I wish I could afford the more expensive ones. But since watching you here on TH-cam, I have found so many different places to purchase yarn from and just watch for sales. You have definitely opened my eyes to brands, variety and businesses to get my yarn. Thanks again, Crystal for being you 💜💜💜💜

You know Crystal - One thing that your videos have taught me is what a wide variety of yarn that we have to choose from. We also learn how you utilize them in your projects. No matter what yarn you choose, you always match the yarn to the needs of your project very, very well. Another thing you are able to do is to use the yarn as your starting point and create a project around it. And that's what we have to learn to do as well. I think we all have to choose according to our needs, our budgets, and our own personal preferences. I DO prefer natural fibers that are more expensive, but that's just me. That doesn't mean I won't use acrylic. Far from it! it just means that it is a personal preference. But shaming someone for using a particular type of yarn is just nutso.

Been crocheting for almost 60 years. Back in the day, I was grateful for Super Saver! It enabled me to make hats and mittens for my kids and blankets for the family. Store brands and budget yarns have come such a long way that even tho I can now afford top of the line, I prefer browsing the shelves at Michael’s and JoAnn’s. Happy Crafting!!

I choose to use the value yarns due to the fact that I am on a fixed income. When I started crochet, that is all I knew. Thru living vicariously through you I am able to see and learn about other yarns. I didn’t even know there was such a thing as hand dyed yarns. I love that you love these, because I get to look at all of these beautiful yarns. I’m glad you love and can afford these. When you gave away the $300 worth of hand dyed yarns, I did not enter, because I don’t know if I’d know what to do with it. I wanted it to go to someone who appreciates it more.
It’s like a car. Some people like to have luxury cars. Some like economy cars. Personal choice. I have a luxury car and use economy yarns.

In my opinion it's no different than purchasing with a credit card that you really can't afford. I've never skipped a payment, but I have purchased with a credit card, knowing I'll be paying for it later, in more ways than one. I try not to do that these days, but as things are getting more and more expensive, it's getting harder and harder to stay on budget.

I love Big Twist! I’ve used it for blankets and sweaters. It doesn’t feel super soft until you wash the item. Then it feels just as soft or even softer than some of the more expensive yarns.

Crystal, I think your POV is right on and closely aligns with mine. I like using value or inexpensive yarn when trying a new stitch or pattern. If I want a "better" yarn for a special project, I'll save my pennies toward that. One nice thing, the quality of yarns has come a long way in the last fifty years. For me yarn and crochet bring me comfort. The last thing I want is to stress about what someone thinks of the yarn I'm using. That is their problem not mine.

Love it, every stitch made with that yarn is a pleasure. But more often I crochet and projects may be larger, such as blankets, and require several thousand yards, or I want to make 3 or 4 blankets as gifts, plus I want the item to be wash and dry. Thank goodness for value acrylics in hundreds of beautiful colors! It's all wonderful and I'm grateful and appreciate the amazing variety available... Something for everyone!!! For me I use a yarn that fits what I’m making. If I’m crocheting a throw rug or a syringe stiff bag a good value yarn is essential! If I’m knitting a soft flowie capelette to go with a formal dress I’ll use a soft flowie style yarn that’s expensive because it gives me what I want in the project. I also look for sales! It has to be worth the money to me at the time.

We are so lucky, today, to have so many options available. There is definitely a time & place for both. I, like you, use both. The value yarns are great for blankets & afghans that will be lovingly “beat up” by kids. Or adults that cannot spend the time caring/washing/drying the natural fiber blends. If it’s a special project that will be gently used & cared for, I will look for the pricier yarns. In my poor days struggling to make ends meet, I did not have the option to buy high end yarns. Now that I have option to spend much more, I still look for the sales. It’s a quest to find the right yarn for the right project at the right price. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Whatever brings you joy. And shame on anyone who feels the need to judge either choice. Thanks for the share.

Love the POV,it absolutely depends on your circumstances but more importantly is what you are craving and for who. Much of what I do is to donate to different causes and all of them say to use yarn that can be washed and dried and that limits what you can use there are even acrylics being made that say handwash that I cannot use. Now if I am making it for someone I know and can take care of something I use expensive nice yarn on yes I truly enjoy using yarns that have soft natural fibers that knit and crochet up into delicate stitches and patterns. So even if you are the biggest of yarn snobs I hope you have a true crafter heart and would still produce something for those less fortunate.

For me it all depends on what I'm making. Value yarns are good for presents for people that don't like complicated care instructions or projects that use a lot of yarn. Expensive yarns are nice for scarves or warm shawls or very nice presents that are going to someone who will take care of it with love. Usually I make those more for myself than anyone else, nice silky scarves or things like that. Everyone creates for different reasons and ultimately it's their call, there's no sense in shaming others for their choices, we should lift each other up as creators and crafters, no matter what we choose to use. Have a lovely weekend Crystal!

I love all yarns, and most of the yarn i use is budget yarn because Im the single income for my household and I only make minimum wage - i can't afford to get even some of the nicer value yarns like carron cakes most of the time. There are some fantastic value yarns out there that are an absolute joy to work with and wash up to be quite soft. But there are also a lot of yarns that stay stiff and scratchy - it all depends on the yarn. But, as someone with really bad sensory issues, I have a difficult time wearing the things i make with most value yarns. I still love working with them, they are almost all i ever use, but I really do enjoy the few times a year where I save up enough to get a nice super wash wool to make something for myself.
Expensive yarns are worth what they are charged for, because the fibers are more time consuming to acquire and spin, and most of them are hand dyed. Value yarn is able to be priced so low because they are easily mass produced. That doesn't mean one is inherently better than the other. Each person, and even each project, needs a yarn that is suited to it. and 9 times out of 10 a value yarn is just as effective and beautiful as a luxury yarn

Ditto! 👍 I couldn't have said it better.
I use what I like for what ever project I am working on. And I love trying new yarns. I look for the material I need for my project. Some projects are minimal costs, some projects more expensive.
In the end the projects still come out beautiful, and the recipients are happy.

Totally agree with you. I would dearly love to try the more expensive yarn but I am on a fixed income so I use big box yarn. Frankly, the most expensive yarn I've bought is lion brand pound of love and caron one pound. I also use donated yarn for hats and scarves that are going to the PD. I am very grateful to you for your experience and knowledge regarding yarns and sales etc. I have bought 3 mystery cake bags from Hobbii for example this year and have now got loads of cotton projects on the go which I am really enjoying and couldn’t have afforded without your advice. If I make a quick hat or scarf for my grandchildren I often use a value yarn because it will be thrown in the washer or get lost at school. For my personal use I have been choosing high end yarn because I am willing to hand wash and air dry. I also like the warmth of quality wool. Some yarn I buy for the colorway and fiber, either high end or value. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience and enthusiasm. Totally agree with you, Chrystal, it all depends on the project, who it's for, the budget, and the effort needed to finish it. There are budget yarns I LOVE for shawls, others for slippers and bags. For some the feel is everything, for others it's the colours and how they work up. I don't like working with scratchy stiff yarns but sometimes they make the best bags. And you are so right that the yarn itself can inspire you to figure out what you can make of it.

Hi Crystal! You make very good points. I am on a fixed income, and I use a lot of value yarn - BUT - it has to be what I consider to be pretty, and it has to be soft. I am not an expert crocheter and even f I got the yarn on clearance or a really good sale, I enjoy the process and I do the absolute best job that I can. I enjoy watching you open up high end yarns, and I know you will make something beautiful with it, even if it's one skein of low yardage. I'm pretty sure that you could make something beautiful with 3 yards of string and a stick to crochet it with. We all need to embrace our differences with respect and support instead of looking to see who needs to be tossed into a "you aren't like me" trash heap.
