earthquake
They should of tried CHAINING down the coffins to see what would happen.
Earthquake?
@labros0 Well.... the coffins were removed and buried in regular graves
cameras' , Infared red lights. batteries..mystery solved.
Earthquake??
@WWII4444 yeah,ok,i know the story too.It doesn hurt to try though,it doesnt cost anything.I'm sure if sthing is there,it's worth the hustle.I'm just saying that if u really want to get to the bottom of sthing, and u arent just trying to attract tourists,u try evrthing u can,and i think a camera is ghosthunting101
Well, that is according to the witness accounts and what the tour guide said lol.
because they didn't have cctv back in the 1800s
Is can be solved at this time by the use of CCTV .
At that time there no discover of cctv
Barbados by Locals™ - Mystery of the Chase Burial Vault yep read it 10 times earthquack related
earthquick?
well, the chase vault is on top of a hill in christ church, so its highly unlikely to flood, and there was only one earthquake that i am aware of that was actually experianced in barbados, it was in 2008 and there was abselute pandemonium because no1 had been in an earthquake before lol, people were running everywhere. it was so small that no significant damages were recorded. the chase vault legend is a pretty old story. im not implying that it was supernatural or anything tho
Huge magnets lol
were the coffins pure lead, meaning 100%. If other metals were present they could be moved by a magnetic field...
I'm thinking earthquakes? My mind wants to think otherwise.. Supernatural etc.
I think its a ghost doing it i think its haunted that place
I hope so too!
What's to stop someone from just dropping more sand afterward?
Why does it always have to be ghosts?
I USE WHAT EVER THE FUCK IM IN AT THE CASE
Is there any logical explanation for this mystery???
Barbados isn't on the Bermuda triangle. Barbados does not = Bermuda. Barbados is 400-500 miles off the coast of Venezuela. Bermuda = off the coast of North Carolina.
No I'm not going on full moon I don't want to be eaten by vampires
because it happened over a period of years with this being the only affected tomb. take off caplocks its hard to read
They were moved to separate graves.
earthquake? idk
has rolled over on its side and moved they wouldent end of story its moved from a tremor
yes but you are on a fault line and still do have quakes easy to see this is what dose it
@cplusplusish ~ Neither, apparently, is your spelling.
Pfft simple. I know who moved those coffins... IT'S THE MOLE PEOPLE! AAGGH!
@72issues do you even know what degenerate means or you heard it from the grown ups and you keep saying it over and over?
u dont know bajans lol, the barbadian government is the laziest i know of, im even surprised that there was 1 written record. i would figure it would only be in the news paper. trust me, when i say that the bajan government takes like 2-3 years to repave a road that would be done over night in america. its rediculous. they take so long that they need to re- lay the gravel several times because it gets washed away by rain
maybe there was an earthquake....
put a camera in it or chain coffins down
maybe there was an earthquake
Every single time?
there is no Historical recordings of earthquakes in Barbados around those times. Also had to be a massive earthquake to throw around lead coffins each time. They were throw around at least 3 different times.
swamp gases.
I personally believe that the deceased should be buried, and I dont mean cremation.
Leaving them in coffins in a place like that isnt the correct way. The reason why the coffins were moving may be the act of supernatural forces.
I believe they were buried right after the chain of incidents? Nothing else happened after that did it? Why didnt they bury them in the first place and let their bodies suffer. Respect the deceased please, this shall be a lesson for all.
High water table, like many places in the world you can't bury underground because of the ground water. Its not about their beliefs and whats right, its about not having to rebury your relative until they disolve in the water every year. You would bury your relative in 4 feet of water soaked dirt?
XD
