  • Also known as “The Huron Carol”, this is considered Canada’s oldest Christmas carol, probably written in 1642 by Jean de Brébeuf, a Jesuit missionary to the indigenous people at Sainte-Marie. Written in the native language of the Huron/Wendat people, the song's original Huron title is "Jesous Ahatonhia" (Jesus, he is born). The melody of the carol is based on a traditional French folk song, "Une Jeune Pucelle" (A Young Maid). It appears in a number of modern hymnals, with the English lyrics written in 1926 by Jesse Edgar Middleton.
